Vance, one of the first American fighting men to be injured following the declaration of war, receives the Purple Heart from Commander George H. Bowerman in ceremonies held recently at the U. S. Coast Guard Air Station, Floyd Bennett Field, New York. Vance, quartermaster second class, received his injuries when the Coast Guard Cutter Alexander Hamilton was torpedoed off Iceland. His home is at 2336 Evaline St., Hamtramck, Michigan.
