The divers are Lieutenant Commander Robert C. Phillips, executive officer of the Storis and Lieutenant (junior grade) Richard Nielsen, Jr., of Santa Cruz, Calif. The Storis with buoy tenders Spar and Bramble, reached ice-free water beyond Simpson Strait when the inspection took place.

Both locked in ice in Amundsen Gulf, the ships battled strong winds and ice pressure (August 1957).
