In with the new: Grant is thought to want to recruit Ten Cate

Chelsea are lining up Ajax coach Henk ten Cate to join manager Avram Grant's backroom staff at Stamford Bridge.

Grant, who was promoted from director of football to replace Jose Mourinho, has targeted the international break as a chance to rebuild the coaching set-up, with the Ajax coach thought to be one of the men he wants on board.

It is unclear whether Grant, the Israeli coach, would appoint Ten Cate in the director of football role, or whether he wants the former Barcelona assistant to work alongside his current No 2 Steve Clarke.

"Avram Grant, as first-team coach, has made it publicly clear several times that he intends to strengthen his backroom team in addition to his assistant coach Steve Clarke," a club statement read.

"One of the scenarios Avram is considering is a team containing a British assistant coach in Steve and a foreign assistant coach, a system the first-team are familiar with."

According to a Dutch magazine website, Chelsea technical director Frank Arnesen has held talks with 52-year-old Ten Cate about a possible move to west London. The Dutch club have yet to comment on the matter.

Ten Cate worked as assistant coach to Frank Rijkaard at Barcelona when they won the Champions League and Liga title in 2006. He then signed a two-year contract to become Ajax coach that summer. His deal runs out in July 2008.

If Ten Cate decides to leave Ajax, it remains unclear whether Clarke will continue working under the new regime.

Clarke was promoted to assistant coach with the arrival of Mourinho in 2004 and was instrumental in the club's turnaround but retained his position in the wake of Mourinho's departure.

Clarke, unlike Grant, has a Uefa coaching licence and may pursue the chance to become a manager in his own right.

His only other managerial experience was in 1999 when he took charge of Newcastle for one match following the departure of Ruud Gullit.
