Içmeler

Içmeler Panorama

With a backdrop of mountains and a wide, well-kept sand and shingle beach which runs the length of the bay, Içmeler is an attractive resort between Turunç and Marmaris. Içmeler features in the holiday brochures of many tour operators so you should expect it to be busier and more commercialised than Turunç.

Activity is mainly centered around the beach with a wide range of water-sports on offer. The village itself is very well cared-for and has a small canal which is lined with market stalls during the daytime and during the evenings the restaurants are lively and offer entertainment with your meal. A couple of discos provide some late night action although neighbouring Marmaris is only a short hop away for a larger choice.

There is a large and busy outdoor market held in Içmeler every Wednesday. This is located at the back of the village so is best reached by dolmuş which stops right outside rather than by taxi boat which means a longer walk.

Içmeler is approximately 8 Km from Marmaris and there is a promenade that allows this trip to be made on foot (or by bike!). It's a lovely walk at any time of the year.

Practical Stuff

From Turunç, Içmeler can be reached either by Dolmuş or Taxi Boat - unless you are travelling by private car of course.

  • The dolmuş takes about 30 minutes and runs along the back of the village close to the market area before continuing along the coast to Marmaris. In theory you are supposed to board and get off at signs marked "D" but the old regime still seems to prevail - get on and off anywhere! The Turunç-Marmaris services run from early until about midnight, on the hour, from either end of the route.
  • The water taxi boat runs from 09:00 until early evening (check timetables) on the hour from Turunç and Marmaris. It usually calls in at Icmeler en-route: the journey time is about 20 minutes. More expensive, slightly slower but more pleasant if you have the time. In Içmeler, the taxi boat stops at a stone jetty about half-way along the beach.

Içmeler has a larger range of shops than Turunç and a Turkish bank, but for "serious" business you will need to go on to Marmaris.
