With seven cosy cottages of its own, owner Raquel created Casa el Morro to her own particular vision in this great location; a rural area in the highest part of the town of Uga, near the expansive Timanfaya National Park, and a stone's throw from La Geria, a little town revered for its beauty as much as its wineries (bodegas).
This 'finca', as it is known, (Spanish for a country estate) was restored in 2000, generally retaining its colonial Canarian style, but also influenced by Indonesia in terms of its design. The locally-sourced materials that make up its decor include lava (Lanzarote is, after all, Europe's volcano island, with over 200 of them), ceramics and fine hardwood. The wooden beams, floor and old doors have been cared for with a range of oils to preserve the wood, and limestone embellishes the thick old stone walls, giving it the whitewash finish common to Andalucia and the Canaries.
As for furniture, Raquel has gone all out on that Indonesian focus, with the decision to use solely that bought in Indonesia - teak wood combines with silk and linen carpets and a range of ornaments to complete this significant Asian influence.
The garden areas have little stone walls, mature palm trees and bougainvilleas. Away from the detailed intricacy of the indoor areas, the part around the swimming pool is satisfyingly simple - some steps lead down to some plain paving, an orange wall delineating the swimming pool and leaving an expansive view of the ancient volcanoes. With the lustrous Canarian sun shining off the bright white patio and the space all around, guests feel respite and calm.
Each cottage has a fully-equipped kitchen (oven, hob, crockery and cutlery, toaster and kettle), television and CD player. There is even a breakfast service included in the rental. The various cottages have their own features and reasons to choose them, so take a look at the different descriptions in the table near the bottom of the page. There is also a large Mongolian yurt.
El Aljibe
The old stone water reservoir of the main house. The roof is made from volcanic stone, with large skylights. Upper level- double bed. Lower level- lounge and dining room with sofa bed, armchairs and sofa. Large windows open onto the terrace. Bathroom has terracotta floors and hand-painted tiles; large and bright. Well-equipped kitchen. Garden has teak tables and chairs, a sun lounger and pergola. Isolated exterior with pines, bougainvilleas, bananas and local plants in garden.
Yurt
The large 8m yurt sleeps a maximum of 6 people, with two double beds and two single beds. The special location provides views to the volcanoes and gardens. The structure is built entirely of natural resources and raised above the ground on a wooden platform allowing the space to breathe.
The central part of the roof is supported by beautifully carved Tibetan poles holding the crown which is a hand painted Mandala. Insidethere are luxurious soft silks, kilims and lush materials and it can be divided to accommodate either a family or a couple.
There is a separate kitchen/living area and a separate luxury bathroom with shower.
Meals
There is no restaurant other than to provide breakfasts. However if you don't want to cook in your own little kitchen there's a restaurant just 600 metres away in nearby Uga.

| This holiday accommodation is really beautiful. The photos don't do it justice. The rooms are bigger than they look and full of character. The pool area is a haven (or at least was most of the time), with day beds to relax in the shade and loungers to laze on in the sun, all with plenty of cushions to make you extra comfy. All the rooms were pretty much full when we were there and yet we still had at least 2 days when we had the pool to ourselves. We found Lanzarote a really interesting island to explore with notably beautiful beaches at Papagayo and Femara. The accommodation has a fully-equipped kitchen which we enjoyed cooking in and settling in with a bottle of wine from the local vineyards. We would wholeheartedly recommend this as a holiday destination. ENJOY! Anna, England |
| We stayed in the El Alijibe rooms, which were a delight! Beautifully decorated and furnished with everything you could want, although we were hardly inside. The bedroom was quirky and enchanting, and we slept soundly every night. The pool area was perfect, with big shaded beds around the outside and a great view over the village below. There was a sauna, which was easy to use. Raquel had organic produce which we happily purchased- aubergines, eggs, chard, radishes, etc, which we cooked up ourselves. Pedro the cat was a welcome friend and we did some yoga, which was great. Raquel is a very warm and helpful host. To sum up- total heavenly relaxation, and with your rental car it's easy to explore the island. Ricky, UK |
| I have to be honest - I never write reviews, but this holiday was different. I had spent a large part of the year working really hard in London and needed some time out - it was October and there were limited places left with sun within reasonable distance of the UK. What I wanted: not a busy tourist town but not too far from one if I wanted it, unique/tasteful accommodation in a chilled and calming location. What I got was exactly that, not to forget the extraordinary beauty of the surrounding area of beaches (small coves, so not windy), unique views and walks around the volcanoes (which were amazing). I think the real plus is the personable and incredibly pleasant staff that work and own Casa El Morro. The owner Raquel made me feel very welcome. The service and care provided by Raquel and her team was exceptional,l and that is what makes a good place to stay and spend your well-earned money! I truly recommend. |
