Tarifa is located at the southernmost end of the Iberian Peninsula, on the Strait of Gibraltar. As such, it is the point in Spain where Europe meets Africa, as you can look out across the water to Morocco directly on the other side. Its location makes Tarifa a wonderful spot to visit in Andalucia, being known as the windsurfing capital of Europe and home to some fantastic attractions. Deciding to hire a car in Malaga will help you get to Tarifa in just a couple of hours so read on to learn about some of the best things to see and do during your trip.

One of the main things that Tarifa, Spain is known for is its wind sports. The funnel created by the Strait of Gibraltar provides Tarifa with unique and exceptionally strong wind conditions, 300 days of the year. As a result, the beaches of Tarifa have become some of the most popular in the world for windsurfers and kitesurfers. Those visiting Tarifa will want to take advantage of this special location and try their hand at some of the amazing water sports on offer at the beaches of Playa de Los Lances, Valdevaqueros and Punta Paloma.

There are plenty of locations in Tarifa where beginners can learn to windsurf or kitesurf if they so choose, such as Surf Center Tarifa, providing group or solo lessons for children and adults. More experienced surfers can take advantage of the equipment rental on hand and get into the action straight away amid Tarifa’s perfect conditions.

The team at travel blog Travel Dudes have shared this advice for beginners who want to try their hand at windsurfing in Tarifa: “The best combination of services and wind, Tarifa is well known as a test centre or training place for most of the brands and pro riders, but it is good for beginners too. You will find windsurf centres from Los Lances beach to Valdevaqueros and Bolonia, depending on the wind direction you will have to choose the one that suits better your level, the conditions can vary from 3 km distances so ask the locals, they will friendly recommend the best spot for the day.”

Castle of Tarifa

Tarifa is more than just surf and wind, as this municipality in Cadiz is also home to an array of fascinating historic locations. One of the most famous is the Castle of Tarifa, also known as the Castle of Guzmán el Bueno. The fortification was originally built back in A.D 960 by the Caliph of Córdoba, Abd-ar-Rahman III. The castle later came into possession of Alonso Pérez de Guzmán, given to him by the King of Castille, Sancho IV, in 1292. Guzmán el Bueno, meaning Guzmán ‘the Good’, got his name by refusing to hand over the castle to the king’s rebellious brother, even in exchange for his son’s life.

Els, from the travel blog, My Feet Are Meant to Roam, has been to the Castle of Tarifa, and shares this insight into what visitors can expect once inside the walls: “Inside the castle you can see a small display on the life of Guzman himself. Explore the various archways, stairs, gates and towers and climb up to the ramparts for impressive views all the way to Morocco!”

The well-preserved castle is a delight for visitors, with its towers, as Els mentions above, providing great views of Morocco’s coast and mountains across the Strait of Gibraltar. A 13th-century tower is annexed to the castle, as is the Church of St Mary. All of which makes this impressive Moorish castle a brilliant stop on any exploration of Tarifa.

Puerta de Jerez and Roman ruins

There is history wherever you look in Tarifa and a glimpse of its medieval past can be seen today via the remains of its old city walls. Tarifa was once protected by its medieval walls, featuring three separate gates. Only one of these gates has survived to the present day, Puerta de Jerez, a beautiful relic from the 13th century. It’s a lovely spot to visit, take a photo, and transport yourself back across the centuries.

Another important historical site lies just outside of Tarifa. Baelo Claudia is the ruins of a Roman city, located only 14 miles away. Once part of Roman Hispania 2000 years ago, this ancient city lies on the shores of the Strait of Gibraltar and was once a fishing village and trade link. The city was abandoned by the 6th century and today visitors can enjoy seeing the remains of the forum, walls, senate buildings, four temples, courthouse, and the 2000 people capacity Roman theatre.

Krista the Explorer has been to Belo Claudia and shares the following advice: “If you have some extra time during your one day in Tarifa, I would highly recommend taking a short 25-minute drive to see the incredible Roman ruins in Bolonia – Baelo Claudia. It’s one of Andalucía’s most well-preserved Roman archaeological sites, dating back to the 2nd century BC, and sits along one of the most popular beaches along the Costa de la Luz. While you’re there, a quick walk up the famous sand dunes of Bolonia is a must as they’re some of the biggest in all of Europe and offer incredible views of the coastline.”
