DISCOVER SETÚBAL: WHERE TO EAT, SLEEP AND DRINK, AND WHAT TO VISIT AND DO

THE BLUEST CORNER IN PORTUGAL DEVELOPED A MODERNIZED AND “SAFE AMPHITHEATRE”, IN A COMMUNION BETWEEN TOWN AND NATURE, THAT HAS FURTHER REINFORCED ITS OWN ART OF GOOD HOSTING.

A strong wager is placed on the areas of Nature, gastronomy and wines. All that the land yields is highlighted in Setúbal, with the charm of a Portuguese town planted between the sea and the mountain.

Promenading along the panorama that can be observed from the top of the Arrábida Hills, or drifting with the tide down the River Sado, there is always an opportunity for incredible moments, such is the diversity of experiences that this region has to offer. Setúbal is an inimitable region, filled with charms and mysteries that reveal themselves on unforgettable days.

Located on the confluence of the River Sado and the Atlantic Ocean, the growing wild life has also taken advantage of this exuberant and protected setting. Projecting itself over the sea, Setúbal’s Peninsula is rich in awesome, panoramic views.

The large bay, often considered one of the most beautiful in the world, reveals the dolphins’ dance display, paradisiac beaches and the Arrábida’s Hills unique type of flora. Four, recently-added walking circuits with breath-taking panoramic views, allow for the discovery of one of the most beautiful Hills in Portugal.

At the town centre, the Convent of Jesus, the Bay House (Casa da Baía), St. Philippe Fortress, the Tourism House and Livramento’s Market are just a few of the sites that require a visit. From the cultural points, the walks by the seashore, the outside cafes, its panoramic viewpoints and the region’s renowned food products, this is a town with a soul to be appreciated.

Taverns and restaurants have to offer the best fish and the most enjoyable wines. Setúbal is famous for its Fish, and its focus in the promotion of this local product has granted the town many awards and distinctions in the gastronomic field.

Oysters, fish and shellfish are divine harvests, that can be tasted at one of the town’s more than 300 food establishments with an outdoors’ court; given all these flavours and scenic views, it is fundamental to complement them with a good selection of the region’s excellent wines.

On one side of the hills is the sea, on the other is the countryside quietness of Azeitão. The region was for many centuries one of the Portuguese aristocracy’s favourite retreats, that left a large legacy of buildings and monuments, a fact that by itself would justify a visit to Azeitão. But attractions are vivid in each street and after every corner: the flavours, the aromas, the handicraft and the flowered households, all call for a visit and a walking tour. The town and the hills; the Sado estuary and the paradisiacal beaches; the monuments and the gastronomy. It’s because of all this, that Setúbal is considered Europe’s best kept secret.
