Marin County has one less symbol of Sir Francis Drake, after city officials removed a statue of the explorer and slave trader in Larkspur.

Protestors have gathered at the statue in recent weeks calling for its removal, and were expected to tear it down themselves at a demonstration planned for Thursday. An online signature calling for it to be removed gathered 2,000 signatures.

City officials removed the state overnight in a surprise move.

Powelson, a longtime Corte Madera resident, cheered the removal as a step towards equity.

The city has preserved the statue and plans to hold a public meeting next week to determine its permanent fate.
