Hotels in Malta: Pergola Hotel & Spa Review

Table of Contents

We’ve been living in Malta for almost two years now and seeing as we have our own place, taking a day or two to enjoy the comforts of a hotel is a rare occurrence for us. But since we are leaving this beautiful island in just one month for our year-long trip around SE Asia, we’re trying to make the most out of these last few days!

The only issue with booking a hotel in Malta at the beginning of summer is that prices are insane! The best hotels start at around 200-450 a night, while mid-range hotels can have standard rooms for about 80-180. Hostels are charging around 25-60 per night in a shared dorm (crazy!).

Since the last I checked our bank accounts we’ve not miraculously become rich yet, we went for a standard room at a mid-range option in Mellieha: the Pergola Hotel & Spa, and here you will find our honest review for this stay!

Pergola Hotel & Spa

Location

The hotel is located in the picturesque village of Mellieħa, in the northernmost part of the main island of Malta. The town is situated in a more rural and quiet part of the island and overlooks Malta’s largest sandy beach, Mellieħa Bay.

It is also just a 10-minute drive away from Ċirkewwa, where you can easily hop on the ferries to Gozo and Comino.

Note: if you’re relying only on public transport to get around the country for tourism, you can expect to take about 1:15 hours to reach the hotel from the airport.

It takes roughly one hour from the hotel to the capital of Valletta, and almost 2 hours to get to the southernmost part of the island. Read more about this in this getting-around Malta guide.

The beach is a merely 15-minute walk from the hotel and the area has a good choice of bars and restaurants, supermarkets, and shops.

Built on the sides of the fertile valleys of Mellieha, the Pergola Hotel & Spa offers exquisite views of the 19th-century church, the bay, and the islands of Gozo and Comino.

The Suites

Options at the Pergola Hotel & Spa range from Economy and Standard Twin Rooms to Two-Bedroom Apartments with a sea view. We stayed in a Standard Twin Room so this is what we will focus on in this review.

Unfortunately, we were quite disappointed with the room. It does have all the facilities such as a TV, air-conditioner, hairdryer, and minibar, but for 115 euros a night, we felt like it is definitely overpriced. The room is tiny and simple, but clean, and the beds are comfortable.

The minibar is empty so you can keep your own bottles of water nice and cold, and there’s an electric kettle with free tea and coffee.

The bathroom is modern and clean, and the shower is good. There’s also a small balcony with town views. Cleaning happens every day.

The hotel is a maze. To get to this room we had to get a lift down, cross a corridor, and get another lift up. To go from the room to the rooftop we had to get 3 different lifts, so getting around the hotel is quite confusing – but we did receive a map and clear instructions from the reception.

After checking into the room, we realized that we were in a different building so we asked the reception to be moved to the main building and, if possible, to a slightly bigger room, as we were disappointed with ours and the pictures from the booking platform look completely different.

The staff is very friendly so the receptionist made her best and moved us to a new room, which looks very much like the one from the photos above, only a bit more spacious. So if you’d like to be more comfortable make sure to request a room in the main building when booking your stay with them.

The Space

Pergola Hotel & Spa features an indoor pool and two outdoor pools, one of them being the infinity pool located on the rooftop of the 4th floor right next to their famous Cave Bar.

This rooftop offers amazing views of Mellieħa church, Mellieħa bay, and the sister islands of Malta: Gozo and Comino.

The infinity pool and cave bar are the main reasons why we chose to stay at Pergola Hotel & Spa and they didn’t disappoint! We spent a really good time chilling by the pool and soaking in the sunset views.

The indoor pool is also quite nice, and right next to it, you’ll find a well-equipped gym and the Spa entrance. Massage prices range between about 35 to 65 euros for 30 minutes and 1 hour respectively. The other outdoor pool is more reserved.

As you might know by now, we love good and reliable WiFi, and the hotel has it available for free throughout.

The Food

Breakfast is served daily from 7:30 to 10:30 as a buffet and it has plenty of options to choose from. At the same restaurant inside the hotel, they serve dinner in a buffet setting for about 25 euros per person. The hotel also recommends the Da Ciccio Cucina and the Tosca Restaurant in the village.

We decided to go explore the village and ended up at the L’Amigo Restaurant, a traditional Maltese restaurant with delicious food! Prices are reasonable, ranging from 7-10 euros for a pizza to 25 euros for a full-course meal. Definitely recommend!

Note: that we base our ratings on same-level accommodations in similar locations, therefore we’ll never compare a Hostel in Asia with a Hostel in Europe or a guesthouse with a 5-star resort.

Conclusion

Overall, the room is too basic for the price but the facilities are totally worth it! Considering that prices in Malta skyrocket during summer, the Pergola Hotel & Spa still offers a good experience for not such an exorbitant price.
