Karfas is a village-seaside settlement and bay of eastern Chios, at a distance of 7 kilometers south of the city of Chios. It was formerly a settlement of the community of Thymiana, and today it is a settlement of the Municipal Community of Thymiana of the Municipal Unity of Agios Minas of the Municipality of Chios. The name implies etymologically the place where he has no water

Karfas is located on a gentle hilly coast, forming the bay of Karfas, well known for its extensive shallow sandy beach (see below). The median altitude of the settlement is 10 meters above sea level. Nearest settlements are Agia Ermioni, Mega Limonas (to the southwest), and Thymiana (2km) to the west. The settlements of Karfas and Aghia Ermioni are the two settlements closest to the Turkish territory of the island.
The evolution of the population of Karfas in official inventories is shown in the table. The large increase in the permanent population follows as usual the establishment of the settlement as a resort.

The bay and the beach

Karfas bay, in the center of the eastern coast of Chios, is located north of Cape Agia Eleni, which is also the easternmost point of the whole island, and south of Punta Cape. The second is the closest point on the island of Chios to the Asia Minor coast (6.5 kilometers and 4.3 kilometers from the rocky island of Passargos, which belongs to Turkey).

The bay is well-known for its extensive shallow sand, perhaps one of the most shallow (shallow) of all the Greek islands, which is impressive as the land is not flat. The bottom is made up of sand, without any ponds or stones, even at a long distance from the coast: a true underwater desert. This attracted summer tourism and so, in just two old (from the 1960's) seaside restaurants, "Karatza" in the center of the coast and "Yamou" in the southern part, after 1980 there were added many rooms to rent, two large hotels (at the northern edge and the central section) and many small tourist shops. It is essentially the largest tourist resort on the island. The beach is now organized, with lifeguards, umbrellas and sun loungers. Several bars and cafes were added later. Certainly there has been a burden on the environment and the absolute purity of the sea. The old chapel of St. George westwards and the women's monastery of Agios Konstantinos northwest flank the ridge above the bay.
