Rethymno, or Rethimno, is a city on the north coast of the Greek island of Crete. In the old town, the Venetian Harbor is filled with fishing boats and lined with tavernas. Rethymno Lighthouse was built in the 1830s. West, the hilltop Fortezza is a star-shaped, 16th-century citadel. The Historical and Folklore Museum preserves local crafts like textiles and ceramics. Long, sandy Rethymno Beach stretches to the east.
The beach is full of golden sand and crystal clear shallow water. It is said to be very well organized and close to all amenities of the city. Closest to town is the westernmost end of the 13km long beachfront of Rethymno Bay, which stretches east all the way to Skaleta.
This picturesque town is full of narrow alleys, elegant mansions, arches, and boasts a beautiful Venetian port. The port of Rethymno is hands down the most popular spot of the town! It is lined with cafeterias and restaurants, while the seafront promenade is perfect for evening strolls.
If nightlife is what you are seeking as well, Rethymno has some of the best places to enjoy the evening on Crete.
The old town of Rethymnon is made of tiny streets that are full of restaurants and stores yet it seems less crowded that the old town in Chania, and therefore seems less hectic. If you go by car, available parking nearby (both free and paid) makes it quite accessible.
For an authentic Greek experience, Rethymno is waiting just around the corner!
