Sir Francis Drake statue AR

Drake statue AR

In Plymouth Sir Francis Drake is generally treated as a hero because of he was second in command against the Spanish Armada.

However, he was involved in the third voyage for the slave trade of West African people for high value goods and he is generally considered to be a villain by the Spanish due to his raiding of Spanish and Portuguese ships, according to a history information page. The pedestal on which he stands features an old ‘Wanted’ poster featuring him.

In my augmented reality (AR) composite, I make fun of the statue showing the heroic interpretation of Drake, along with a use of artistic expression, by showing him as a (literal) clown with a clown’s face and hat and a rubber chicken in his hand. Clowns can be positive or negative, the traditional happy circus clown or the dark opponent in the Batman series, The Joker.
