Basic information about Playa de las Americas

In brief: the past and present of Playa de las Americas.

Playa de las Americas is the main resort town of the island of Tenerife, which is part of the Canary Archipelago. The tourist area is formed in the southern part of the municipality of Arona and borders Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje. It is represented by modern sandy beaches of the Atlantic coast, restaurants, bars, complexes of water entertainment. In 75 km from Playa de las Americas is the capital of the island - Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in 42 km - Las Cañadas with the volcano Teide.

The population of Playa de las Americas is just over 10,000 inhabitants. The national currency is the euro (EUR).

In the 1970s, the blooming north of Tenerife stopped coping with the influx of tourists. Unstable weather conditions with amplitude seasonal temperature fluctuations, high average annual precipitation and ocean disturbances played against it.

Southern, climatically favorable Playa de las Americas was founded on the site of fishing settlements as a major recreational center by a group of Spanish and foreign investors and rebuilt from scratch in just a few decades. In 1978, Tenerife International Airport - Tenerife South Airport - was inaugurated 20 km away.

Today, the resort Playa de las Americas occupies a coastal line 6 km long and offers all kinds of leisure activities on the water, in bars, restaurants, entertainment centers. In translation, its name means "beach of the Americas". In this way, the Spaniards emphasized the significance of Amerigo Vespucci's voyage and discovery.
