Wild Carrot

Daucus carota

All our seed is the latest harvest and super fresh.

Umbellifers bloom in varying shades of chocolate, burgundy red, dusky pink and almost white. Wild Carrot is sometimes called Chocolate Queen Anne’s Lace or Chocolate Lace Flower.

Umbellifer is from the Latin for umbella ‘parasol’, it relates to the shape of the flowers.

Perfect to stop arrangements from being ‘too polite’ giving endless floral combinations, as well as a brilliant garden backdrop!

Autumn sown plants can tower at almost 7 feet tall, Wild Carrot looks gorgeous planted en-masse.

Keep a couple of plants in pots until Spring to fill any gaps in your borders.

How to grow:
Preferring fluctuating temperatures for germination, I simply sow my seeds in October, one seed per cell. Sowing in cells will limit any disturbance of the carrot shaped tap root. Plants are very hardy and require a period of ‘cool weather’ growing to gain size.

Leaving the seeds uncovered, I find that light aids germination. I find my seeds typically take 3 weeks to germinate.

Provide support, Spring Showers can make flower heads heavy.

Cutting /Vase Life:
Cut when almost all of the flowers on a stem are open. If harvested too early the young sappy stems have a tendency to wilt. You can feel them thicken and become more rigid as stems mature. Place flowers straight into ready buckets of water. We rest our stems for a few hours in water, this is called conditioning.
