He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and isburied in the Farmer Cemetery at Bolt, Raleigh County. He married Fanny CatherineBrooks, daughter of Isaac Quinn Brooks and Rebecca Cook, on June 6, 1890, inWyoming County. Their children were Clark Cecil, Bud C, William Hinton, Joe, JamesRaymond, Thomas Hugh Jr., Dorothy, Lillia, Sidney, and Orah.-Clark Cecil Daniel was born July 2, 1907, at McGraw's, Wyoming County, anddied February 27, 1983, in Raleigh County. He was married to Ruby Alice Bailey,daughter of Larkin Bailey and Nancy May Snuffer. They had six children.-Bud C. Daniel was born May 22, 1892. He married Bessie M. Stewart, daughterof William Stewart and Mary Frances Cook, on November 17, 1915, in WyomingCounty. They had seven children.-Dorothy Daniel was born March 8, 1891, in Wyoming County and died March 7,1952. She married Jode Books, son of Davis Jefferson Brooks and Judy Bailey, onDecember 5, 1908, in Raleigh County. They had seven children.3

He married Ida MaeDuncan, daughter of John L. Duncan and Jane Walker. Ida Mae was born December 15,1894, and died March 31, 1927, in Wyoming County. They are both buried at the PineGrove Cemetery in Ravencliff, Wyoming County. Their children were Buster, Earl,Lillie, Grat, Marie, and Bea.Joel Daniel, son of Nehemiah, married second Nancy Jane Allen, daughter of BrittonAllen and Frankie "Frances" Roach on February 12, 1877, in Wyoming County. Theyhad one child.Joel's third marriage was to Frances "Frankie" Milam, daughter of Russell Milam andNarcissus Sizemore, on May 8, 1879, in Raleigh County. They were married by James F.Webb. Frances was born March 1854 in Wyoming County and died on April 2, 1947, inRaleigh County. Their children were Governor, Frank, Etta, George, Josie, Susie, Lizzie,Pearl, and Catherine.-Govenor Daniel was born in 1880 and died May 10, 1881, in Raleigh County.-Frank Pierce Daniel was born on October 27, 1882, and died January 6, 1953, atBolt in Raleigh County. He was a justice of the peace, a retired coal miner, a member ofthe Breckinridge Baptist Church at Bolt, and Local No. 8004, United Mine Workers ofAmerica at Glen Rogers. He was married to Mellie Worley and they had two children.-Josie Daniel was born May 1887 and married Wayne Smith.-Susie Daniel was born in January 1890 and married Okey Harvey4

Pettry.-Pearl Daniel was born in January 1899 and married Asa Hurst.-Catherine Daniel married Willie Jarrell.-James Henry Daniel was born in August 1851 and died in 1921 in FayetteCounty. He married Susan McKay Davis, daughter of Jefferson Davis and MargaretMcKay, on January 12, 1872, in Boone County. They had eleven children.3. Nehemiah Daniel IIINehemiah, son of Nehemiah was born about 1848 and died on November 10, 1904. Hewas employed at Fire Creek by coal operator Harry Caperton and was a saloon keeperaccording to the 1900 Fayette County Census. He was elected sheriff of Fayette Countyin 1902. He was shot and killed by Ed Jackson at Montgomery while trying to arrestJackson in the middle of a riot situation. There was a battle between the miners and theBaldwin-Felt Detectives. Jackson was sentenced to 18 years in the penitentiary, but onlyserved six years and was then pardoned. Nehemiah was married first to Nellie Davis andmarried second to Elizabeth Evans on August 18, 1870, in Boone County. Nehemiah andElizabeth had a son named Jesse Daniel.-Jesse Daniel was born in November of 1874 and died on October 1, 1908, inFayette County. He was an attorney. He had his wife Jennie had a daughter namedCathleen.3. William Green DanielWilliam Green Daniel, son of Nehemiah, was born on March 4, 1845, and died on May 2,1912, in Raleigh County. He was married twice.William and Mahala Morris, daughter of Nancy Morris, had twins Robert Lee and LulaCatherine.-Robert Lee Daniel was born on April 1, 1868, in Rock Creek, Raleigh County,and died on May 11, 1951, in Glen View, Raleigh County. He married Margaret AMassey, daughter of William Massey and Malinda Combs, on November 7, 1887, inRaleigh County. They had seven children: William, Lewis, Alton D, Dicy, Icy Pearl,Nancy Jane, and Winifred Daniel.-Lula Catherine Daniel was born on April 1, 1868, in Rock Creek, RaleighCounty, and died January 9, 1930, in Beckley, Raleigh County. She married MilesGordon Quesenberry on October 15, 1888, in Raleigh County. Their children wereEnoch, William, Mariah, John Floyd, George Emmett, Jesse, Hazel, Anna Faye,andLeander Miles Quesenberry.5

She married Samuel Lewis Stover, son of Andrew Stover andMary West,on July 28, 1897, in Raleigh County. They had four children.-Archie Daniel, born August 1872, married Ollie Belle Manning on March 6,1908, in Raleigh County. Their children were Kermit, Ora, Nellie, Gracie, Kathleen, andEvelyn Daniel.-Sarah Harriett Daniel was born about 1872 and married Burdine Stover, son ofBurell Stover and Leanza Williams, on October 14, 1900, in Raleigh County. They hadsix children.-Edna E Daniel was born in April 1884. She married James Buchannon Nolan onApril 1, 1907, in Raleigh County.-Mary Ann Daniel was born on April 11, 1880, and died on November 25, 1953.She married Lewis Franklin Stover, son of Burrell Stover and Leanza Williams. They hadseven children.-Hugh A. Daniel was born on August 8, 1870, and died January 21, 1929. Hemarried Marsha Anopra Williams, daughter of Ballard Williams and Spicey Bradley, onJuly 8, 1891, in Beckley, Raleigh County. They were married by L P Groves. Hugh alsomarried Orlena S. Snuffer, daughter of Addison Snuffer and Mary Frances Shumate.Hugh and Orlena had nine children.3. William married Lydia Rosabelle Acord, daughter of William Calvin Acord and SarahAnn McMillian, on May 24, 1900, in Raleigh County. Lydia was born August 26, 1856,in Raleigh County and died December 15, 1917, in Raleigh County.3. Robert K. Daniel and Nancy MorrisRobert, son of Nehemiah, was born February 1835 in Patrick County and died in 1914.He married Nancy Morris, daughter of James Morris and Martha Accord, on April 19,1858, in Raleigh County. Their children were James, Robert, Andrew, Martha Jane,Elizabeth, Mary, William, Louisa, and Joel.-James Edmunson Daniel was born on April 11, 1859, in Raleigh County andmarried Parthena Alice Fleshman, daughter of John Fleshman and Sarah E. Warren, on December 8, 1898, in Raleigh County.-Martha Jane Daniel was born about August 1876 and married George FloydTrump, son of John Trump and Margaret Snuffer, on October 21, 1897, in RaleighCounty.-Eliza Daniel was born August 1, 1880. She married Calvin Vandevort Atha, sonof Lorenzo Dow Atha and Mary Jane Wiseman, on April 9, 1905, in Raleigh County.Their children were Martha, Calvin, Maude, Theodore and Wilmer Atha. Elizabethmarried second John Webb.-Mary Daniel was born July 27, 1865, in Saxon, Raleigh County. Mary died onFebruary 19, 1820, in Tolleytown, Raleigh County. Daniel, born May 20, 1854, in Raleigh County, married J. B. Honaker.-Dr. Sidney J. Daniel was born in 1863 and died October 23, 1917, at Lester,Raleigh County. He married Ruthy Alice Cook, daughter of James Perry Cook and JuliaAnn Sarrett, on May 2, 1892, in Raleigh County. Their children were Gracie, Protia,Daniel, Arthur, Estella, Orville, and Pearl.-Govenor David Daniel was born in 1860 and died August 11, 1922, in Wallowa,Oregon. He married Nancy Clementine McGinnis, daughter of Gordon McGinnis andAmelia Workman. Their family moved to Oregon.7

Va.Wednesday Afternoon, January 20, 1960Noted County Doctor, George P. Daniel, DiesA legend of Raleigh County ended today when Dr. George P. Daniel diedin Beckley Hospital.The well known country doctor once estimated he had ridden his horse"three times around the world" as he answered the call of the sick from hisGlen Daniel home.Death came at 2:30 a.m. He had undergone surgery for removal of atumor from his esophagus 14 days ago and those in attendance wereamazed at his vitality after having been on the operating table for manyhours. Death was attributed to complications.Born Oct. 24, 1868, a son of the Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Daniel, Coal River, hebegan administering to the sick and injured the day after he received hismedical degree from the University of Louisville Medical School.Dr. Daniel achieved his degree the hard way - working to acquire themoney to put himself through school. He did this by teaching school andnot only financed his own medical school education but also made itpossible for a brother, Sydney, to become a physician. In addition, hesired two generations of doctor sons.Dr. Daniel probably delivered more babies than anyone else in RaleighCounty. It is only natural that he should have acquired many namesakes -but he had no idea how many.When he began his practice, he traveled the hills and valley by horseback.He had to perform hundreds of operations--most of them on kitchen tables,long before the county boasted a hospital.Devotion to medicine did not thwart his keen business sense. His fatherhad been a successful merchant and when still a young doctor, he followedin his father's footsteps by operating a store and sometimes working in it8

himself. He also secured several business properties both in Raleigh andWyoming counties.An active Republican all his life, Dr. Daniel had the distinction of beingthe first presidential elector from Raleigh County. He cast a vote forTheodore Roosevelt in 1904.Earlier he had taken a census of Marsh Fork District in 1890, and in thesame year was a delegate to the then Third Congressional DistrictRepublican convention in Hinton.When Dr. Daniel began his career, the population of Raleigh County wasjust over 7,000. The count is now nearly 100,000.The first utility company was formed at Glen Daniel--the Trap HillTelephone Co., organized in the early 1900s by Dr. Daniel and a few othermen. It later was sold to the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co.Dr. Daniel served as the first noble grand of the Odd Fellows Lodge atGlen Daniel. He later became secretary of the lodge and served in thecapacity for over 50 years.He married Nettie May Calaway, daughter of George Calaway and SarahHinchman on September 26, 1894, in Raleigh County. Both of their sons,Doff C, and Ross Preston were also doctors.-Lewis Daniel was born October 23, 1852, in Raleigh County. He married SarahF. Ballard, daughter of James Blackburn Ballard and Evaline Workman, on February 26,1883, in Raleigh County. Their children were Sidney Preston, Elsie, Sylvia, Dennie, JThomas, Blaine, William, Fred, Emma, Eva, Edward, Otis, Delos, and Daniel.-Edward Henderson Daniel was born August 7, 1856, in Raleigh County and diedNovember 21, 1931, in Raleigh County. He was a retired miner and retained an interest incommunity affairs. He married Julia Catherine Snuffer on August 14, 1878, in RaleighCounty. Julia's parents were Owen Snuffer and Cleopatra Terry. Their children wereGovernor Lacy, Emmet J., Lakie, Frank L., Oscar C., Ashton H., Garner P., Jesse E.,Carrie, Cody, Russell Giles, and Crockett H.
