Their children were Clark Cecil, Bud C, William Hinton, Joe, JamesRaymond, Thomas Hugh Jr., Dorothy, Lillia, Sidney, <strong>and</strong> Orah.-Clark Cecil <strong>Daniel</strong> was born July 2, 1907, at McGraw's, Wyoming County, <strong>and</strong>died February 27, 1983, in Raleigh County. He was married to Ruby Alice Bailey,daughter of Larkin Bailey <strong>and</strong> Nancy May Snuffer. They had six children.-Bud C. <strong>Daniel</strong> was born May 22, 1892. He married Bessie M. Stewart, daughterof William Stewart <strong>and</strong> Mary Frances Cook, on November 17, 1915, in WyomingCounty. They had seven children.-Dorothy <strong>Daniel</strong> was born March 8, 1891, in Wyoming County <strong>and</strong> died March 7,1952. She married Jode Books, son of Davis Jefferson Brooks <strong>and</strong> Judy Bailey, onDecember 5, 1908, in Raleigh County. They had seven children.3

William H. <strong>Daniel</strong> <strong>and</strong> Ida Mae DuncanWilliam Hinton <strong>Daniel</strong>, son of Thomas, was born November 2, 1894, at McGraws,Wyoming County <strong>and</strong> died June 13, 1959, in Wyoming County. He married Ida MaeDuncan, daughter of John L. Duncan <strong>and</strong> Jane Walker. Ida Mae was born December 15,1894, <strong>and</strong> died March 31, 1927, in Wyoming County. They are both buried at the PineGrove Cemetery in Ravencliff, Wyoming County. Their children were Buster, Earl,Lillie, Grat, Marie, <strong>and</strong> Bea.Joel <strong>Daniel</strong>, son of <strong>Nehemiah</strong>, married second Nancy Jane Allen, daughter of BrittonAllen <strong>and</strong> Frankie "Frances" Roach on February 12, 1877, in Wyoming County. Theyhad one child.Joel's third marriage was to Frances "Frankie" Milam, daughter of Russell Milam <strong>and</strong>Narcissus Sizemore, on May 8, 1879, in Raleigh County. They were married by James F.Webb. Frances was born March 1854 in Wyoming County <strong>and</strong> died on April 2, 1947, inRaleigh County. Their children were Governor, Frank, Etta, George, Josie, Susie, Lizzie,Pearl, <strong>and</strong> Catherine.-Govenor <strong>Daniel</strong> was born in 1880 <strong>and</strong> died May 10, 1881, in Raleigh County.-Frank Pierce <strong>Daniel</strong> was born on October 27, 1882, <strong>and</strong> died January 6, 1953, atBolt in Raleigh County. He was a justice of the peace, a retired coal miner, a member ofthe Breckinridge Baptist Church at Bolt, <strong>and</strong> Local No. 8004, United Mine Workers ofAmerica at Glen Rogers. He was married to Mellie Worley <strong>and</strong> they had two children.-Josie <strong>Daniel</strong> was born May 1887 <strong>and</strong> married Wayne Smith.-Susie <strong>Daniel</strong> was born in January 1890 <strong>and</strong> married Okey Harvey4

Pettry.-Pearl <strong>Daniel</strong> was born in January 1899 <strong>and</strong> married Asa Hurst.-Catherine <strong>Daniel</strong> married Willie Jarrell.-James Henry <strong>Daniel</strong> was born in August 1851 <strong>and</strong> died in 1921 in FayetteCounty. He married Susan McKay Davis, daughter of Jefferson Davis <strong>and</strong> MargaretMcKay, on January 12, 1872, in Boone County. They had eleven children.3. <strong>Nehemiah</strong> <strong>Daniel</strong> III<strong>Nehemiah</strong>, son of <strong>Nehemiah</strong> was born about 1848 <strong>and</strong> died on November 10, 1904. Hewas employed at Fire Creek by coal operator Harry Caperton <strong>and</strong> was a saloon keeperaccording to the 1900 Fayette County Census. He was elected sheriff of Fayette Countyin 1902. He was shot <strong>and</strong> killed by Ed Jackson at Montgomery while trying to arrestJackson in the middle of a riot situation. There was a battle between the miners <strong>and</strong> theBaldwin-Felt Detectives. Jackson was sentenced to 18 years in the penitentiary, but onlyserved six years <strong>and</strong> was then pardoned. <strong>Nehemiah</strong> was married first to Nellie Davis <strong>and</strong>married second to Elizabeth Evans on August 18, 1870, in Boone County. <strong>Nehemiah</strong> <strong>and</strong>Elizabeth had a son named Jesse <strong>Daniel</strong>.-Jesse <strong>Daniel</strong> was born in November of 1874 <strong>and</strong> died on October 1, 1908, inFayette County. He was an attorney. He had his wife Jennie had a daughter namedCathleen.3. William Green <strong>Daniel</strong>William Green <strong>Daniel</strong>, son of <strong>Nehemiah</strong>, was born on March 4, 1845, <strong>and</strong> died on May 2,1912, in Raleigh County. He was married twice.William <strong>and</strong> Mahala Morris, daughter of Nancy Morris, had twins Robert Lee <strong>and</strong> LulaCatherine.-Robert Lee <strong>Daniel</strong> was born on April 1, 1868, in Rock Creek, Raleigh County,<strong>and</strong> died on May 11, 1951, in Glen View, Raleigh County. He married Margaret AMassey, daughter of William Massey <strong>and</strong> Malinda Combs, on November 7, 1887, inRaleigh County. They had seven children: William, Lewis, Alton D, Dicy, Icy Pearl,Nancy Jane, <strong>and</strong> Winifred <strong>Daniel</strong>.-Lula Catherine <strong>Daniel</strong> was born on April 1, 1868, in Rock Creek, RaleighCounty, <strong>and</strong> died January 9, 1930, in Beckley, Raleigh County. She married MilesGordon Quesenberry on October 15, 1888, in Raleigh County. Their children wereEnoch, William, Mariah, John Floyd, George Emmett, Jesse, Hazel, <strong>Anna</strong> Faye,<strong>and</strong>Le<strong>and</strong>er Miles Quesenberry.5

Their children were Alice Elvira, Arcie, Sarah,Roxie, Edna, Mary Ann <strong>and</strong> Hugh <strong>Daniel</strong>.-Alice Elvira <strong>Daniel</strong> was born in October 1876 in Lincoln County <strong>and</strong> died about1936 in Raleigh County. She married Samuel Lewis Stover, son of Andrew Stover <strong>and</strong>Mary <strong>West</strong>,on July 28, 1897, in Raleigh County. They had four children.-Archie <strong>Daniel</strong>, born August 1872, married Ollie Belle Manning on March 6,1908, in Raleigh County. Their children were Kermit, Ora, Nellie, Gracie, Kathleen, <strong>and</strong>Evelyn <strong>Daniel</strong>.-Sarah Harriett <strong>Daniel</strong> was born about 1872 <strong>and</strong> married Burdine Stover, son ofBurell Stover <strong>and</strong> Leanza Williams, on October 14, 1900, in Raleigh County. They hadsix children.-Edna E <strong>Daniel</strong> was born in April 1884. She married James Buchannon Nolan onApril 1, 1907, in Raleigh County.-Mary Ann <strong>Daniel</strong> was born on April 11, 1880, <strong>and</strong> died on November 25, 1953.She married Lewis Franklin Stover, son of Burrell Stover <strong>and</strong> Leanza Williams. They hadseven children.-Hugh A. <strong>Daniel</strong> was born on August 8, 1870, <strong>and</strong> died January 21, 1929. Hemarried Marsha Anopra Williams, daughter of Ballard Williams <strong>and</strong> Spicey Bradley, onJuly 8, 1891, in Beckley, Raleigh County. They were married by L P Groves. Hugh alsomarried Orlena S. Snuffer, daughter of Addison Snuffer <strong>and</strong> Mary Frances Shumate.Hugh <strong>and</strong> Orlena had nine children.3. William married Lydia Rosabelle Acord, daughter of William Calvin Acord <strong>and</strong> SarahAnn McMillian, on May 24, 1900, in Raleigh County. Lydia was born August 26, 1856,in Raleigh County <strong>and</strong> died December 15, 1917, in Raleigh County.3. Robert K. <strong>Daniel</strong> <strong>and</strong> Nancy MorrisRobert, son of <strong>Nehemiah</strong>, was born February 1835 in Patrick County <strong>and</strong> died in 1914.He married Nancy Morris, daughter of James Morris <strong>and</strong> Martha Accord, on April 19,1858, in Raleigh County. Their children were James, Robert, Andrew, Martha Jane,Elizabeth, Mary, William, Louisa, <strong>and</strong> Joel.-James Edmunson <strong>Daniel</strong> was born on April 11, 1859, in Raleigh County <strong>and</strong>married Parthena Alice Fleshman, daughter of John Fleshman <strong>and</strong> Sarah E. Warren onFebruary 26, 1884, in Raleigh County.-Robert Cumberl<strong>and</strong> <strong>Daniel</strong> was born May 1860 <strong>and</strong> died June 11, 1932, atMaynor, Raleigh County. Robert married first Martha Elizabeth Massey, daughter of6


Henry Massey <strong>and</strong> Nancy Ann Combs, on February 19, 1881, in Raleigh County. Theirchildren were Sirena, Robert, Jesse, William, Henry Monroe, Nancy, Fidella, Harvey,Sarah Edna, Dollie, Eliza, <strong>and</strong> Frank. Robert married second Martha Ann <strong>Daniel</strong>,daughter of Jeremiah <strong>Daniel</strong> <strong>and</strong> Julia Ann McMillian, about 1915 in Raleigh County.Their children were George, Herbert Clayton, Paul ,<strong>and</strong> Josie Lee <strong>Daniel</strong>.-Andrew <strong>Daniel</strong>, born about 1877 married Burke Louise Fleshman, daughter ofJohn W. Fleshman <strong>and</strong> Sarah E. Warren, on December 8, 1898, in Raleigh County.-Martha Jane <strong>Daniel</strong> was born about August 1876 <strong>and</strong> married George FloydTrump, son of John Trump <strong>and</strong> Margaret Snuffer, on October 21, 1897, in RaleighCounty.-Eliza <strong>Daniel</strong> was born August 1, 1880. She married Calvin V<strong>and</strong>evort Atha, sonof Lorenzo Dow Atha <strong>and</strong> Mary Jane Wiseman, on April 9, 1905, in Raleigh County.Their children were Martha, Calvin, Maude, Theodore <strong>and</strong> Wilmer Atha. Elizabethmarried second John Webb.-Mary <strong>Daniel</strong> was born July 27, 1865, in Saxon, Raleigh County. Mary died onFebruary 19, 1820, in Tolleytown, Raleigh County. Mary married Lewis HerefordHutchison, son of James Alex<strong>and</strong>er Hutchison <strong>and</strong> Nancy O'Neal, on September 21,1892, in Raleigh County.3. He married Sarah L. Moore, daughter of James Moore <strong>and</strong> NancyShumate. Sarah was born about 1827 <strong>and</strong> died July 2, 1887, in Raleigh County. B. Honaker.-Dr. Sidney J. <strong>Daniel</strong> was born in 1863 <strong>and</strong> died October 23, 1917, at Lester,Raleigh County. He married Ruthy Alice Cook, daughter of James Perry Cook <strong>and</strong> JuliaAnn Sarrett, on May 2, 1892, in Raleigh County. Their children were Gracie, Protia,<strong>Daniel</strong>, Arthur, Estella, Orville, <strong>and</strong> Pearl.-Govenor David <strong>Daniel</strong> was born in 1860 <strong>and</strong> died August 11, 1922, in Wallowa,Oregon. He married Nancy Clementine McGinnis, daughter of Gordon McGinnis <strong>and</strong>Amelia Workman. Their family moved to Oregon.7


-Albert Edward <strong>Daniel</strong> was born on September 29, 1858, <strong>and</strong> married JeanetteThompson, daughter of John Thompson <strong>and</strong> Rebecca Hedrick, on October 13, 1879, inRaleigh County. Their children were William Hubert, John, Posey, Effie, Everett,Eugene, <strong>and</strong> Opal.1960.-Dr. George Preston <strong>Daniel</strong> was born on October 24, 1868; <strong>and</strong> he died in JanuaryThe Raleigh Register, Beckley, W. Va.Wednesday Afternoon, January 20, 1960Noted County Doctor, George P. <strong>Daniel</strong>, DiesA legend of Raleigh County ended today when Dr. George P. <strong>Daniel</strong> diedin Beckley Hospital.The well known country doctor once estimated he had ridden his horse"three times around the world" as he answered the call of the sick from hisGlen <strong>Daniel</strong> home.Death came at 2:30 a.m. He had undergone surgery for removal of atumor from his esophagus 14 days ago <strong>and</strong> those in attendance wereamazed at his vitality after having been on the operating table for manyhours. Death was attributed to complications.Born Oct. 24, 1868, a son of the Mr. <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Jesse <strong>Daniel</strong>, Coal River, hebegan administering to the sick <strong>and</strong> injured the day after he received hismedical degree from the University of Louisville Medical School.Dr. <strong>Daniel</strong> achieved his degree the hard way - working to acquire themoney to put himself through school. He did this by teaching school <strong>and</strong>not only financed his own medical school education but also made itpossible for a brother, Sydney, to become a physician. In addition, hesired two generations of doctor sons.Dr. <strong>Daniel</strong> probably delivered more babies than anyone else in RaleighCounty. It is only natural that he should have acquired many namesakes -but he had no idea how many.When he began his practice, he traveled the hills <strong>and</strong> valley by horseback.He had to perform hundreds of operations--most of them on kitchen tables,long before the county boasted a hospital.Devotion to medicine did not thwart his keen business sense. His fatherhad been a successful merchant <strong>and</strong> when still a young doctor, he followedin his father's footsteps by operating a store <strong>and</strong> sometimes working in it8


himself. He also secured several business properties both in Raleigh <strong>and</strong>Wyoming counties.An active Republican all his life, Dr. <strong>Daniel</strong> had the distinction of beingthe first presidential elector from Raleigh County. He cast a vote forTheodore Roosevelt in 1904.Earlier he had taken a census of Marsh Fork District in 1890, <strong>and</strong> in thesame year was a delegate to the then Third Congressional DistrictRepublican convention in Hinton.When Dr. <strong>Daniel</strong> began his career, the population of Raleigh County wasjust over 7,000. The count is now nearly 100,000.The first utility company was formed at Glen <strong>Daniel</strong>--the Trap HillTelephone Co., organized in the early 1900s by Dr. <strong>Daniel</strong> <strong>and</strong> a few othermen. It later was sold to the Chesapeake <strong>and</strong> Potomac Telephone Co.Dr. <strong>Daniel</strong> served as the first noble gr<strong>and</strong> of the Odd Fellows Lodge atGlen <strong>Daniel</strong>. He later became secretary of the lodge <strong>and</strong> served in thecapacity for over 50 years.He married Nettie May Calaway, daughter of George Calaway <strong>and</strong> SarahHinchman on September 26, 1894, in Raleigh County. Both of their sons,Doff C, <strong>and</strong> Ross Preston were also doctors.-Lewis <strong>Daniel</strong> was born October 23, 1852, in Raleigh County. He married SarahF. Ballard, daughter of James Blackburn Ballard <strong>and</strong> Evaline Workman, on February 26,1883, in Raleigh County. Their children were Sidney Preston, Elsie, Sylvia, Dennie, JThomas, Blaine, William, Fred, Emma, Eva, Edward, Otis, Delos, <strong>and</strong> <strong>Daniel</strong>.-Edward Henderson <strong>Daniel</strong> was born August 7, 1856, in Raleigh County <strong>and</strong> diedNovember 21, 1931, in Raleigh County. He was a retired miner <strong>and</strong> retained an interest incommunity affairs. He married Julia Catherine Snuffer on August 14, 1878, in RaleighCounty. Julia's parents were Owen Snuffer <strong>and</strong> Cleopatra Terry.
