Dr. James Meinsen, D.C.
Chiropractor, Exercise Physiologist
Phone: 607-359-BACK (2225)
#1. MEDICARE AND CHIROPRACTIC
BY: DR. MEINSEN, M.S., D.C.
Stay flexible my friend. Why, because medical
scientists define the onset of “AGING” as being
reduced joint flexibility.
Understand, your chronological age is not
the determinant factor in this regard. Reduced
joint flexibility is. It can happen when you are
young, in “middle age” or not until you become
very old, depending on your level and type of
physical activities. Gardening, in particular, is
noted to off-set aging; as a person can live to be
80 or older and technically not become part of
this aging statistical category if they have NOT
lost joint flexibility.
This biological fact is very significant; because
people in the “aging” category are more likely
to have health problems and illnesses when
compared to other human statistical categories.
Why should one unnecessarily become a member
of this “aged” group if it can be avoided or if this
inevitability can be prolonged several decades?
Unlike Medicaid, Medicare insurance will pay
for chiropractic and this can be a blessing. I’m
not suggesting the “activator” tool, or “blocking”
as chiropractic methods to achieve this; although
Medicare will pay for both! I recommend
light force, chiropractic, range-of-motion,
“manipulative” methods be done to the full-spine
and shoulders, “by-the-hand” along with a home
plan of stretching exercises.
You cannot sit in a chair or lie in bed all day
and remain flexible. If you don’t use it you loose
it. It requires physical activity and it takes a little
effort. This, along with chiropractic can help you
remain active in your old age.
Community Church of Woodhull
Submitted by Sharon Calkins
(4/7/13) Acts 1:1-9 As you take communion,
the choice is yours whether to it is ritual or life
changing. Jesus explained that the wine was
His blood and the bread was His body. We won’t
grade ourselves on how righteous we are; we all
come up short. We’re all on equal footing. You
may think that what you have done isn’t worth
God’s forgiveness. That’s not true. Jesus died
because He chose to, to save us all from our sins.
In Romans we read that all have sinned and fallen
short of the glory of God. That is why we come to
communion. After Jesus rose on the 3rd day, He
walked on earth for 40 days to convince people
that He was alive. He wanted them to share and
become witnesses to the world. He wants us to
be witness as well. We are to be witnesses to
our Jerusalem, Woodhull; our Judea, neighboring
towns; and Samaria, the people we dislike. He
told the disciples to become witnesses to all the
earth. We need to be His witnesses right where
we are. When was the last time you were His
witness, telling someone what Christ has done for
you and what He means to you? Jesus wants all
to be fed. Our services are at 9:30 in the Baptist
Church and we welcome you to worship with us
Sunday morning.
ADDISON POST Saturday, APRIL 13, 2013 Page 6
Dear Parents and students:
School Year 2012-2013 Issue 31 Page 3 of 5 April 12, 2013
The new Common Core Standards play a crucial role in helping us ensure that all of New York's students graduate
from high school with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college and careers. As we prepare
students in grades 3-8 to take the first Common Core state tests this month, we are continuing our efforts
to communicate directly to parents about the changes to the tests and what those changes will mean for students.
The new tests will reflect the Common Core Standards, so the tests will be more challenging. Students will be
asked to read more difficult texts, to use evidence to support their arguments, and to perform multiple-step
math problems. The number of students meeting or exceeding Common Core grade-level expectations should
not be interpreted as a decline in student learning or a decline in educator performance. The results from these
new assessments will give educators, parents, policymakers, and the public a more realistic picture of where
students are on their path to being well-prepared for the world that awaits them after they graduate from high
school.
Research has consistently demonstrated that students perform best on local, regional, statewide, or national
assessments when they have a great teacher delivering high quality instruction aligned to rigorous standards.
Rote test prep practices are incompatible with highly effective teaching and lead to lower student performance.
Changes to NYSED Grades 3-8 ELA and Math Tests: Assessing the Common Core
Beginning with the current school year (2012-13), NYSED is re-designing its assessment program (http://
engageny.org/resource/common-core implementation-timeline) to measure what students know and can do
relative to the grade-level Common Core State Standards. Specific changes to the Grades 3-8 ELA and math
tests (http://engageny.org/resource/test-guides-for-english-language-arts-and-mathematics) include the following:
1. Increases in Rigor – The CCSS are back-mapped, grade-by-grade, from college and career readiness.
Many of the questions on the Common Core assessments are more advanced and complex than those found
on prior assessments that measured prior grade-level standards.
2. Focus on Text – To answer ELA questions correctly, students will need to read and analyze each passage
completely and closely, and be prepared to carefully consider responses to multiple-choice questions. For constructed
response items, students will need to answer questions with evidence gathered from rigorous literature
and informational texts. Some texts will express an author’s point of view, with which not all readers will
agree.
3. Depth of Math – Students will be expected to understand math conceptually, use prerequisite skills with
grade-level math facts, and solve math problems rooted in the real-world, deciding for themselves which formulas
and tools (such as protractors or rulers) to use.
Ensuring College and Career Readiness for All – A Message from the NY State Commissioner of Education
New York’s graduation rates have increased in recent years. Of the public school students who entered ninth
grade in 2007, 74% percent graduated four years later. However, the good news about the rise in the graduation
rate does not tell a full story. Despite New York State having some of the most successful individual districts
and individual schools in the country, too many of our students do not graduate, and too many of our high
school graduates find themselves taking remedial courses when they enter college. These students pay college
tuition for learning that should have happened in high school, and students who take remedial courses in
college are less likely to finish their studies. Students who do not complete post-secondary education often
have to accept jobs that do not provide a family-supporting wage and do not offer potential for meaningful advancement.
This outcome hurts us all – our children, our families, New York, and the nation. When our educational
system fails to prepare so many of our children for success in college and their careers, we are all accountable.
Reform cannot be delayed.
Additionally , we are trying to keep the district’s mission statement front and center and review it often with
staff, students, parents, and community members.
We are proudly committed to excellence in preparing every student to become successful in a global
society through superior, innovative, educational opportunities that provide lifelong learning.
We will continue to work on what “successful” looks like for our students as a whole. Although state assessments
are not the only measure, they are a very visible component and are being redefined to measure readiness
and lifelong learning skills.

SOPHOMORE CAREER DAY
On March 20, 2013, Addison tenth grade students
attended Career Development Council’s 27 th
annual Sophomore Career Day at Alfred State College,
along with 342 students from Bath, Bradford,
Campbell-Savona, and Hammondsport and explored
24 careers with presenters from local businesses and
college professionals. Students pre-selected four career
sessions. Alfred State Interim President, Valerie
Nixon, welcomed students and provided insight into
what a college education can offer. Keynote speaker
Elaine Morsman of Alfred State shared tips from
current college students who were asked what they
wish they knew in high school. She encouraged students
to be open to new career directions. It is a rare
person who stays in the same career for a lifetime.
Our sophomores and others from the four
school districts had a taste of campus life, including
lunch in the dining hall. Many students now understand
the value of a winter coat after walking between
buildings on this blustery, snowy day.
Students were encouraged to ask questions.
When asked about salary, Web Development speaker,
Joel Dudley, pointed out that salary size should
not be the primary determining factor in a job
search. Family, friends, and other values need to be
considered in these decisions.
Corning Incorporated was the corporate sponsor
for this event. Other contributing partners were
Alfred State College, the Community Foundation of
Elmira-Corning and the Finger Lakes, Inc., Steuben
County Youth Bureau, and the five participating
school districts.
Bible Church
Why Should I
go to Church?
There is a myriad of reasons
why people don’t go
to church and some reason’s
that people should
not have for attending
church. Today’s question
is: Why should I go to
church?
Answer: Because the
Lord commands us to.
In Hebrews 10:24-25 it
says “And let us consider
how to stir up one another
to love and good works,
not neglecting to meet
together, as is the habit
of some, but encouraging
one another, and all
the more as you see the
Day drawing near.” Christianity
is not a solo-sport.
We are commanded to
provoke one another to
love and good works, and
meet together so that we
are able to encourage
and lift each other up.
The Day of Christ’s return
is drawing near and the
world is getting increasingly
wicked and Satan
is getting increasingly
desperate to get you to
fall into sin and spiritual
despair. Therefore, if you
are a Christian (a follower
of Jesus Christ) you are
commanded to join together
to be strengthened
in your faith. The
fellowship of the church is
illustrated in many ways
in scripture. In 1 Corinthians
12 the church
is a “body” using each
individual God-given gift
for the glory of the Lord; in
1 Corinthians 3 a “building”,
each member doing
his or her part in God’s
family. The idea is that
we are to be knit together
as a family, serving God
while we serve others
all for the Glory of God,
helping each other in time
of need, praying for each
other daily, encouraging
each other with uplifting
words and yes even to
lovingly correct if needed.
Village News and Issues:
Main Street parking. The Village Board has received several complaints about parking on Main Street, or the lack
thereof. In the last six years we have been very successful and have added several new businesses to the Main
Street district. Because of this, parking, at times, is limited on Main Street. Therefore the Village Board has asked that
all merchants, employees, and residents of Main Street to please NOT park on the street on Main Street. Everyone
should also be aware of and adhere to the two hour parking limit on Main Street and the NO OVERNIGHT PARK-
ING on Main Street as this hinders the DPW from street maintenance such as snow plowing and street sweeping.
The Village Board has asked the Addison Police to pay close attention to these issues. Parking tickets and possible
towing could result.
Often times, if there is NO place close to park, many customers will drive right by and their business will be lost.
NO ONE WANTS THIS TO HAPPEN. This summer the Village will be very busy with many projects going on. We
received a letter from NYS Department of Transportation stating that they will be repaving Route 417 through the
Village from Baldwin Avenue to the Route 15 four lane highways. In addition, our New York Main Street Grant Project
is moving forward. Several building facades will be rehabbed and beautified this summer along with the addition of
several new second floor apartments to Main Street. We are also planning on replacing the Main Street street lights
with new lights, along with underground wiring, plus the addition of new trash receptacles and sidewalk benches.
Don’t forget, “MUSIC IN THE PARK” will soon be here. If your organization or business would like to sponsor a
“MUSIC IN THE PARK” event this summer, please call the Addison Post or the Village Hall for details. Things are
happening in the Village of Addison once again. Together we can continue to “MAKE IT HAPPEN”
ADDISON POST Saturday, APRIL 13, 2013 Page 10
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month
Please join us in showing that you care about making a difference for the kids and families of our
community. Pinwheels and Promises events are being held across the county and the country to raise
awareness about what we can do to keep child abuse from ever happening in the first place.
Child Abuse Prevention Month is a celebration. It’s a celebration of childhood…and our belief that all
children deserve to grow up in families and communities that love them, nurture them and protect them.
The pinwheels that you will see around town stand as symbols of the carefree joy that childhood should
be all about …the kind of childhood we wish every child could have.
But wishing isn’t enough… Research says kids have the best chance for success when their parents
have a good understanding of the ages and stages of child development, access to resources in time
of need, and day- to- day support from support from family and friends. So… we are also celebrating
the power we have as parents, kinfolk, neighbors, and other caring adults to make our homes and our
communities peaceful, stable, safe places for our kids to grow up in.
Children and youth ages 0-17 make up only 25% of our total population but, guess what? They are
100% of our future. And we’re talking about the NEAR future…we know all too well how fast time flies…
before we know it these kids will be grown up…they will be our tradespeople, teachers, coaches, doctors,
bankers, and maybe most importantly the people who care for us in our old age. If they grow up
to be healthy, productive adults, we all win. In other words, if we help children do better today, we all
do better tomorrow. And that’s where the “Promises” come in.
All you have to do is, make and keep a promise to do something to make a difference in the life of child.
It can be as simple as slowing down and giving a child your undivided attention or lending your ear to a
parent who is really stressed out or it can be more involved like volunteering your time and talent for our
youth centers, church groups, or preschool programs. And …just in case you can’t think of anything…
go to the home page of Prevent Child Abuse America, www.preventchildabuse.org and click on “What
You Can Do”, for some great suggestions. While it’s true that families have the main responsibility for
raising their kids…families live in communities and if we want what’s best for kids..it takes all of us
doing our part. The most important thing is not WHAT you do, but that you do WHATEVER YOU CAN,
WHENEVER YOU CAN, to support strong families and nurture strong children!

Mary E. Jacobson
Rathbone Town Clerk - April 8, 2013
Dear Editor
Targeting Teens Tantrums
Late night groups, roaming streets for ideas to express
where their dire circumstances are as a means of
alerting us to whom it may concern.
Doing what they know we don’t want, as the sun rises
there somewhat sleeping in satisfaction half hoping
their cries of desperation won’t be heard, excusing
even more painful realities of helping themselves out
of delemmas apart from anyone who cares rather they
ever make it or not. Too scary is facing such challenges
unaccompanied, not having role models they can brag
on like normal kids would about proper dads or some
mentor trying to redirect their energies and steer um
clear of deep pitfalls ahead. No these types of outcasts
find other sorted survivors seeing some good in losers,
users, accepting they to are likely to end up abusers
of kindness, easy suckers and taking for granted any
input from helpers calling it overdo.
Time passing without any antics is silent rotting of
screaming souls.
Telling these young adults to be good is an insult to
their perspectives as if what they see, hear, feel, doesn’t
matter. Perpetuating the ignoring of their deadend
futures wasting their best years without hopes of ever
catching up.
“Jail you say” prison maybe if that ain’t enough but
then what the welfare lines paying people to stay out
of your way, leave you alone, to enjoy your lifestyle
by yourselves. Kids without good parenting or
equivalent of will be teens influenced by lure of short
cuts. Subsidizing bumming just to demonstrate our
ability isn’t providing compassion, looking away from
obvious needs curses hope, squelches conformity
like corruption dashes confidence. Guilty with stature
forgiven at the exclusion of poors justice is forfeiting
collective prosperity.
P.S. Thanks Dan Farrand 4 your resignation,
volunteering 2 community service.?
Palmesano Speaks With Students At 4-H
Legislative Breakfast
Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C,I-Corning) attended the 4-H Capital
Days Legislative Breakfast in Albany. 4-H is a volunteer-driven organization
that supports young people from elementary school through high school with
leadership opportunities and hands-on learning activities. At the breakfast,
Palmesano spoke with Joel Rosko from Campbell-Savona High School, who
is a 4-H participant, and his mother Regina.
“The 4-H organization has been a great asset to the development of young
people throughout the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes,” said Palmesano. “The
opportunity for students to engage in special projects, events and different
forms of learning helps them grow into thoughtful and thriving adults. I hope
4-H continues its success in creating accomplished young people.”
Dear Editor
In response to Carla
Barney’s letter to the
editor, all I have to
say is people that
live in glass houses
shouldn’t throw
stones. Example
one, in July 2011 Dan
Barney signed under
purgery that he witnessed
the signatures
on William Reagan’s
petition for Rathbone
town supervisor. As
this was proven to
be false, Mr. Barney
in fact did not witness
Mr. Reagans
petition. Therefore,
Mr. Reagans petition
was thrown out by
the Steuben County
board of elections.
In regards to ethics,
Mr. Barney for the
last several months
has stored his own
personal motorcycle
in the Rathbone town
highway barn. If you
review NY State Town
Law, you will find it
to be illegal for the
private use of town
property and equipment
by any individual
including Mr. Barney.
Should we now
contact the Steuben
County DA Offi ce or
beter yet the NY Attorney
General’s Offi
ce to get their legal
opinion?
In regards to the
advice that we received
from the Steuben
County Board
of Elections we preceded
as we were
led to believe was
the correct avenue.
Nine months later,
after the NY State Police
determined there
was no forgery on any
part of the candidates’
they expanded their
investigation to election
law. This is when
the board of elections
personnel denied that
they told us what they
had previously said in
regards to checking
box 1A.
As letters to the editor
are restricted to the
number of words, if
anyone has any questions
relative to the
investigation please
feel free to contact
me.
Sincerely,
Host A Foreign
Exchange Student
Several host families drove up to Niagara
Falls for a great day together. We
visited the Genesee Country Museum
to learn about early American life. We
chartered a bus to NYC for our host
families and friends to see the Broadway
show, Newsies, visit Central Park, and
climb (and I do mean, climb) the Empire
State building (at least the last 6 fl oors).
We fl ew to Orlando to spend 4 days at
Walt Disney World. We traveled to Albany,
to tour the NYS Capitol and visit the
NYS Museum. We traveled to Vermont
to visit a Revolutionary War monument
and a Vermont High School. We traveled
to Ohio, to visit Kent State University
to attend a dance performance. We
visited the ARC of Steuben in Bath to
learn about diversity. We volunteered
at local businesses to learn about Free
Enterprise. Our students have presented
at colleges, high schools, elementary
schools, and churches to share their
cultures. We visited a local courthouse to
learn about democracy. These dedicated
students have earned hundreds of hours
volunteering at local schools, churches,
and Fire and Ambulance departments.
We have had rollerskating, ice skating
and bowling parties. And the year isn’t
even over yet. What’s up next? Job
Shadowing. Two of our students will be
shadowing at WENY-TV. Others will be
shadowing with doctors, lawyers and
engineers in the area.
If you are interested in hosting a Foreign
Exchange student with a group of families
that likes to have fun, contact Terri Rogers
The Man, The
Prince and
The King
Submitted by Marie
Freeman Grace
The man burst into the
throne room and approached
the King. All
eyes turned to the angry
and distraught man.
Every person in the kingdom
knew not of the man’s
misfortunes, but the pain
and desperation on his
face told them there were.
What they did not know of
was how the man was being ruined. Jealousy and deceit
drove his enemies to mock him into oppression. He
faced an empty house, pockets, and a sore and parched
spirit. The poor man had sent petitions to the king, but
he heard nothing back. Much time and unanswered
petitions passed and he now stood in front of the King.
The King turned to the man but did not have time
to react as the man’s anger and confusion took over.
“I am losing everything. My friends have become my
enemies and have taken everything from me. They say,
‘Now we have victory over him!’ My mind is clouded and
my direction unsure. I have cried out to You many times
because have you not said that You would be there for
me when I cry out?! Why haven’t You answered my
pleas?! Have You forgotten me?” he nearly screamed.
In his anger he turned and left before he could see
a man step out to take his place. This man looked up
to the King and bowed.
“You have forgiven him, Father. This is the man of
whose petitions I have delivered to You.” the Prince
said to the King.
“The same I have acted upon.” the King stood as his
son approached Him. “Continue to be beside him as
his petitions are answered.” the King motioned to one of
His servants. “I have one more thing to do.” He smiled
and motioned for His servant to follow Him.
The man entered his empty house. His spirit was not
filled, and his anger not put out. Crumpling into tears
he fell asleep in a corner. The Prince watched over the
man until morning and went out into the town. The man
awoke to a loud bang on the door. He ran to answer it
and found the petitions he had sent nailed to his door
and a wagon with all that he had owned or had wished
to own. He looked around to see who had done this for
him. Just past the cart he saw the King’s guards taking
away his suppressors and loading their possessions
on the wagon before him. Sudden realization melted
his heart and he fell to his knees. His friends rejoiced
around him.
“The King has been with you!” they shouted. One
came and whispered in his ear. “We knew He would.
We sent our own petitions along with yours.”
This was too much for the man. He stumbled to his
feet and ran to the castle. The Prince met him at the
castle gate and escorted him in. Once the Prince saw
the King they both shared a smile and the King nodded
his approval. The Prince stepped back and let the man
approach the King.
Tears welled in the man’s eyes and he could not meet
the King’s eyes. Sorrowful shame and regret plagued
his heart. He fell to his knees as he mumbled, “I am
so sorry.” the man could feel the cold hard floor on his
forehead.
The King stood from His throne and descended the
steps to where the man lay bowed. “My Son has covered
everything for you.” The King kneeled down to the
man and lifted his face. “You asked, and now you have
received. I have blessed many people through you.”
The man embraced the King and thanked Him. Leaving
the castle, his heart was overjoyed and everything
set right.
“Let us, then, feel very sure that we can come before
God’s throne where there is grace. There we can
receive mercy and grace to help us when we need it.”
~Hebrews 4:16
In most movies a just king or hero of the film will
come and kneel down and help those at his feet back
on their feet. It is a perfect display of grace. We can
come to God with anything, by yelling or crying, and He
still kneels down and picks us up because He sees His
own Son, Jesus, within us and all that He has done for
us. Everything will work out in His perfect timing, just
be prepared to receive two-four times the amount you
expect, and that the people around you will be blessed.
Praying Is Good For The Soul
Praying is good for the soul and therapeutic for our personal well-being. Developing a prayer
life helps give us the grace to accept things in this life as they are, and the hope of God’s mercy
toward us in the next. Each day we should thank our Lord for all the days of life He has given
us. We should realize that, a part from God, everything else is of little value. If all the sufferings
and joys of our past draw us closer to our Father in Heaven, they were of immeasurable value.
Praying for the needs of others as well as praying for our own personal desires is important in
our prayer life. Intercessory prayer for our loved ones and friends is not only favored by God, it
also helps to make us mindful of the needs of others. We have a wonderful God and although we
are not always able to understand His decisions and methods, we know He loves us and wants
only the best for us.
