Pinnacle Honor Society Returns to UNC Charlotte
As a part of National Adult Student week, UNC Charlotte and the Office of Adult Students and Evening
Services (OASES) reinstated their involvement with Pinnacle Honor Society and inducted twenty-two student
members on November 8, 2011. Pinnacle Honor Society specifically honors adult and non-traditional students
who in addition to being successful academically also participate in their community. The selected students
were honored at a reception along with their family and friends. Lance Wirsing, Food and Beverage Manage
at the Charlotte Country Club, spoke on his experiences as a former nontraditional student and Pinnacle
member where he balanced school, work, family and community. Each student selected for recognition
received a lapel pin, a diploma seal, and a membership certificate.
New Pinnacle member Sandra
Gilbertson stated, “Being recognized
for my good grades and
work outside of school was the
most rewarding experience I have
ever had. It really shows that my
hard work has paid off. All I
want to do is strive to be a good
role model for my family and
peers and being recognized by the
Pinnacle Society is a symbol for
just that and I am very proud and
honored to be a part of this
group!” Glen Cashetta added,
“Most people do not understand
the courage it took to return to the
academic world after so many years. When I received my membership into the Pinnacle Honor Society, it
touched my heart to be recognized not only for my academic merits but also my work in the community.”
Pinnacle inductees met the following criteria: (a) qualify as adult or non-traditional students under locallyderived
and maintained definitions, (b) have senior status, (c) have a minimum cumulative grade point average
of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, (d) have been involved in at least three community and/or campus activities, (e) demonstrate
leadership, persistence, and future promise, (f) maintain the highest ethical standards. After students
filled out the application and submitted an essay, a committee of faculty and staff select students for membership.
Musings of a nontraditional student studying abroad by Lori Perkovich
Check out Lori’s blog of her travels
while attending King’s College:
http://loriperkovich.wordpress.com/
Most of my career was spent representing musicians and dancers, first
as a manager and later as a publicist in California (San Francisco and
Los Angeles). I eventually wound up in sports, which is how I ended
up living in North Carolina. After about a full year of covering NAS-
CAR for an online magazine and traveling back and forth between NC
and CA, I was offered a full-time position as a communications manager
with a NASCAR team, and I took it.
I moved to NC in 2007, and traveled so much with NASCAR that I
maybe visited my home once a week, but I enjoyed it. At the end of
that year I was laid-off and unsure of what to do next. The looming job
crisis that I had been caught up in, quickly spread across the country
and I needed to figure out what to do. I put everything in storage and
spent 2008 working on music projects in Los Angeles and New York.
After interviewing for a job where I was told I would need to be able to
talk about football all day, I realized that a major transformation was in
order.
There have always been issues or causes that I have been involved
with, but I had never thought about how to work on any of them fulltime
and get paid, until that moment. This process led me back to
school in pursuit of a Political Science degree.
I am what is referred to as a non-traditional student. I attend UNC
Charlotte in NC and have almost completed a BA in International
Studies with a European concentration, a BA in Political Science, and
a minor in Africana studies.
Currently, I am studying abroad at King’s College London and this
blog started as a way to chronicle my travels in Europe with my sister,
other family members and on my own. I am not sure what form it will
take once I return home, but there should be plenty of stories to tell…
Mentor/Mentee Team Comments:
It has been a pleasure getting to
know my mentee. She is a bright
young woman and I have enjoyed
being her mentor. Being a mentor
has been a great experience and I
gained a friend in the process!
Thank you for the opportunity!
“The mentoring experience was very
helpful to me as a first year transfer
student. Through my mentor, I
learned about most of the resources
that are available to students, both old
and new. Any questions or concerns
that I had, my assigned mentor answered
these questions to the best of
her ability. I am thankful and happy
that I participated in this program
because I gained not only knowledge, but also a new
friend.” Yeng Yang, Fall 2011
