2012: A NEW BEGINNING
This is an exciting time for RareFind: The nursery has
undergone a welcome rebirth over the past year. On June 28,
2012, RareFind Nursery was purchased by Oliver Hamill. Like
many of us, Oliver is a self-described “plant nut.” He grew up
spending many hours in his grandmother’s wildflower garden
in Central New Jersey, which began a lifelong exploration of
woodlands and wild places, both local and abroad. Oliver
practiced landscape design for many years, and is currently
a managing partner and one of the owners of Cherry Grove
Farm in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. (Page 46)
Like many who discover RareFind Nursery, Oliver was
delighted to find a source for some of the unusual,
hard-to-find plants he had seen in the wild throughout his life.
When the opportunity to buy RareFind presented itself, Oliver
could not resist. His decision has not only kept the nursery
intact, but has ensured that RareFind will continue to
contribute to the horticultural richness of the Garden
State—and beyond.
RareFind Nursery has already undergone significant changes
under Oliver’s leadership: We’ve constructed new
greenhouses that will increase and improve our productivity.
We plan to do more advertising to increase our customer
base. We’ll be attending more offsite events in 2013 to make
it easier for our customers to communicate and learn more
about us. We’ve made improvements in the RareFind catalog
and we’ll be getting it out earlier than ever before. We’re
looking at all aspects of our business, making improvements
wherever necessary to improve our customers’ experience
and produce an even better product. And of course, we’ll
keep you apprised of the changes and improvements as they
occur during the year. As always, we welcome your feedback.
The experienced, longstanding nursery team at RareFind has
been strengthened by Oliver’s involvement. With your
continued support, RareFind Nursery will continue to grow
and offer rare, unusual, and forgotten plants that you’ll never
see at your local garden center. We look forward to your
visits over the coming year, and sincerely hope that 2013 will
prove to be a good year for all of us.
General Manager
RareFind Nursery officially opens on Saturday, March 16,
2013 and closes November 30, 2013.
To accommodate our nursery customers and visitors, we will
be open five (5) Sundays during the busy Spring season. The
Sundays when we will be open are: March 17th, April 7th,
April 21th, May 5th, and May 19th.
We’ve made improvements to the catalog again:
We’ve color coded the different plant categories to make them
easier to locate, and plant descriptions are always to the right
of the picture. “New Plants” are also featured in the catalog.
Gift Certificates now have an expiration date to comply with
New Jersey regulations. They are valid for two (2) years from
date of purchase.
We will be traveling to several off-site events: MANTS in
Baltimore in early January, Plant-O-Rama in Brooklyn in late
January, Ladew Gardens in Baltimore in May, Earthly
Delights in May/June and PHS at the Philadelphia Naval Yard
in September. Check our website for other locations and
specific dates for these events.
RAREFIND NURSERYÕS STAFF
RareFind NurseryÕs staff consists of a small group of
dedicated plant enthusiasts who are fundamentally
concerned about growing superior plants and getting them
to our customersÕ gardens in excellent condition. This year,
in addition to their individual academic experience, each
staff member has written a brief offering of some of their
favorite plants.
JASON AUSTIN: BS in Ornamental Horticulture from
Delaware Valley College.
ÒSarracenia purpurea, or purple pitcher plant is a perennial
that may not work directly in the garden, but growing
carnivorous plants in containers has become all the rage here
at RareFind. We have a diverse array of seed-grown plants
from many secret spots in the Pine Barrens that represent a
cross-section of local variation and adaptability. Any sunny
spot in your yard would be great for a small bog garden where
you could combine not just carnivorous plants, but orchids,
cranberries, and myriad other rarities only offered at RareFind
Nursery. Another plant would be Pycnanthemum torreyi, or
TorreyÕs mountain mint. This plant is native to a very specific
cliffside niche in New Jersey, with only one or two locations
remaining. It grows in gravelly sands and rock outcroppings
with little or no soil holding it in place. With these types of soils
prominent throughout New Jersey, here is a rugged yet
beautiful perennial that needs no special coddling.Ó
ANNE HAINES: BS in horticulture from Rutgers and an
MS in Entomology from the University of Florida.
ÒThere are some plants that have endeared themselves to me
because of certain characteristics like fragrance, color or
unusual time of bloom. I really like the perennial Lithodora
ÔGrace WardÕ because itÕs a beautiful bright blue color,
blooms for a long time and deer donÕt eat it! For fragrance,
Gardenia ÔChuck HayesÕ and ÔCrown JewelÕ are hard to beat.
The flowers are lovely, creamy white set off by shiny
evergreen leaves. The deciduous azalea ÔLemon LightsÕ is a
winner because it is the only one I know that re-blooms in the
fall, and it is fragrant as well, with pretty lemon-yellow
flowers. Almost all hydrangeas are favorites of mine, but
thereÕs a viburnum, V. macrocephalum, that looks just like a
white mophead hydrangea! It starts out green and turns
white, sometimes re-blooming in the fall.Ó
KATHERINE ÒKITTYÓ HLUBIK: BS in Plant Science
from the University of Delaware.
ÒPlants that offer dark crimson or maroon leaf color have
always attracted my attention. Loropetalum chinense var.
rubrum has proven to be a winner in my garden. It retains the
pg. 2
dark maroon foliage color all year. Hot pink flowers welcome
the onset of spring. The growth habit is upright with strong
ascending branches, and the plant hasnÕt yet tempted the
large deer population on our farm to even taste it. It was
labeled ÒChinese FuchsiaÓ when purchased several years
ago so we really donÕt know its true name. It would look
stunning planted with the bright chartreuse evergreen,
Illicium parviflorum ÔFlorida SunshineÕ.Ó
IRVING ÒIRVÓ J PAULUS: BS in Economics from
Wheeling and MBA in Marketing from Fairleigh Dickinson
University.
ÒI like Lunaria annua, also known as Money Plant.Ó
RON RABIDEAU: BS in Plant & Soil Science from the
University of Massachusetts.
ÒI see lots of plants come and go through the nursery. In
order to hold my attention over the long term a plant has to
impress me on many levels. The hybrid Calycanthus
ÔHartlage WineÕ is one such plant. It has a hybrid vigor that is
unrivaled: this plant can put on at least three feet a season.
Large, semidouble, four-inch goblet flowers the color of
Merlot cover the plant in May as the large rounded leaves
unfurl. Throughout the summer occasional flowers appear
here and there. The large leaves and flowers lend a tropical
effect to northern gardens. A similar plant new this year is
Calycanthus ÔAphroditeÕ. It has all the same attributes plus
the promise of fragrant flowers.Ó
A WILLIAM ÒBILLÓ SMITH: Teaching degree from
Glassboro State College.
ÒAmong the 70 cultivars in my collection of Witch Hazels,
Hamamelis ÔAuroraÕ is a favorite. Its fragrant flowers are the
largest in the genus, plus it has good fall leaf color. Another
favorite is the pitcher plant ÔGreen DragonÕ. I hybridized this
plant using the all green form of our native Saraccenia
purpurea crossed with a hybrid Sarracenia ÔGreen MonsterÕ.Ó
JERRY VANDE SANDE: BA in English from Rutgers.
ÒMy plan for my own garden is to have something going on
throughout the year. Of major interest to me are the various
forms of Rhododendrons that bloom over a 7-month season
starting in March. The lepidotes start the season and
dauricums lead the pack and sometimes sichotense blooms
even earlier. Later the big-leafed elepidotes come into their
own. Formosanum is a very early one but the king of the
early hybrids has to be the bright red ÔTaurus.Õ One perennial
that really impresses me is the grass Muhlenbergia whose
pink cloud of seed heads lasts into the winter. A
well-planned garden from my perspective means never
waiting for the right season.Ó

ABOUT OUR PLANTS
RareFind Nursery wants to offer its customers good value
for the money they spend. That means good-sized, healthy
plants with large root systems. Most of our plants are grown
right here at the nursery, but we obtain some plants from
other specialty nurseries as well. Many of the plants we
offer are not available anywhere else, so we must propagate
them ourselves. Generally it takes from 1 to 2 years (or at
least 2 growing seasons) to produce a plant from a cutting.
We ask for your patience in obtaining more of plants that are
out of stock.
PLANT SIZES
Although we do not generally specify container sizes in
the catalog, most of the plants we ship (with the exception
of perennials) are grown in a 1, 2 or 3 gallon pot. PLANT
SIZES SHOWN IN THE CATALOG / WEBSITE DO NOT
INCLUDE THE ROOT BALL. We try to be conservative when
measuring plants so that you may well receive a larger plant
than you ordered.
Our plants are usually larger than those of our competitors,
but at a similar price. We feel larger plants have significant
advantages:
• they ship better than those in smaller containers
• their larger root systems transplant and establish
themselves easier
• they tolerate adverse garden conditions better than
plants with smaller root systems
WE DO NOT SHIP BARE ROOT PLANTS!
We are sometimes asked if our trees and shrubs are shipped
bare root. NO!!! All our shrubs and trees are shipped with
an established root ball and evidence of viability. A few
perennials may be shipped bare root, but they are the
exception rather than the rule.
PLANT AVAILABILITY AND PRICING
Catalog prices are based upon the expected size of the
plants available for spring shipment. Most plants are in stock
when the catalog is written. All plants are subject to prior sale.
We will reserve plants for spring shipment on a “first come,
first serve” basis, and quantities may be limited, so ORDER
EARLY! Prices are subject to change after June 30, 2013. You
may use the catalog listings when ordering after that date
and we will notify you of any size or price adjustments. We do
not substitute unless you instruct us to do so.
PACKING
We take great pride in our packing, and appreciate the many
positive notes we receive about the great condition in which
our plants arrive. Plants are removed from their container,
loose soil is removed, the root balls are wrapped in plastic
and the tops in paper. Some smaller plants are shipped in
their containers. We ship large plants (up to 4-5' trees) in
reinforced boxes. There is an extra charge of $20.00 for
larger plants that require oversized boxes, indicated by
“oversized shipping” or “add extra shipping” in the plant size
in the catalog.
OUR GUARANTEE (IT’S SIMPLE):
If you are unhappy with anything we do, please let us
know. We will endeavor to make it right! We guarantee
our plants for one growing season after purchase. Please
let us know as soon as possible if you experience any
problems or have questions. We assume our customers
will be conscientious in planting and care, but we are
not responsible for conditions beyond our control (such
as site conditions, weather, damage by animals,
lawnmowers and acts of God.)
EXTRA LARGE RHODODENDRONS
(AND OTHER PLANTS)
In addition to our 1 and 3 gallon rhododendrons, we carry a
wide range of 7 and 15 gallon and “balled-and-burlapped”
(B&B) rhododendrons—most of which are in the 2-4 foot
range. These are newer or choice varieties which are difficult,
if not impossible, to obtain elsewhere.
We also have a selection of other plants in larger sizes, including
Japanese maples, magnolias, redbuds and dogwoods. Most
of these larger plants are not listed in this catalog as they are
too large to ship. If you need a special plant for that special
spot, please visit our website or call.
Rhododendron 'Joseph Dunn'
(minus X racemosum). G. David Lewis. Many
popular lepidote hybrids bloom early, but 'Joseph
Dunn' blooms later, in concert with the largerflowered
elepidote varieties. An upright growing,
compact lepidote that covers itself with a profusion
of bright pink flowers in mid-May, its habit and
bloom make it a worthy competitor for attention
during peak bloom time. Zones 5-7. H: 3-4 ft · W:
Rhododendron 'June Bee'
('Yaku Fairy' x 'Mary Fleming'). Berg. A compact
grower that is, in effect, a white 'Ginny Gee'. Even
though a dwarf, it is still a vigorous grower and
reliable in both heat and cold. Named by Warren
Berg after a dear friend, June Sinclair, and is still
rarely offered. We have had this plant for a number
of years and strongly recommend it. Zones 5-7. H:
beacon of spring brightness is a hard color to
capture in words or on film. From a distance, it
appears to be the sought-after and elusive hardy
red lepidote. Up close, the color becomes an
intense fuchsia-pink. Vase-shaped and fully
clothed, with foliage turning bronzy-black in winter.
plants play supporting roles rather than starring
ones. A great choice for separating the strong
colors of other plants in the late April garden, as
the combination of pale yellow from R.keiskei and
rays of salmon pink from R.racemosum produce a
unique effect. Attractive bronzy winter foliage on a
lepidote of choice. Think of it as a PJM-type
rhododendron, but covered with trusses of
exceptional white flowers and set off by dark green
and glossy foliage. Growth habit is compact and
upright. As with all lepidotes, provide sharp
drainage and enjoy the early-mid April bloom.
