We had a great time at our last
Chelsea Flower Show and thank
you for all your support. However,
as you can see we are NOT retiring, just
creating more time in which to indulge my
passion for growing plants some of which
have made it into this catalogue. The white
asphodel (page 6) has long been a stalwart
of our summer border where it flowers with
scarlet poppies and at last we have enough to
sell. Another exciting introduction is the new
range of iris whose official name is almost
longer than they are – miniature tall bearded
iris! These tiny gems are exactly like their
tall counterpart but only 14” tall and totally
in proportion to their stature. We also have
enough to spare of the fine Turkish graveyard iris
I. biliottii (page 23) which I have been growing for some
25 years.
An unintentional consequence of the London Olympics
was a raising of awareness of one of the stalwarts of this
catalogue – Galtonia candicans (page 19) which is also
our stunning cover subject. This, and another of our
introductions, the amazing New Zealand Gladiolus Ruby
(page 18) , featured in the magnificent wild meadow plantings
around the park. I was not a fan of the traditional tall gladiolus
until I saw Plum Tart scattered among the feathery stems
of Gaura at Hyde Hall and had to try it. Here it is equally
at home among blue asters. The third new gladiolus is a
dramatic dwarf scarlet species G.flanniganii.
“That was the year that was!!”
We have been reworking some of our original shade
borders and have been adding lilies for summer interest after
the snowdrops etc have disappeared. Sweet Surrender
and the deep red martagon were so good we had to
include them (page 29). The rather underrated Roscoea
(page 33) are also at home here and are such rewarding plants,
in flower for nearly all the summer. Other new plants for shade
are the improved colour forms of Helleborus x Hybridus,
better known as H. orientalis (page 19) and the Japanese gem
Helloniopsis orientalis.
Hopefully we have found something to whet your appetite.
Do please check out our new look website and all these and
more are in our online store.
The main autumn catalogue, comprising our comprehensive range of Daffodils, Tulips, Crocus, bulbous Irises etc., is
published in June each year and will continue to be sent out immediately before the Chelsea Flower Show in late May.
The garden and nursery are open to view every weekday (9am - 4pm; £2) in aid of the St. Margaret’s
Somerset Hospice. We have limited seasonal plant sales. We are a working mail order nursery but you may collect your
orders in season (please give us advanced notice).
These bulbs are for garden decoration only and should not be eaten.
CYCLAMEn
Hardy Cyclamen in general are far better planted as growing plants than as dormant
bulbs. Due to the fragility of their leaf stalks we prefer to despatch late in their growing
season when they are naturally dying back. All tubers are dug daily for immediate
despatch. All Cyclamen require a humus-rich soil that is well drained. They are summer
dormant – an annual top dressing of bone meal and leaf mould or composted bark is
beneficial. They appreciate a little peat on planting to aid rooting. All varieties have
distinctive leaves which are very variable and give great interest in the garden, both before
and after the flowers appear. Except for Cyclamen repandum (see description) they
should be planted with the tops of the tubers one inch below the soil surface. They prefer
to be planted as under:
GALANTHUS (Snowdrops) in growth
We pride ourselves on our collection of Snowdrops. It is well known to be another plant which resents being dried out and,
therefore, prefers to be moved in full growth in the spring. Plant the bulbs, preferably in small clumps, 3” to 4” deep and 3” apart
under ornamental trees and shrubs. In light or sandy soil it is advisable to dig in some good loam; in a very heavy soil dig in a little
compost or leaf mould and sand.
Stocks of special snowdrops are small and quickly sell out so please order early. We will also publish a list of
rarer hybrids on our website in February or you can send us a stamped addressed envelope for the list.
These plants behave very like snowdrops and resent an interruption to their growth.
However, we list the taller varieties in our Autumn catalogue as their luxuriant foliage in late
spring makes successful packing impractical. They have now been divided into two separate
species – Acis and Leucojum.
AUTUMNALE
(Acis autumnalis)
Has two or three bell-shaped
flowers of white tinged with pink.
Nerine bowdenii
NEriNE (Autumn Lily)
One of the joys of autumn is the sight of an established clump of nerines in full flower. The
bowdenii forms are the hardiest preferring a sunny spot. They are perfect at the base of
a wall where they should be allowed to form large congested clumps. Only divide them
when the bulbs push themselves right out of the ground and they stop flowering. The other
varieties are hardy in frost free areas but make easy pot plants.
BOWDENii
The bulbs produce a flower stem with
one rather loose umbel of up to eight
pink flowers. Plant against a sunny wall
and leave to clump.
LiLiUM (Lily)
Lilies require a fertile well-drained soil with an uninterrupted supply of moisture while they
are growing. They should be planted 6”-8” deep. In heavy soils, sand must be added below
the bulb to prevent water logging. Most make excellent subjects for pots. We recommend
soaking the bulb for one hour in plain water before planting. All require a regular supply of
water when in growth and benefit from a liquid feed.
