com - free) are two very fine Internet sites with tons of information and scores of 

forums to connect you with gardeners from all over the world including central 

Ohio. Highly recommended.

IN ONE YEAR AND OUT THE OTHER 

Here we go again kids, time for our yearly review of the world around us and a 

preview of new plants we’re growing to beautify your world. 

It’s a presidential election year, in case you hadn’t noticed. The Republicans have 

hired the same guy that schedules the Major League Baseball season to schedule 

the endless series of debates. If you scoff at that, consider this: there are about 

162 debates (same amount as the games) with an All-Star break in the middle (the 

convention) and the World Series in the Fall (the election). I rest my case. 

We lost a giant last year. Arch West, the retired Frito-Lay marketing executive 

credited with creating Doritos as the first national tortilla chip brand, died in Dallas 

at age 97. Per his wishes, Mr. West was laid to rest in an oversized Doritos Nacho 

Cheese bag. The huge crowd was standing room only, due to the high number of 

Dorito-crazed potheads paying their respects. 

In August, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck, of all places, Washington DC. 

It caused considerable damage to the National Cathedral and the Washington 

Monument but, sadly, the Capitol Building and all its congressional inhabitants 

escaped unharmed. 

The 2011 winner for Ad Slogan of the Year goes to Charmin for ‘We all go, why not 

enjoy the go?’ 

In a campaign speech, Newt Gingrich promised that by the end of 

his second term, the US will have a base on the moon. His wife Calista 

already has her space helmet - no, wait, that’s her hairdo. Many 

conspiracy theorists are claiming that Newt’s moon speech was faked. 

Another sad loss last year was Super Glue inventor Harry Coover, 

who died at age 94. Always the prankster, Harry arranged for the 

sticky stuff to be placed on the handles of his coffin. Everyone but the pallbearers got 

a well-needed laugh. 

In medical news, Loretta Smith, a 70-year-old woman from Cuyahoga Falls, 

suffered a stroke but was able to reach a phone to dial her son for help. In her 

distress, she misdialed and actually called a man in Denver. Fortunately, he was able 

to call 911 and send the medics to her, saving her life. Unfortunately, when she saw 

the bill for the ambulance ride to Colorado, she suffered a heart attack. 

In England, a novice bank robber was so nervous that he mistakenly gave his gun to 

the teller instead of his holdup note. After pleading in vain for her to give it back, he 

fled empty handed. At least he still had his note for a souvenir. 

Enough of this foolishness; on to the new plants. This year’s crop of new annuals 

includes a new series of Coleus from Hort Couture. Under the Sea features crazy, 

lacy, scallopy foliage in a variety of great colors. By the way, you’ll find Hort Couture 

plants only at independent garden centers... you know, like us. We have some new 

dark-leaved Dahlias - the Mystics - that are the best yet. All of our Impatiens hanging 

baskets will feature the Spellbound series, a big improvement over seed varieties. 

There are several new Petunias including the Sweetunia Orange Flash and Supertunia 

White Russian. Scaevola Suntastic is the first great yellow <strong>fan</strong> flower and First Yellow 

is the first yellow geranium, period. Don’t miss the new variegated corn, Field of 

Dreams. Beautiful foliage and you can pop the kernels. 

New perennials include the dwarf series of butterfly bushes, Buzz Magenta and 

Buzz Purple. We’re growing a gorgeous red and yellow truly hardy mum called 

Matchsticks and a striking new yellow and orange Gaillardia named Moxie. Want 

new veggies? We’ll have a bunch including the hot Zimbabwe Bird Pepper, a great 

producing yellow grape tomato called Ildi and the new dark blue tomato, Indigo Rose. 

There you go, over 300 new plants. Oh, and remember to vote....early and often.

TITIAN STATEMENT 

As any good student of art will tell you, Titian was a famous and influential painter 

from the Italian Renaissance period known for his brilliant use of color. He was a 

member of the 16th-century Venetian School, often donating his paintings for the 

PTO fundraising raffles.

LOCO FOR LOCAL 

You are a local, so why not shop locally? Obviously it’s not possible to buy 

everything you need from local sources; even your small local businesses can’t always 

do that themselves. And buying local isn’t always the most affordable choice either. 

But if we don’t make the effort to support local, independently owned businesses 

we have much much to lose. We may think we are winning when we get that great 

bargain at the big box store but the only one that wins is the big box store. For 

every $100 dollars spent at locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to the 

community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. If you spend that same 

$100 at a national chain only $43 stays here. Spend it online and nothing comes 

home. Just a 10% shift from chain to local in Franklin County will generate $312 

million dollars and 5000+ new jobs. Small local businesses are the largest employer 

nationally and in our community. The more you can choose local over the national 

chains the better it is for your community, the economy, the environment, and you. 

The shift from local to national stores over the last half-century has had a major 

impact on our communities. For instance, 100 years ago 40 cents of every dollar 

made by a small farm went directly to the farmer. Today only 7 cents goes directly 

to the farmer. Big box stores continue to displace local stores that can’t compete. 

National chains often bring loss of employment. The opening of a Wal-Mart reduces 

retail employment by an average of 150 jobs in the county of its location. Michael 

H. Shuman, author of ‘Going Local’ writes, “Going local does not mean walling 

off the outside world. It means nurturing locally owned businesses that use local 

resources sustainably, employ local workers at decent wages and serve primarily local 

consumers. It means becoming more self-sufficient and less dependent on imports. 

Control moves from the boardrooms of distant corporations and back into the 

community where it belongs.” 

Buying local can help reduce environmental impact as well. Locally owned 

businesses are more likely to purchase raw materials locally which uses less 

transportation and creates less pollution. 

Just imagine life without your favorite local business. One-of-a-kind businesses 

are an integral part of the distinctive character of a place. At local stores you can often 

find high quality, unique items that you can’t find anywhere else. Local businesses 

often hire people with a better understanding of the products they are selling and take 

more time to get to know their customers. Baker’s Acres has been a proud member 

of this Buy Local movement for 30 years. We are very grateful to all of our wonderful 

customers who have helped us achieve this milestone and we hope to serve all of you 

in our community for at least another 30 years. Thank you all and spread the word.

WHAT IS THIS? 

What is this thing you’re reading right now? We’ve struggled for years for the right 

term for our catalog. It’s not actually a catalog, having no prices and no descriptions. 

It’s too large for a pamphlet. Would that make it a pamph? Is it a brochure...not 

sure. We could call it a roster but that could foster a sports allusion. If we called it a 

list we would miss the gist of what it’s all about. Printed matter sounds strange and 

horticultural compendium is way too stuffy. A booklet implies that it’s almost a book 

which in turn implies literature, which this certainly is not. I guess we’ll just have to 

call this ‘The Papery Thing with the Words and Stuff’. That’s got a nice ring to it.

Hey, wait a minute. These two lists are almost the same. The big difference is you 

guys get the best parking spaces. 

PRICES 

There are no prices in this catalog. That’s because we don’t know what they are yet. 

Too many factors are yet to be determined in our price making process, not the least 

of which is the price of oil. How does that affect flowers? Most of our pots and flats 

are made of plastic, which is made from oil. We heat with propane (an oil product) 

and many of our starter plants are shipped from points across the nation requiring jet 

fuel, diesel and gasoline, although we make every effort to buy locally or regionally. 

With the price of oil high and going up and down, it’s just too hard to set a price right 

now. We will make every effort to keep things within reason and you can be assured 

that our prices will be very fair while our quality will remain high. We certainly 

are not out to gouge anyone but we do need to make a profit to stay in business. 

Otherwise we’d have to go out and get real jobs.

HARDY PERENNIALS 

This list includes perennials, ferns, 

ornamental grasses, ground covers and 

alpines. All plants are cold hardy in Zone 

5 except where noted. Even the marginal 

plants can be grown successfully with 

the careful selection of just the right site. 

For example, we had Begonia evansiana 

(Zone 6) growing next to our north side 

foundation for 10 years. This is known as 

‘site specific’ hardiness and relies on good 

fortune more than anything else.

THE ‘NOT QUITE ALL NIGHT 

EXTRAVAGANZA’ 

This year’s Extravaganza, the 123rd 

annual, will be held on Friday, May 11th 

from 8 pm until 11 pm. For those of 

you who are unaware of this incredible 

event, it’s a great big party at night in 

the greenhouse and, since it’s at night 

and kinda dark, we string loads of lights 

everywhere and hope the fuses don’t blow, 

which they sometimes do. The lovely 

Alexandria Ladies will be serving delicious 

and nutritious food at absolutely no cost 

to you or your loved ones. This year’s 

entertainment will once again feature the 

musical and vocal stylings of Dave Harris 

and Jamburger, perhaps the greatest rock 

and roll band in the history of music... 

perhaps not, but they are pretty darn 

good, especially the keyboard player. 

Ladies, please try to control yourselves. 

No throwing items of a personal nature. 

You’re probably saying to yourself, “That

‘FEED ME, SEYMOUR’ 

In April, May and June we get really 

hungry and none of us have time to bake 

so we’re willing to trade food for flowers. 

Oddly enough, we call this the ‘Food For 

Flowers’ program. We will gladly issue 

you $10 in Baker Bucks for one of the 

following: a cake, a pie, 3 dozen cookies, 

or a coffee cake. Additionally, food that 

is actually healthful and non-fattening 

will be accepted if it doesn’t require 

heat or cold to keep it that way. Finger 

food would be helpful. All items must be 

homemade and you must call for a signup 

date. Please limit your offerings to 

no more than twice per month to be fair 

to all. Also, if possible, we would love to 

have the recipe. We can’t tell you how 

much joy this brings us even though we 

have to go through withdrawal in July.

DOGS 

We’ve got two and when 

they’re not out finding 

something that stinks, they 

love to greet people. Allie 

is the crazy little black 

dog who seems to love 

everyone. She’s still the comedian and 

still famous for burying empty bottles, 

perching on top of the mulch pile and 

fetching the paper every morning. She’s 

getting pretty gray in the muzzle but has 

decided to let it go natural. No color for 

her. We also have a golden retriever/ 

hound dog mix by the name 

of Daisy. She used to be 

allergic to all food except 

expensive prescription dog 

chow but by some stroke of 

luck she can now eat the regular stuff with 

no problem. She doesn’t see very well 

so she barks at moving shapes, but once 

she realizes you’re not here to do great 

harm, she’s just fine. She is very gentle 

but somewhat leery of strange men. Then 

again, who isn’t. 

Old dogs, like old shoes, are comfortable. 

They might be a bit out of shape and a 

little worn around the edges, but they fit

• All of Alexandria turned out last 

Saturday down at the Grange Hall 

for Jenelda Thurmer’s 100th birthday 

celebration. Mrs.Thurmer’s daughter and 

son-in-law, Wanda and Bubb Hopkinson, 

spared no expense for the party. Forever 

a big <strong>fan</strong> of Tex-Mex music, Mrs. T was 

serenaded by her beloved Señor Moment 

Mariachi Band. The food was catered by 

Hugs and Quiches with strict instructions 

that the dishes contain either chocolate, 

bacon or scotch - preferably all three. 

She received $100 in one dollar bills, 

which she in turn donated, one by one, 

to surprise guest Duane Pipe, one of the 

fine dancers from Chip and Dales, out on 

the highway. When asked what’s different 

today than when she was young, she 

replied, “Dogs. Nowadays these women 

carry their little dogs in their purses. Our 

dogs were big ol’ things and when we 

wanted to take ‘em somewhere, we’d just 

fling ‘em over our shoulder.” She said her 

favorite TV show was “The Price Is Right, 

but not with that goofy new guy they got 

now. I liked it when Mitt Romney was the 

host. Now, who’s got a smoke I can bum?”

SHRUBS,VINES AND TREES 

Shrubbery is a funny sounding word. 

It rhymes with rubbery and blubbery 

but little else, making it a poor topic 

for poetry and songwriting. Foliage on 

shrubbery can be rubbery. It can also be 

papery, leathery, satiny, prickly and scaly. 

Seldom do you see anyone get blubbery 

over shrubbery except when some errant 

driver misses a curve and takes out 

their favorite magnolia. The point of all 

this foolishness is our great selection of 

shrubbery, which comes in all shapes, 

sizes, colors and, textures. We’ve scoured 

the nation to bring you beautiful blooming 

woody plants for all seasons, usual and 

unusual foliage accents, and even those 

cute little miniatures for rock gardens and 

garden railways. 

While we are proud to grow most 

of our herbaceous material here at 

Baker’s Acres, we grow very few of the 

woody plants that we sell. We rely on 

the many excellent nurseries around the 

country. Please call ahead when seeking 

a specific or unusual variety to make sure 

of availability. Often we are able to find 

the plants you are looking for. We offer a 

delivery service for a nominal fee. Please

Dave Morris is a begoniaholic. Dave is

by Baker’s Acres and he is quite fond of 

all things begonia. Dave had moved on to 

another greenhouse operation but he has

THOSE WACKY COLEUS 

Coleus are the Hawaiian shirts of the 

plant world. They are those gaudy little 

plants with the multicolored leaves 

that you remember from visiting your 

grandmother’s house and they seem to 

come in and out of favor. Currently they 

are popular, mostly because they can be 

used just about anywhere and provide an 

anchor of color and/or texture in beds 

and containers. They shine as either the 

stars or the supporting players in garden 

combos. Several years ago they changed 

the name to Solenostemon, but in a 

blatant act of taxonomic defiance, we 

refuse to call them anything but Coleus. 

Our collection of named varieties is far 

beyond the bounds of sanity at about 150, 

give or take 20. The sad thing is, people 

keep bringing us new ones. Even sadder 

is the fact that we keep coming up with 

new ones of our own. Recently, a fun new 

flower brand, Hort Couture, picked eight 

of our varieties to feature in their new line 

of coleus distributed nationally. And if 

ya think that’s somethin’, how about this.

Ray Rogers, ‘Coleus - Rainbow Foliage for 

Containers and Gardens’, available at fine 

bookstores everywhere. We think we’re 

pretty hotsy-totsy now.

fleshy foliage that comes in a variety of

Retired mechanic Herm Niedermeyer has 

pretty much decided that his veterinary 

plastic surgery idea would be impractical, 

so he’s on to the next big thing. One night 

down at The Beer Pressure Tavern, he and 

the boys were arguing about Daylight 

Savings Time. Complaints were flying and 

confusion reigned. That’s when Herm 

thought of Incremental Savings Time. IST 

would be the answer to everyone’s prayers. 

Instead of jumping forward or backward 

an entire hour twice a year, IST would add 

ten minutes each month for six months 

and them subtract ten minutes for each 

remaining month. When Wade brought 

up the fact that this plan could make a 

mess out of scheduling appointments and 

such, Herm countered with, “What’s ten 

minutes here or there?” He’s now busy 

developing a clock that loses ten minutes 

a month for half a year and then gains it 

back. Through all this, his wife Mabel tries 

to maintain some semblance of normalcy.

In the 18 th century, French aristocrats 

wanted to send to the peasants a message 

that said “We have far more land than 

we need and therefore can afford to 

waste some.” So they planted the fields 

surrounding their estates to grass and 

the green grassy manicured lawn we 

know today was born. This no doubt 

helped bring about a little thing called 

the French Revolution. But alas, lawns 

had already caught on as a status symbol. 

Today, Americans yearly spend $30 billion 

and use 270 billion gallons of water to 

maintain 23 million acres of lawn. In 

just one hour a power mower emits as 

much pollution as a car driven 350 miles. 

Lawns use 10 times the chemicals per acre 

as industrial farmland. In addition, the 

average vegetable travels 1500 miles to 

reach the consumer. But by using just a 

quarter acre of your lawn you could grow 

enough food to feed a family of 5 (or even 

your own family). These facts may sound 

depressing but what they tell us is that 

not only are lawns highly inefficient but 

also greatly contribute to the degradation 

of the environment. I say it’s high time 

we stop letting the French tell us what 

to do! They think they’re so great with 

their <strong>fan</strong>cy soft cheeses and socialized 

healthcare. Liberate your lawn! By 

converting even a small part of your lawn 

to a vegetable garden you’re saying, “I 

want my country back….literally! We can 

call them Freedom Fields! So get growing! 

And what lawn you do keep, remember, 

untreated grass clippings make a great

RADIO ADS 

We advertise on 610 WTVN’s “In the Garden with Ron Wilson”, a two-hour call-in 

gardening program that airs Saturdays at 10 am. Ron does a fine job and dispenses 

a great amount of good horticultural advice. Our ads can also be heard at various 

other times on WTVN (AM) and on WLZT 93.3 (FM). We also do some TV spots on 

WCMH NBC4. These ad spots are ‘oddly different’, much like the pair that appears 

in them: Chris Baker as himself and buddy Chris Calvin as ‘Cal, The Voice of Baker’s 

Acres’. The theme song was written and produced by Mr. Baker and performed by his 

musical cronies, aka The Baker’s Acres Orchestra and Chorus. For the sake of their 

professional careers they have asked not to be identified. If you were unfortunate 

enough to hear the theme song previously, it is probably still playing over and over in 

your head until, desperate for relief, you’ve resorted to self-medication. 

WEB SITE & NEWSLETTER 

Many of you web-surfer-type folks have asked if we have a website. As they say in 

technological Internet jargon…yes, we do. The site is basically this catalog minus 

this paragraph. In fact, if you want to download this catalog in PDF form, there is 

a button to click. We will also announce any special events such as sales or garden 

talks. Since we have discontinued mailing catalogs and sale postcards due to the high 

cost of postage, we have started an Email Newsletter, to be sent seven or eight times a 

year to keep you abreast of the latest happenings here at the Acres. To sign up, go to 

the home page and enter your name and email address and then click ‘subscribe’. We 

promise not to share your email addresses with anyone. As you may have suspected, 

the Internet is actually done with magic, for which we rely on our web wizard, Mark

BUS TOURS 

We seem to have become a destination for garden clubs, horticulture classes, Master 

Gardener groups and other various gardening gangs. If your group would like a tour, 

just call us to set up a time (please, no weekends in May). There are several good 

restaurants in nearby Granville if you’re looking to add lunch to the trip. We can 

handle anything from a van full to a busload or two so bring ‘em on. 

THE 10% CARD 

We like to reward our frequent flower buyers. If you’re here a lot, we have a program 

for you. Here’s the deal: you can purchase a 10% off, non-transferable card from 

us for $50. This may be used all of 2012 for any purchase. Simply present it to the 

cashier when checking out. It should be a simple way to save some money if you 

spend a lot of it here at the Acres. 

POTLUCK 

Last year, on our last day open, we held the 7th Annual Baker’s Acres Family 

Reunion. We enjoyed talking to friendly, interesting people and the food was great. 

This year’s Reunion – Sunday, October 7th. Start planning those casseroles now. 

EARTH DAY 

April 22nd is Earth Day and to celebrate this event, every customer will receive a

SUMMER BREAK 

This year, just like we used to many years ago, we are closing the greenhouse for a 

summer break on Monday, July 23rd. We will reopen on Saturday, August 25th. It’s 

always way too hot during this time and we have very few customers, so we decided to 

just shut down and enjoy the summer. When we reopen, we’ll be refreshed, our hair 

will be cut, and we’ll have plenty of great plants for the late summer and fall season. 

OUR GUARANTEE 

In a perfect world everything that you buy here would be …well…perfect, but we all 

know imperfection is part of our normal lives. Around here we strive for perfection, 

but if that less than perfect thing happens, here are our guarantees and conditions. 

• All plants and all hardgoods are guaranteed and may be returned in resaleable 

condition, for store credit, exchange, or cash refund, for up to five days. Resaleable 

condition is defined as growing in the original healthy state, in the original container, 

and with the original tags or packaging. 

• Perennials are guaranteed from time of purchase until October 15th, with receipt, 

for store credit only. Winter wetness is usually the culprit in perennial failure and is 

beyond our control. 

• Outdoor trees and shrubs are guaranteed for one year from time of purchase, with 

receipt, for store credit only. This tree and shrub guarantee may be waived at the time 

of purchase by the customer in exchange for 10% off the purchase price. 

• Any plant that leaves our greenhouse with a disease, insect problem or an incorrect 

tag may be returned with no questions asked. Unconditionally. 

• This guarantee does not cover death or damage caused by Mother Nature such as 

flooding, winds, frost, drought, rabbit and deer browsing, locusts, stampedes, or giant 

armadillos. We reserve the right to void any guarantee due to CUSTOMER NEGLECT 

or ABUSE. How can we logically be held responsible for something over which we 

have no control? Replacement plants are not guaranteed. All sale items are final for 

anything 50 percent off or more and are not guaranteed. 

CUSTOM POTTING 

Dig this! We offer a custom potting service. Here’s the scoop. 

• Bring your own pots and we’ll design your containers for you. 

• Give us about 1 week lead time. 

• Know your light requirements 

• $50 per hour plus the price of the plants. Cost includes soil and labor.

You want organic? We’ve got organic. We now offer organic lawn, flower and 

vegetable fertilizers exclusively. We also offer beneficial ladybugs and praying mantis 

eggs. Special orders are available for the asking. 

HOT DOGS 

The Mr. Footlong Hot Dog cart will be back by popular demand this year. They’ll be 

dishing out the good stuff every Saturday in April and May, depending on the weather. 

These are not organic but who cares. Mmmmm...hot dogs!
