FLORIBUNDA
ROSES
FLORIBUNDA ROSES.
The word Floribunda is derived from a Latin word meaning ‘many flowered’ or
‘abundance of flowers’. These roses are described as one of the most colourful
varieties of the modern roses. Their flowers are generally arranged in large
clusters and do not grow as tall as Hybrid Teas. The breed is a result of cross
breeding a Hybrid Tea and a Polyantha in the 1920’s. It is considered by many
to be better than the Hybrid Tea as it produces many flowers over a large portion
of the year. They are generally grown for display and not used for cut flowers as
the stems are usually shorter than the Hybrid Tea. They produce an abundance
of blooms and colour over many years, and because of this they are considered
the perfect garden plant.
Floribunda Rose. 2006. 3ft-4ft
This rose has very unusual colouring. It has been described
as russet, smoky lavender/orange or red.
Whatever the colour it is quite an interesting rose
from the USA.
Over there it was named 'Cinco de Mayo' and was
voted the All American Selection in 2009.
It produces masses of colourful blooms in large clusters
throughout the season and well into the autumn.
The blooms are pretty weather proof and unaffected
by rain.
Even the foliage is colourful as it starts of red and
changes to semi glossy dark green as it matures.
The foliage is pretty healthy and also disease resistant.
An interesting rose for cutting with a pleasant perfume.
CENTENAIRE DE LOURDES (Delge)
Floribunda Rose. 1958. 3ft
1994.
It is an extremely vigorous and floriferous
cluster flowered rose that has never
received the full recognition it deserves.
It bears large, old fashioned flowers of 15
soft rose petals in clusters that appear in
huge numbers throughout the summer.
EASY DOES IT (Harpageant)
Floribunda Rose. 2008. 3ft-4ft
Although this superb rose was bred in the UK it has really taken
the USA by storm.
Each year they choose a few roses for their All American Rose
Award but in 2010 there was only one winner, so it looks something
special.
Quite big for a floribunda it produces masses of huge intensely
ruffled blooms of mango orange suffusing to pink.
The colour is very difficult to describe but peach, mango, pink
and orange are all there to make quite a confectionary of colours.
It is even difficult to catch the colour on film but the picture featured
is probably the best we can find for the moment.
As you would expect from a rose with such a top award it flowers all season, it is very healthy, plus
the bonus of a lovely perfume.
It looks a sure fire winner in the UK
EDITH HOLDEN (Chewlegacy)
This lovely rose is quite unique in colour; in cool weather the
young flowers are a russet golden brown colour with a yellow centre
borne in long sprays of 10-20,
appearing continuously through the summer and into autumn.
Floribunda. 1975. 2ft-3ft.
Has never been a popular rose which is a great shame, as it is very beautiful and is one of the easiest
of the lilac-pink roses to grow.
The flowers are large and full petalled, often carried 3 to a stem, and open with high centres, becoming
rounded and cupped as the petals reflex.
They have an excellent fragrance and the blooms continue to appear through summer and autumn.
For those who like unusual colours this is a useful rose to grow as a group in a mixed border.
Makes a good cut flower as the blooms last well in water.
Needs a warm spot to produce the best colour.
green leaves.
we have listed it under Floribunda's to save any confusion.
The small exhibition quality blooms are high centred and just like
tiny HT blooms. The colour is red with a yellow flush down to the
bottom of the petals.
through the summer into autumn.
KIM
Floribunda Rose. 1971. 1ft-2ft.
This variety has flowers that are large in proportion to the
plant, having over 30 petals: they open from clusters of plump
buds into rounded flowers of canary yellow and become
cupped as the petals reflex, then admit flushes of pink as they
age, to a marked degree in hot weather.
The blooms are carried quite close to the foliage, giving the
plant a compact appearance, and they repeat their flowers with
good continuity through the summer and autumn.
There is a pleasant light fragrance, and the flowers open
cleanly in all weathers.
'Kim' is good for small spaces of every kind, to edge a bed or in
a container.
The growth is compact and bushy, much shorter than the average bush rose, and the plant is well
provided with small, matt mid-green leaves.
Was given the Royal National Rose Society's , Certificate Of Merit.
