With the arrival of summer and good weather, after so many months of pandemic arises the need to go out and sunbathe in the countryside. Beaches and swimming pools invite us to spend time there. Therefore, it is normal, that questions about sun exposure and its effect on the skin arise.

Every year doctors and professionals in the aesthetic medical sector carry out campaigns aimed at informing people about the risk involved in taking it indiscriminately.  Sunbathing is healthy if done in moderation and with sunscreen appropriate to the type of skin applied. The problem begins if we do it indiscriminately without responsibility. It can become a serious health problem in the long run, with the total certainty of developing skin cancer, a disease that affects 4. 000 people every year in Spain, in the case of melanoma (cancer with the worst prognosis) and more than 74,000 develop non-melanoma skin cancer.

Doctors warn us in turn that it is not only now in spring and summer that we receive solar radiation, but that our skin must be protected throughout the year.

“Undoubtedly in summer we receive more radiation because we are more exposed to the sun, we also wear less clothing, which after all is a protective barrier, but the advice or precautions when taking it should be applied all year round”,

Another issue to keep in mind and that is developing a lot in recent years is a psychiatric disease TANOREXIA, or ‘sun addiction’, is a psychiatric disorder in which there is a pathological and irrational, severe and persistent obsession to be always tanned and that causes a compulsive and unhealthy exposure to sunbathing or UV rays despite being aware of the harmful consequences to health.

Therefore, we can conclude by saying that the sun is beneficial and necessary for our health but if we misuse the sun exposure can become our greatest enemy.

Benefits of sunbathing.

“Without the sun, human beings could not live.”

Among the benefits of sunbathing, it is known that the presence of sunlight is essential not only for life in general but also to absorb greater amounts of calcium and phosphorus in our body and helps in the synthesis of Vitamin D.

Today there is an extraordinary interest in the role that this vitamin can play in various aspects of health since it seems to have a possible protective effect against the appearance of various cancers. In addition, there is evidence that its deficiency may play an important role in the development of other diseases, such as certain types of asthma or rheumatoid arthritis.

It is also very important in the treatment of some dermatological conditions such as psoriasis or vitiligo.

Sunlight has been used to treat skin-related diseases such as psoriasis and vitiligo, laying the therapeutic foundations for phototherapy.

The beneficial effects on the vascular tree (the muscular fibrils responsible for modifying by constriction or relaxation the calibre of the vessels) are also increasingly known for their ability to mobilize nitric oxide in the body, which is an important mediator for relaxing the vascular musculature and, therefore, lowering blood pressure.

And what to say about what it means for our well-being, the sun produces endorphins that predispose us to a good mood, increase sexual desire, reduce depression.

Without the sun, human beings could not live.

How and how long should we sunbathe?

Once we have seen the benefits of sunbathing, we should ask how and how long it is advisable to sunbathe.

The answer to both questions is no less necessary to remember how to do it is to always do it with PHOTO PROTECTION, letting an expert recommend which is the most appropriate depending on each phototype, that is, considering the colour of eyes, skin tone, etc. The ideal is to use very high protection especially for the first sun exposure in any phototype, and then adapt the protection factor and exposure time as we are not tanning, but do not forget that tanning is a system of protection of our skin against solar radiation.

How much sun will also depend on each person? Light-skinned subjects will need much less exposure than dark-skinned ones. Even so, and in a generic way, it could be postulated that with ten minutes a day the correct photosynthesis of vitamin D is guaranteed.

One last point to bear in mind is that the tanning that the skin acquires is the result of the synthesis of melanin that the body spreads as a defence mechanism against radiation. Therefore, the false belief that once the tan is established, the use of protective creams is unnecessary must be dismantled; it is essential to always protect the skin and use after-sun lotions that moisturize and mitigate the possible damage caused.
