Description
Unlike other Cirsiums, this Cirsium lacks spines; can be quite tall.
A plant for damp areas.
Flowers
The flowers are pinkish-purple.
Leaves
Hastate spear-shaped leaf with horizontal lobes at base. Spear-shaped with prickly but soft margins, directed upwards, 20-40 cm long, 4-8 cm wide.
Fruits Seeds
Achene: a cluster of small, 1-seeded fruit with feathery, fine hairs.
Medical
Reputed to have cured sadness. Nicholas Culpepper quoted: ‘makes a man as merry as a cricket’.
