Original Shepard Fairey Obama HOPE Artwork Sells for $735,000
1 year ago
The portrait was based on another emblematic snap of Obama by Mannie Garcia.

The emblematic portrait of Barack Obama by Shepard Fairey - you know, the one with the all-too famous "Hope" words underneath, fetches a price of $735,000 at Expo Chicago by Heritage Auctions Friday, May 20th. The original portrait came about in 2008 and was the artist’s contribution to the then-senator’s campaign for the then-future-president.

The auctioned portrait is only one of 3 such images done by Fairey. It is based on another image, shot by the Associated Press photographer Mannie Garcia, in which the senator Barack Obama shares frame with actor George Clooney at a National Press Club discussion. Fairey’s creation has since been recreated one too many times. Even Fairey himself almost got into trouble for using Garcia’s image, but the misunderstanding was quickly sorted out. The total sum fetched on Expo Chicago by Heritage Auctions Friday sale was almost $3m.
