As a member of the 2000s girl pop group, the Sugababes, Keisha Buchanan had many changing looks and fashionable moments. From red carpet appearances to music videos, she always knew how to inspire young girls and women around the globe, including me. Still a favorite on my music playlist and fashion radar, I was curious to learn more about Keisha’s cherished style memories. So, I checked in with the MKS singer, who reminisces on the TV sitcom Moesha, stage outfits and movie premieres.

On her earliest fashion memory…

“One of my earliest fashion memories is of when I was around 3 years old. My mum took a photograph of my older brother and me at play school and I remember asking if I could wear his Mickey Mouse jumper. I remember my mum laughing and trying to explain to me that it was too big for me, but in my head I had a vision that I wanted to wear a top knot in my hair, an oversized jumper with black tights and ankle boots. Thankfully, she gave in and allowed me to wear it!”

On her childhood and teenage style influences…

“Growing up, I was obsessed with Urban 90s fashion. I loved wearing my hair in super long ‘box’ braids like the American singer Brandy and I would use hair gel to create wavy patterns with my baby hairs. I sometimes wore my hair in cornrows and would team-up the look with crop tops and baggy jeans. I became obsessed with Brandy’s style, and of course her vocals, and used to love watching her play the character, Moesha, from the hit TV sitcom of the same name.

I would try to imitate most of her looks, such as high pony tail braids, braids with highlights, braids in a bob – you name it! I love how this style has come back around in such a major way.”

On her most memorable Sugababes performance and what she was wearing…

“One of my most memorable performances during my Sugababes era was in Brazil at Rock in Rio in 2004. We were headline performers and it was incredible, as there were over 250,000 people in the audience and one of the biggest shows we did as a group. I wore a yellow and black custom Adidas off the shoulder jumpsuit, which I loved.”

On her most outstanding stage outfit…

“I love performing at the infamous G.A.Y music venue in London. It is a place where you can go as crazy as you want with your style. And my favorite outfit has got to be this incredible latex jumpsuit created by Atsuko Kudo. I was boiling hot and it took three people to get me out of it once I came off stage, but I felt fierce!”

On her most memorable red carpet moments and current style…

“For me, one of my stand-out red carpet moments was in 2009 at the Michael Jackson This is it film premiere, where I wore a beautiful David Koma studded dress. In 2011 I was invited to an event that the Dolce & Gabbana designers hosted in London. I jumped at the chance when I was asked to wear a look from their new collection and chose this cute red leopard-print dress with a black corset top. I was so used to wearing black clothes 90 percent of the time, so this was a nice change for me. Today, I love blending high-street brands and designer clothes together. My favorites are Topshop and Alexander Wang and my style inspirations are Rihanna and Khloé Kardashian!”
