PUNICA granatum Rubra Plena

Description

Fabulous variety of Punica granatum, of which it has most of the characteristics. Small deciduous tree or shrub, slow growing and with an expanding-globose habit, native to western Asia and belonging to the Punicaceae family, it can reach and exceed the height of 3 meters and a width when fully developed, slightly less. Woody and strongly branched from the base in the shrubby form, it has small ovate-lanceolate leaves of a beautiful bright green, which turns to the golden yellow of the autumn foliage, before the fall. Between late spring and summer, from the large spherical orange buds arranged at the apex of the branches, numerous large tubular flowers with several petals open, of a beautiful fiery red-orange that are not able to bear fruit.

Suggestions

Lover of sunny positions, it adapts to any type of soil but likes medium-fertile and above all well-drained ones. It is resistant to periods of intense and prolonged cold, as well as to dry seasons and only occasional summer wetting can prove useful for a better development of the plant and a more lasting flowering. Tolerant of brackish winds, it adapts to growth even in coastal gardens. Before the vegetative restart in spring, it may appreciate pruning interventions aimed at eliminating dry or broken branches, but also, shortening and thinning the foliage, to guarantee a better and more regular development. Its cultivation in large containers in terraces and vases is possible, but the best successes are obtained from planting in the ground, both alone and together with other essences with a Mediterranean flavor, where, in the face of a reduced, almost no maintenance, gives captivating chromatic effects all year round; even in winter, when it is bare, the bark of its trunk and branches can be appreciated, wrinkled and silvery.
