The upcoming Sopranos prequel film just cast its most important role: Michael Gandolfini, son of the late Sopranos star James Gandolfini, will take over his father’s role as a young Tony Soprano.

As Gandolfini told Variety, “It’s a profound honor to continue my dad’s legacy while stepping into the shoes of a young Tony Soprano. I’m thrilled that I am going to have the opportunity to work with [Sopranos creator] David Chase and the incredible company of talent he has assembled for The Many Saints of Newark.

Gandolfini’s announcement comes just one week after Jon Bernthal and Vera Farmiga joined the cast in unspecified roles. The film will take place during the Newark race riots of the 1960s, and will star Alessandro Nivola as Dickey Moltisanti, a character who was mentioned in but never appeared on the original HBO series because he had died before the events of the show began. Also cast last week? Corey Stoll and Billy Magnussen, whose roles have yet to be revealed as well. Alan Taylor will direct the film, which was co-written by Chase and producer Lawrence Konner.

The new film is expected to include original Sopranos characters in addition to Dickey and Tony, but it’s unknown for now who they might be or who might play them. But regardless, all eyes will likely be on Gandolfini, and his take on the character that won his father a Golden Globe and three Emmy awards. Given that the actor has already appeared as Joey Dwyer in HBO’s The Deuce, the premium cabler at least seems to have reason for its vote of confidence.
