'Dukes of Hazzard' car with Confederate flag comes to auction

One of the many old Dodge Chargers that played a screen role as the "General Lee," the car that starred on the 1970s-era TV show The Dukes of Hazzard, is coming up for auction.

There were so many of the cars, in fact, that one coming to auction might not seem like that unusual of an event. But unlike in the past, the focus now may be on what's on the rooftop.

It's the Confederate flag. Now that the flag is disappearing fast because of concerns about it being a symbol of racism, potential bidders may view the car in a new light. Now the General Lee, even though it's a piece of TV history, is controversial.

More than 300 of the General Lee cars were used for the series, and most were destroyed in chase and crash scenes, according to the auction house, Profiles in History. Crews had to scour the country trying to find old Chargers that could be used -- and destroyed -- for the show.

The auction house says it believes this 1969 Charger is now only one of three General Lees that survive -- and it has both the title and a letter from Warner Bros. that speak to its authenticity. It is expected to fetch more than $100,000 when it comes to auction from Sept. 30 to Oct. 1.

The car is street legal and is in driving condition, but the buyer may want to be careful given the questionable flag on its roof.
