Jenny McCarthy: I was told to 'act Republican' on 'The View'

Jenny McCarthy does not remember all of her time on the daytime talk show "The View" particularly fondly.

McCarthy appeared on Bravo's "Watch What Happens Live" on Tuesday, and reminisced about some strange instructions Barbara Walters once gave her when she served on the panel between 2013 and 2014. 

"They initially had me come on to be the pop-culture girl because they wanted to change it," McCarthy told "WWHL" host Andy Cohen. "And then Barbara didn’t know who anybody was, pop culture-wise. And then they came in my dressing room and said, ‘Can you just act Republican so we have another point of view?' And I said, ‘How do I act Republican?’

McCarthy went on to compliment Meghan McCain, who currently appears on the show and does, in fact, represent conservative opinions.

“I love her on ‘The View,'" she said. "They needed an opposite point of view – in order to be ‘The View’ you need different sides."

McCarthy took many outspoken stances in her time on "The View," particularly with her claims that vaccines cause autism. 

"Jenny brings us intelligence as well as warmth and humor," Walters said in 2013 before McCarthy joined the show. "She can be serious and outrageous. She has connected with our audience and offers a fresh point of view. Jenny will be a great addition to the show as we usher in an exciting new chapter for 'The View.''
