Midsummer: the perfect time to refresh your garden

The solstice is a chance to rejuvenate and reawaken your plants

Monday is the solstice, the high point of summer, when the sun is at its most northerly point in the sky and gardens bathe in 16 hours and 38 minutes of daylight. From here the sun moves south but rather than dwell on the days getting shorter, think of this celestial occasion as a half-time whistle. A window of opportunity to put life into the legs of tired pots, plots and borders and make a few flowery substitutions. The second period of the growing season hasn’t yet begun and there’s much to play for. If you think it’s all over, read on. It’s not. And won’t be for months.

Don’t spare the secateurs
Gardening in early June is easy, even the weeds look good! But
