They might have had a particular heyday in the 1970s, but heathers are still hugely popular, particularly when used as bedding-in pots. They are just so darned cute when they’re little. So how do you keep them looking perfect?

You might be aware that heathers need an acid soil, and if you’ve tramped across a boggy heather moor you could see why. Actually, some are happy on neutral or even slightly limy soil. As a gross simplification you could say that summer-flowering heathers (the purple Calluna vulgaris of grouse moors) like acid soil, while the winter heathers (such as Erica carnea) accept a touch of lime. The label will tell you which one you’re buying. It does matter, but it’s not the be-all and
