Commonly known as Toe Toe, this NZ native is a large and vigorous grass. It bears long and narrow, mid-green leaves which are held with a gentle arch. Stems rise above the foliage during summer and autumn to bear large and feathery, flower plumes. The herbaceous perennial typically grows to 1.5 m tall and 2 m wide, growing best when planted in full sun or partial shade. It is tolerant of wet and heavy soils, wind, frost, cool climates, coastal conditions, and prolonged periods of dry. Toe Toe is commonly used for stabilising soils, riparian plantings, and revegetation projects but also suits being planted for shelter, screening, or as a habitat for wildlife.
