Go behind the scenes of the closed Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk V&A exhibition

With the ability to spend an afternoon pensively wandering through the latest exhibitions on pause until at least July 4th, big names in the museum world have been forced to adapt to the issues of not being able to open to the public.

Under the extraordinary circumstances that public venues currently find themselves in, the V&A have released a series of digital offerings from their latest exhibition. This includes five films and an in-depth virtual tour, allowing would-be museum attendees to go through the Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk exhibition.

Curator, Anna  Jackson, guides online spectators through the exhibition, giving her personal insight, and valuable knowledge of the history of the iconic garment, as well as the creation of the exhibition, and its star pieces. Arguably one of the most symbolic emblems of Japanese culture, this is the first exhibition devoted to the Kimono in Europe, ever.

Are digital exhibitions the future? Virtual tours have been around for a while but interest in visiting heritage sites and museums online appears to have gained momentum during lockdown and with travel restrictions still in place it appears as though this might continue for the near future. The V&A has shared many of its famed exhibitions, completely free of charge, virtually - during the pandemic.
