Stockholm's Storkyrkan to go pink after original colour found
The façade of Stockholm's Church of St. Nicholas, commonly known as Storkyrkan, is fading and will get a colourful renovation.
The church, located in the Swedish capital’s Gamla Stan (Old Town), is to regain its original colour: pink.
Meanwhile, the steeple is to change colour from its current distressed copper green to dark red, Dagens Nyheter and SVT report.
Over the last 2-3 years, up to three tonnes of plaster have been removed from the façade in areas where it has come loose.
The church’s dean, Hans Ulfvebrand, has said during renovation works that the nationally famous building looks like "a spotted panther."
Internal renovations took place just over 10 years ago and were completed in time for the wedding of Crown Princess and Daniel Westling in June 2010.
Renovation of the outside of the church is a large operation and has been split into several parts. In addition to the roof being replaced, the tower must be redecorated, the facade repainted and damaged stone repaired or replaced.
Details of the façade décor that disappeared during a major renovation in the early 1900s will re-emerge as part of the work.
The most noticeable change will be the colour of the church, which will take on a more pink tone, while the steeple will become copper red.
The original colour of the church was discovered by examining wall fragments and by studying archives, according to the report.
"Our architectural curator has done a thorough analysis of the structure of the old colour and went through shopping lists from the 18th century," SVT quotes Hans Carnmarker, property manager with the cathedral parish.
The renovation will start in spring next year and is expected to cost up to 70 million kronor.
