What is a palm reading?

A palm reading is exactly what it sounds like - it is the study of one's palm, looked at to determine their past, present, and future.

Another name for the act is chiromancy, and those who practice palm reading are palmists, hand readers, fortune tellers, or chirologists.

Various religions and cultures worldwide find the use of chiromancy a common practice.

Through one's palm, chirologists are said to have the ability to discern the life path and distinctive characteristics of the person being read.

Within the palm is believed to be a Fate Line, a Head Line, a Life Line, a Heart Line, a Mercury Line, and the Girdle of Venus.

What does each of the lines represent?

In palmistry, it is believed for males that the left hand represents what traits you are born with, while the right hand represents the traits you have accumulated throughout life.

In females, this belief rings true for opposite hands.

One's dominant hand is said to determine their future, while their non-dominant hand can aid in learning more about their past.

The various lines found on one's palm can help determine their fate:

  • Heart Line is said to determine emotional states and romantic prospects along with cardiac health
  • Head Line is said to represent learning and communication styles
  • Fate Line is said to dictate the external circumstances of one's life
  • Life Line is said to reflect one's overall well-being and any significant life changes
  • Mercury Line is said to indicate where one should practice business and their relationship with finances

A Girdle of Venus is said to represent insecurity and nervousness.

What is the history of palmistry?

Although practiced worldwide, palmistry is firmly rooted in Hindu astrology, along with Chinese and Roma divination.

Valmiki, a Hindu sage and poet, is believed to have written a book describing the art of palmistry thousands of years ago.

The practice quickly spread throughout the East, finding a home in many Asian cultures.

The ancient Greek philosopher, Anaxagoras, reportedly learned chiromancy himself and helped bring the art to Europe.

In the Catholic church, palmistry has seen various bans and proclamations against the practice over the years.

During the 1500s, Popes Paul IV and Sixtus V issued papal edicts knocking multiple forms of divination, including palmistry itself.
