Sol Beach House Ibiza

Jutting out into the Mediterranean on Ibiza's east coast, Sol Beach House has stunning views out to sea, particularly first thing in the morning when the sun is rising over the horizon. There's no beach but there are rocks to leap off, and it's only a 10-minute stroll to the pretty marina in Santa Eulalia. Follow the coast-hugging promenade to reach the centre of town where you'll find a big enough selection of shops and restaurants to while away several afternoons. Ibiza town is a 20-minute drive away, and allow at least half an hour to reach the airport – traffic on the main road is often at a standstill.  

Bright, spacious and airy, the hotel's primary colour scheme is white with accents of Balearic blue, which come courtesy of design partners, Desigual Living. Communal areas are charming in a sort of shabby chic, boho way – life mottos like 'you are the sunshine' and 'let's dance' are hung in corridors, and brightly-coloured cushions are strewn all around – but after initial reluctance you warm to it, and those who don't just make a beeline for outside. There are countless al fresco spaces to take advantage of and plenty of hammocks, loungers, daybeds and deckchairs to choose from, but competition is rife so it's a matter of selecting your weapon of choice and sticking with it.  

There is a huge amount of facilities here, which is great for keeping a lazy holiday schedule fresh. The most recent addition is a fabulous rooftop infinity pool and bar (though access to this is limited), but there are two other sea-facing pools, as well as a gym, a juice bar, a chiringuito, a restaurant, complementary bike hire, yoga and Pilates classes, and a massage area. Staff members are busy but friendly, and provide nice little touches like free flip flops on arrival, and at night, turned down sheets. Pets are allowed.

After a recent extension to the hotel there are 277 rooms and suites and most have balconies or terraces and sea views. They all have neutral walls, sand-coloured floors and simple furniture; newly-built rooms are particularly sleek and modern with mirrors placed cleverly to reflect the shimmer of the sea. Bathrooms have walk-in, rain-head showers and in Extra category rooms you're given kits of varying kinds to suit every possible grooming need.

Breakfast is included and truthfully, the amount of options available is almost overwhelming. The selection includes fruit, fry-ups, a fresh bakery stand, yoghurt, pancakes, tortilla, a variety of meats and cheese, and lo, a self-explanatory coffee machine that actually gives you what you ask for. A rarity indeed. A range of nibbles are served at the chiringuito during the day, fresh juices are whipped up at the on-site juice bar, and dinner can be taken at the new rooftop bar. In the main restaurant there's a wide variety of options available – including vegetarian – and you can sit inside or on the outside terrace facing the sea.
