Chillout Hotel Tres Mares

Chillout Hotel Tres Mares is set in sheltered grounds across the N-340 from the elemental, unspoiled beaches of the Costa de La Luz. The hotel is a 10-minute drive from Tarifa, the ‘kite-surfing capital’ at Europe’s southern tip.

Surrounded by forested mountains with hiking and bike trails, the entire coast is an outdoor and watersports enthusiasts’ paradise. Bolonia, a fishing village with spectacular dunes and Roman ruins, is an 18-minute drive away. Tangier can be reached in around 40 minutes via fast ferry from Tarifa.  

Refined indoor and outdoor spaces have been created with chilling out in mind. Four-poster day beds, padded loungers and hanging chairs are positioned throughout the gardens. The luscious foliage and greenery is particularly welcome in summer when the surrounding landscapes are dry.

Wooden furnishings and sculptures with a Balinese/Indonesian feel feature throughout. The main building is spread over two levels, and the interior is tasteful and calming. The only downside is the hum of passing traffic, which you can sometimes hear.

Service is warm and attentive. In the garden, there’s a Moroccan-inspired restaurant and an outdoor pool, which is overlooked by a Buddha statue. In the main building, a roof-top terrace has views of Punta Paloma Beach, the ocean and Africa; the hot-tub should not be missed, especially at sunset.

There is on-site parking, and guests can make use of the tennis and gym facilities at nearby Hotel Dos Mares, the Tres Mares’ sister hotel. Tres Mares is a romantic and popular wedding venue, and the staff offer event planning assistance.

The 24 stylish, double rooms open onto the patio or upper-floor veranda, both of which are furnished with laid-back seating areas. Décor is simple and sophisticated, with a palette of neutral, earthy tones and natural materials, such as bamboo. Rooms are compact, but offer a sleek space for cooling down after a day at the beach or by the pool.

Bathrooms are bright and modern, and include showers. Beds are comfortable, and all rooms have Wi-Fi, televisions, temperature control and hairdryers. Blackout curtains are a thoughtful touch.

Food is served in the garden restaurant. You can eat on the poolside terrace or inside, where sumptuous fabrics, Moroccan lamps and wooden carvings abound. At night, the garden is beautifully lit, and the atmosphere is cosy and enchanting, making dining here a delight.

Dishes are fresh, colourful and delicious. The evening menu is Arabic-influenced, and includes Falafel, Börek and Tagine, as well as local seafood. Service is friendly and professional, and the menu is excellent value for money. By day, fresh salads, simple meals and cocktails are served, and the breakfast buffet includes breads, fresh fruit, juice and coffee.
