IBEROSTAR Royal Andalus stands on La Barrosa Beach, 14 minutes' drive from Chiclana de la Frontera. The surrounding area, Novo Sancti Petri, is known for its numerous hotels and resorts. However, the coastline here has a more unspoilt feel than in some other parts of Spain.

If you can tear yourself away from the hotel, a handy shuttle bus runs to and from Chiclana. Cádiz – for museums, galleries and traditional restaurants – is under 40 minutes' drive away and it's 45 minutes to Jerez Airport. Jerez city, famed for its sherry cellars, makes for a good day trip.

Built in 1991, the low-rise building is laid out in a 'W' shape around two large pools. With its crisp lines, white walls and balconies, the Royal Andalus is reminiscent of a giant cruise ship in both look and atmosphere – all you need to worry about is what to eat or drink next.

This destination is all about sun, sea and fun, and the layout is designed to maximise all three. There is direct access to the beach and outdoor spaces feature pools, loungers, terraces and palm trees. The focus is on families, and child-friendly features include play areas, and a pool with a three-headed dragon and Viking galley. Indoors, the nature-inspired open lobby features hanging gardens.

You could haul up here for weeks and never step outside. Staff are friendly and ever present, and facilities include a gym, a beauty salon and a lobby lounge with a ginormous television. SPA Sensations, with its Turkish bath, sauna and pool, is the go-to spot for indulgent me-time. Car and bike hire, activities and tours can be arranged.

Sports include golf, tennis and paddle, and in summer, three children's activities clubs cater for different ages. As the sun starts to set, the entertainment kicks off. A mini disco is followed by cabaret-style singing, magic acts and dance.

The hotel has 413 rooms, composed of doubles, triples, family rooms, junior suites and suites. The rooms are light and airy, and feature balconies with pool, golf course and/or sea views. The style is contemporary with white walls and sleek furnishings.

All rooms offer air-conditioning, hairdryers, minibars, televisions and safes, and sparkling bathrooms have tubs. Spacious suites include extras such as living areas, whirlpool baths and Nespresso machines.

Leisurely days revolve around meal times. There are four restaurants, a lobby bar, a pool bar and a seasonal beach bar. The most popular dining spot is the Al-Andalus Restaurant, where a sumptuous buffet of Spanish and international cuisine makes your mouth water. Themed serving stations are over-flowing with fresh seafood, meat and egg dishes, cheeses, pasta, pizza, soups, fruits, deserts – the list goes on and on. Other dining options include the Grill Alameda and Monolete Restaurant for à la carte Andalusian specialties.

Breakfast is equally lavish, with continental offerings, hot options and cold cuts, and can be washed down with a glass of cava.
