db San Antonio Hotel + Spa

St. Paul's Bay, Malta

A large all-inclusive resort hotel that is a cut above its neighbours in Malta’s main tourist area, on the edge of a sparkling blue Mediterranean bay.

Location

6 / 10

In a built-up area known for package holiday tourism, the San Antonio is almost opposite Malta’s contemporary National Aquarium and one of the island’s trendiest clubs, Café Del Mar: beach club (with gorgeous sea-side infinity pool) by day, party central by night. The hotel is round the corner from the seafront, with plenty of bars, pubs and restaurants as well as a casino in walking distance. The local bus station is less than five minutes’ away and there is free parking on the street or hotel parking available at a charge.

Style and Character

7 / 10

The San Antonio is fresh and contemporary with a touch of the Moorish. Through a domed entranceway of stained glass, an airy foyer with polished floors and broad modern columns is lit with giant Eastern-style geometrically patterned lanterns. Glass walls look onto the hotel’s terraces.

Service and Facilities

7 / 10

Facilities are excellent, with four outdoor pools: one large and landscaped with bridges, an adults-only rooftop infinity pool, a children’s pool and kids’ fun pool complete with pirate ship and slide. Regular daytime and evening entertainment ranges from exercise classes to shows. A well-equipped gym stands next to the smart and welcoming spa, with candlelit hammam, sauna, steam room and treatment area, as well as an indoor pool and whirlpool tub.

Just across the road is a narrow beach of artificial sand shared with the hotel next door. Umbrellas, sunbeds and a kiosk are provided. Reception can get busy and, though considerably better than most, this is a mass-market hotel not designed to be especially personal.

The 500 rooms are decorated in vibrant Mediterranean colours, turquoise and greens on a white background, with the Moorish touch in the form of cushions and ceramics. Rooms are modern, clean and bright with an open clothes rail, televsion, mini-fridge (minibar contents cost extra) and tea- and coffee-making facilities. All rooms have a balcony.

Food and Drink

7 / 10

The hotel is entirely all-inclusive and guests can choose from five restaurants. All food is prepped and cooked on-site and there is plenty of variety. Four buffet restaurants offer cuisines including Asian, Chinese, Moroccan, Indian, traditional Maltese and a large breakfast spread. The fifth restaurant is the Bistro, which is à la carte. There is also an included café offering ice cream and snacks, and drinks (local and international soft drinks and house alcohols) are available all day.
