San Luis

Merano, South Tyrol, Italy

A hotel for those looking for nothing but luxury and privacy: 42 private chalets nestled among the trees, a frozen lake for skating under the starry sky, crackling fireplaces, magical winter landscapes, a dreamy pool and a perfect welcome. A spectacular mountaintop retreat.

Location

9 / 10

San Luis is a place of solitude and quiet in the middle of the Italian Alps – there are almost no other properties in the area, so guests are guaranteed privacy and an escape from the daily routine. The retreat stretches over 40 acres of private forests and fields. The nearest ski slopes are only 20 minutes drive away, likewise the city of Merano, but the truth is that those who come here come to stay.

Style and Character

9 / 10

The San Luis has taken a modern approach to classic Alpine style. There’s that all-important hygge factor but with a twist. Industrial light fittings, wrought-iron tables and charcoal-coloured feature walls create drama while the timber furnishings add warmth and cosiness. The lighting is low and atmospheric. San Luis is a retreat and, accordingly, the emphasis is on slowing down. Visitors are encouraged to put down the mobile phone and pick any one of the many beautiful books scattered around dedicated to nature, art, design and food.

Service and Facilities

8 / 10

Upon arrival guests immediately sense the generations of hotelier experience behind the creation of San Luis. Reception and room staff offer friendly, elegant and efficient service that is discreet and always ready. San Luis’ greatest asset is arguably nature itself and the hotel’s range of facilities is designed to take best advantage. Breathtaking views come standard whether guests are enjoying a massage, working out in the gym, relaxing in the sauna, whirlpool tub or heated indoor/outdoor pool, walking or bike-riding the woodland paths, ice skating on the lake or simply lounging fireside with a drink.

Rooms

8 / 10

Each of the 42 chalets is unique, some are by the lake while others climb up into the trees. All have a terrace with chairs and most have outdoor whirlpool tub and private sauna. Inside, the rooms are luxurious but simple, constructed from recycled timber and dark stone, and furnished in warm tones of cream and beige. Generously proportioned and thoughtfully designed, the suite has sliding panel doors to divide the kitchen and dining zones from the living and bedroom. Coffee machine and induction stovetop with kitchen essentials make it feel like home while the luxurious open bath, central fireplace with cosy sofas and the private sauna remind guests that they are being pampered.

Food and Drink

7 / 10

Breakfast is served directly in each chalet every morning from 8am to 11am. Guests order the day before, choosing from a range of local specialties including fresh sourdough bread, cold cuts, cheeses, fruit, yogurt, and freshly made juices. Eggs are delivered for you to cook to suit your own taste.

Lunch and dinner are served every day in a restaurant which overlooks the lake. Light lunches consist of soups, salads and antipasto plates. Dinner is a substantial offering of daily specials and a weekly à la carte menu. The food is guaranteed to please most tastes, with everything from traditional Austrian sausages to seafood risotto. The bar is well-stocked and also well-staffed with a knowledgeable and friendly barman. Room service is available and offers hot and cold starters, soups and one or two main courses.

Value for Money

7 / 10

Double rooms from €305 (£261) in low season; and from €360 (£308) in high. Breakfast and dinner included. Three-night minimum stay. Free Wi-Fi.
