Albergo

Despite periodic times of strife in the region, Beirut has an eternally irresistible appeal for travellers: the country’s endless stock of ancient ruins, the city’s innovative gallery scene, the Lebanese tradition of hospitality... During phases when some foreigners heeded the call to stay away, one felt as if one had the Albergo, a beautifully restored apartment block in east Beirut, almost entirely to oneself. And it is heaven: the breezy high-ceilinged rooms, arabesque tiling, a charming elevator that shudders its way up to a rooftop terrace where they serve the best Lebanese breakfast in the city (labneh with za’atar, honey and olives). Visitors to Lebanon find a city flush with restaurants and life. These days the Albergo seems perennially booked-out, and rightly so. Ask any Beirut resident where to stay and the hotel is invariably their first answer; their recommendation reinforces the success of a tasteful touch-up. On a recent visit, alluring young things flitted around the new rooftop pool, the late summer night buzzing around them. Today the Lebanese are cognisant of the glories their country offers. Who wouldn’t want to come here?
