WELSH athletics star Christian Malcolm tied the knot with his long term girlfriend Carly Isaacs in a beautiful ceremony at Clearwell Castle in the Forest of Dean on Sunday.

The double World Championships and Commonwealth Games medal winner married 33-year-old Carly Isaacs at the sumptuous 18th century castle.

Ninety relatives and friends attended the civil ceremony held at the 1727 castle featuring 15 bedrooms and a magnificent ballroom.

The Newport couple met in Cardiff in their teens and have two daughters Seanna, eight, and 13-week-old Bella-Rose.

Christian, 35, said: “It was an amazing day.

“To have family and close friends like that, it’s really special. I’ve always been a home boy. I got to see everybody under one roof.

“Carly was amazingly beautiful. She looked like a princess. She took their breath away.”

The couple are relaxing at home with their young children and are planning to go on a honeymoon this summer.

Award-winning photographer Nick Murray took memorable shots of the couple at the Grade II* listed castle previously used as studios by bands including Led Zeppelin.

The Rogerstone photographer said: “It was one of the most beautiful weddings I have done.

“The guests were so friendly. It was just like one big family. It was a really nice day.”

Christian, a former Eveswell Primary School and Hartridge High School pupil, burst onto the global scene by winning 100m and 200m gold at the World Junior Championships in 1998 aged 19.

That same year he won a silver medal in the 200m at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpar and was hailed as the next big superstar of British athletics.

But injuries and illness meant that he did not win another individual outdoor medal until he was 31.

Malcolm won European Championships silver and Commonwealth bronze in the 200m in 2010.

He finished a creditable fifth in the 200m final at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and in Beijing in 2008.

Christian called time on his athletics career last summer but is now harbouring plans to open an academy to coach the sporting stars of tomorrow.

Meanwhile, his wife Carly works as a social worker for the UK children’s charity Action for Children in Newport.

Christian added: “Being retired, it is a new chapter in my life now.

“When I competed I was always away. I’m home now.”
