The long-awaited newest entry, the NESTS Saga, begins.
K', KOF's newest hero, rises from the flames.
With its overhaul of the KOF '98 game system, KOF '99 boasts new elements such as the Striker Match and the Counter Mode. It also begins the powerful story of the NESTS Saga and changes history by shifting the main character from Kyo Kusanagi to K'.

STORY OF KOF '99
'You are cordially invited to this year's King of Fighters.'
Once again, invitations for the King of Fighters make their way to fighters all over the world.
Yet the buzz and bustle from previous years has died down, and the entrants are dubious at best.
To top it off, the invitation includes a surprising new rule.
'This tournament will feature a Striker Match format.'
"...Striker Match?"
The fighters find themselves utterly bewildered at this turn of events.
Heidern, sensing something foul behind the scenes, dispatches his mercenaries to investigate the truth.
Benimaru Nikaido receives an invitation to KOF as part of a special team consisting of other carefully selected fighters. The only details he is given are their names: K´ and Maxima. Benimaru is confused, having never heard these names before—anywhere—in the fighting world.
And so Benimaru heads to the tournament venue, as do the other entrants, with questions unanswered.
What are these so-called Striker Matches? What lurks in the shadows of this year's tournament?
Amid this myriad of mysteries, the next King of Fighters is ready to begin!
