Why choose Les Gets ski resort?

Les Gets is an attractive ski resort on the western edge of Les Portes du Soleil ski area in France. The ski region, which covers 12 winter destinations in both France and Switzerland, is one of the largest in the world and Les Gets offer an accessible route into the French side of the area.

Unlike many French ski resorts, Les Gets has the atmosphere of a true mountain chalet village surrounded by snow and ski trails. The skiing is particularly attractive for beginners and intermediates, who can enjoy the facilities but only pay for a local ski pass covering the area above Les Gets and the nearby town of Morzine.

Where is Les Gets?

Les Gets is in the Haute Savoie region of France to the south of Lac Leman and on the main access route into the Portes du Soleil ski area from the French side. It is close to both the international airport just outside Geneva and within half an hour’s dive of the French motorway network.

Les Gets altitude

The village lies on a mountain pass at an altitude of 1127 metres and offers access to skiing on both sides of the valley. Although the village and, indeed, the skiing are not particularly high, the area receives quite heavy snowfall due to its position on the western edge of the Chablais massif.

Where is the closest airport to Les Gets?

Geneva Airport is the nearest international airport if flying to France for a ski holiday. It is around 80 kilometres away and around 80 minutes’ drive away from the ski resort. As well as being the most convenient airport, Geneva also offers the widest choice of destinations and airlines. The airports at Lyon and Chambéry are alternatives but poor ones when compared to what Geneva Airport has to offer.

How to get to Les Gets by train

The closest railway station to Les Gets is at Cluses, which is around 20 kilometres away and connected to Les Gets by public bus service and taxis.

How to get to Les Gets by car

The nearest motorway connection is also at the town of Cluses. Here the motorway junction provides easy access through to Geneva, for those travelling to the airport or further into Switzerland, or to the rest of France via the French motorway network.

The village of Les Gets is spread out along the road over the col, with ski lifts accessing the slopes on both sides of the valley. It is an attractive village which has largely been left to its traditional mountain style and with building restrictions in place to stop the kind of concrete monstrosities which have disfigured other French ski resorts.

Les Gets ski area

Skiers and snowboarders in Les Gets first have to make a decision about which ski pass to choose.

The ski resort offers a special pass aimed at the beginner skier: the Petite Glisse pass, which covers 12 lifts and 13 slopes mainly in the Les Chavannes area and including the easy Orchis red piste.

The next best option for those who do not think that they will be venturing too far from the slopes above the village is the Les Gets Morzine ski pass.

This pass includes all the ski lifts above Les Gets and the connections over to neighbouring Morzine. It includes 48 lifts and 71 trails and offers more than enough scope for the basic intermediate skier. It is also substantially cheaper than the full Portes du Soleil ski pass.

This full pass includes all 12 of the ski areas in both France and Switzerland and allows visitors to Les Gets to head over to Avoriaz and Châtel or even, if they are strong and fast skiers, over the border towards Les Crosets and other Swiss resorts.

Both passes are cheaper if purchased online in advance rather than at a ticket office in resort.

The ski area immediately above Les Gets can be split into two – one on each side of the valley. The smaller of the two consists of ski trails off Mont Chéry, reached from the village by the Mont Chery gondola. This side of the valley is a favourite of locals, as it tends to be less busy than the skiing on the Les Gets-Morzine connection and is a good place to find fresh tracks after a dump of snow.

As well as relatively easy red runs, the Mont Chery side offers a number of black slopes suitable for the more experienced skiers, especially on the back side of the mountain.

Back down in the village, the popular Les Chavannes area on the other side of the valley can be reached by gondola or by the express chairlift which goes all the way to the top of the ridge and the connecting runs through to the Nyon area above Morzine.

This is a popular area for ski school classes and for improving skiers, with plenty of flattering blue and green runs around the mid-station (which is where the gondola finishes).

To the right and higher than the main beginners’ area is the collection of ski lifts and runs known as ‘the Bowl’ underneath the high points of Le Ranfoilly and La Rosta. The runs here are perfect for intermediate skiers, who can head from the top of La Rosta all the way down to the base of the La Turche lifts in good conditions.

Alternatively, heading to the left from the main Chavannes area will take the skier or snowboarder across to the chairlift which links to the ridge immediately above the town of Morzine. From here there is wide choice of ski runs down to the town and the transport options up towards the skiing around Avoriaz.

A final area, the highest in the Les Gets-Morzine ski region, can be reached either off the ridge on the left of Le Ranfoilly looking up or over the ridge from the top of the Chavannes Express chairlift.

This is the area under the Pointe de Nyon and Chamossière peaks and the Chamossière six-seater chairlift reaches the highest point in the ski area. This is one of the best areas for experienced skiers to head to, with a good choice of long challenging runs and off-piste possibilities in the free-ride terrain. (Skiers and boarders should inform themselves about avalanche danger and consider taking a local guide if they plan to head into unfamiliar areas here.)
