Having spent two weeks on this stunning island, I can attest to the fact that Santorini is one of the many wonderful destinations in Greece. As I wandered around the island, I discovered its countless hidden gems, including its unique volcanic beaches.

These shores, covered in black sand or pebbles, are a one-of-a-kind experience unlike any other Greek beach. Fortunately, with the island being relatively small and well-connected, I was able to visit a variety of these unique beaches during my stay.

So, if you're planning a trip to Santorini, be sure to explore these top volcanic beaches for an unforgettable experience on this incredible island.

1. Red Beach

Red Beach features a natural sight that offers a striking contrast between towering red cliffs and the cobalt waters below. Its distinctive Martian-like landscape is an absolute must-visit, drawing a crowd of tourists, particularly during peak season. Despite its compact size, the beach provides an unmatched visual experience that never fails to mesmerise visitors.

For those who seek adventure on their beach day, you can enjoy stand-up paddleboarding, which offers a peaceful way to explore the calm bay. Pairing a trip to Red Beach with a visit to Akrotiri, home to one of the most significant archaeological sites in the eastern Mediterranean, promises a fulfilling day out.

You’ll also appreciate the convenience of sunbeds, water sports equipment and umbrellas available for hire and a snack bar near the bus stop and car park. Getting to Red Beach is easy as its well connected via the islands bus routes, or with a short drive, walk or scenic boat ride. However, accessing the beach can be a little difficult as to get down to it you need to walk along a path and be careful where you put your feet with it being rocky and at times windy.

Be sure to apply plenty of sunscreen as the surrounding cliffs amplify the summer heat. You’ll also want to pack plenty of water and snacks to prevent the need to keep walking up the rocky bath.

2. Caldera Beach

Tucked away on the west side of Santorini, facing the stunning caldera, lies Caldera Beach, also considered as Balos Beach, which is further down. This hidden gem can be reached by braving a steep, dusty, and winding road north of Akrotiri.

The shoreline is adorned with dark pebbly sand and the crystal-clear waters offer a perfect spot for scuba diving enthusiasts. Caldera Beach is surrounded by the island’s iconic cliffs, providing a relaxed escape for visitors to unwind.

You can enjoy local delicacies nearby while enjoying the serene views of Thirasia and the picturesque villages of Fira and Oia in the distance thanks to its half-moon like shape with them being on the other side of the island.

Despite its remote location, you’ll be rewarded with a peaceful, private beach experience, while public car parking and eateries are conveniently located nearby. So, whether you seek to dive into the depths or relax on the shore, Caldera Beach is a retreat, away from the more crowded spots on the island.

3. Perissa Beach

Perissa Beach, situated at the foot of Mesa Vouno Mountain, is a perfect destination for beach lovers visiting Santorini. The beach's black lava sand against the deep blue, crystal-clear water creates a distinctive scenery that attracts tourists from around the world. Perissa Beach is an extensive beach that merges seamlessly with Perivolos, offering entertainment and relaxation along the southeast coast of Santorini.

This popular beach is well-equipped with amenities like sunbeds, umbrellas, lifeguards, and a playground. It has also been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag award for its cleanliness and adherence to high environmental standards. Adventure fanatics can enjoy a range of water sports, including windsurfing, jet skiing, and diving, with two on-site diving centres. For families travelling with kids, there is a nearby water park with slides and pools that offer an exciting day out.

The beach is lively and buzzing, with an array of cafes, tavernas, and beach bars that serve local food and drinks. As the night approaches, the area transforms into an energetic nightlife scene, drawing a dynamic crowd eager to experience the island's legendary hospitality and charm.

4. Vlychada Beach

At Vlychada Beach you can escape to an almost otherworldly landscape, situated on the southern shores of Santorini. Here, the striking white cliffs, sculpted by nature's forces, offer a stark contrast against the dark hues of the volcanic sand and pebbles underfoot. Here, you can find a secluded spot to unwind on the ample beach that stretches out before you. Despite its lunar appearance, Vlychada is equipped for comfort with sunbeds and umbrellas dotting the coastline for a relaxing day under the sun.

In addition to the beach's serene environment, a charming marina nearby invites visitors to explore and observe the gentle bobbing of yachts and small boats in the calm waters. The Tomato Industrial Museum, located a stone's throw from the beach, offers an interesting insight into Santorini's agricultural heritage for those interested in the local culture.

Vlychada's combination of natural beauty and cultural richness makes it a lovely spot for those seeking both relaxation and exploration. Its relaxed atmosphere, set apart from the island's more bustling locations, make it a truly distinctive beach experience on Santorini.

5. Monolithos Beach

Situated on the east coast of Santorini, near the airport Monolithos Beach also offers a less busy spot amongst the island's other beaches. The beach draws its name from the imposing rock that shelters the Agios Ioannis church and appeals to both locals and families alike due to its shallow waters and an array of recreational facilities.

The soft sand at Monolithos is more like the common sand you’d expect to see in other Greek islands such as Cyprus, so this beach destination in Santorini may be more appealing to those who may not be keen on the hot black pebble sands at other beaches, which can be hot to walk on.

Monolithos Beach has a marina and well-organised sections with sunbeds, umbrellas, and a lifeguard tower as well as entertainment and nearby cafes, bars, taverns, and restaurants. For those who seek privacy, you’ll also find a secluded area with natural shade. With Santorini being windy at times the beach is a hub for kitesurfing, and other fun leisure activities. So, it’s a great family-friendly beach, in an ideal destination.

6. Agios Georgios Beach

Agios Georgios Beach on the southern edge of Santorini seamlessly continues the stretch of sand from Perivolos Beach. With its stunning grey sandy shores and clear waters, this place offers the perfect escape for both relaxation and water sports enthusiasts. You can enjoy a variety of activities, including scuba diving, windsurfing, jet skiing, and paddleboarding, all while basking in the peaceful atmosphere away from the island's more populous areas.

Agios Georgios forms a continuous stretch with Perissa and Perivolos beaches, but it still maintains a distinctly peaceful charm that attracts those in search of privacy, including celebrities. The semi-organised nature of the beach offers sunbeds with straw umbrellas and a selection of beach bars, ensuring comfort without compromising the natural beauty of the beach. A few trees dotted along the shoreline provide natural shade for those seeking relief from the sun.

When it comes to refreshments and dining, visitors are spoilt for choice with cafes, taverns, and restaurants lining the waterfront, all offering a taste of local cuisine in a relaxed setting.

7. Koloumbos Beach

Koloumbos Beach, is Santorini's best-kept secret. Located on the secluded north-eastern coast, this quiet beach offers an idyllic retreat away from the tourist hotspots. The ride to Koloumbos Beach is an adventure, with winding roads that lead to the remote shores, requiring a hire car or motorbike.

The rugged landscape that hugs the black-grey sand and pebbles creates a wild, untamed feel. The waves crashing onto the shore highlight the beach's natural beauty, with no amenities available you’ll need to come prepared with only the essentials. So, is perfect for those seeking a minimalist beach experience. You may also find that this pristine and untouched beach is favoured by nudists and those craving privacy.

Swimming in the nearby underwater Columbo crater is a unique experience that is highly recommended. However, caution is advised as only strong swimmers are suitable for this activity. The Seal Cave is also nearby and is another popular attraction, but visitors should be aware of the potential risks before exploring and always do their research first.

Overall, the sense of peace and privacy that surrounds the warm waters of Koloumbos Beach also known as Columbo Beach makes it a rare and special find for anyone seeking a disconnect from the world and a chance to connect with nature.

8. White Beach

Lefki Ammos, more commonly known as White Beach, is an intriguing destination surrounded by striking white cliffs that provide a striking contrast to its dark pebbles and grey volcanic sands. This singular interplay of colours results from the blend of the island's volcanic origins and the nearby white limestone cliffs, creating a fascinating palette. The secluded cove is a fantastic spot for visitors seeking refuge from the crowds on other Santorini beaches, providing crystalline waters for a refreshing swim.

Getting to this hidden gem requires a bit of adventure. Visitors can walk there by following a path from Kambia Beach, taking in the amazing coastal views. Alternatively, they can opt for taxi boats departing from Red Beach for a more direct approach, giving them a unique perspective on Santorini's coastline. For a luxurious experience, travellers may join a catamaran or yacht cruise that stops at White Beach while also offering gourmet meals and drinks for a memorable day out.

While the amenities on White Beach are scarce, with only a handful of sunbeds and umbrellas available, you’ll need to prepare ahead with snacks and sunscreen. The secluded location of the beach and its distinctive backdrop ensures a soothing visit, making it one of the many must-see destinations in Santorini.

9. Kamari Beach

In the shadow of Mesa Vouno Mountain, Kamari Beach boasts extensive black volcanic sands that attract a diverse mix of tourists seeking natural beauty and a convenient beach spot. This well-organised shore provides ample amenities to cater to all needs, including sunbeds with parasols, various restaurants and tavernas, and water sports for those seeking an adrenaline rush. The beach also prides itself on cleanliness and has been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag award.

Adjacent to the beach, a lively promenade allows you to take leisurely strolls, shop, or simply bask in the lively atmosphere. The diving centre offers an underwater adventure, while a nearby football field and beach volleyball area provide options for land-based activities. Kamari's proximity to significant archaeological sites, such as Ancient Thera, adds a cultural layer to its appeal, making it a unique mix of leisure, sport, and history.

With its assortment of cafes, bars, and nightclubs, Kamari Beach remains an energetic spot from dawn till dusk, offering a complete beach experience in Santorini.

11. Eros Beach

On Santorini's southern coastline lies Eros Beach, a secluded cove. This idyllic destination is accessed through a rugged dirt road leading to a restricted parking area, ensuring a peaceful beach experience. The white-brown cliffs encircling the beach are a testament to the forces of nature, sculpted over time, and create a dramatic backdrop to the pebbly shore. Despite the rather deep waters, you can enjoy a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear ocean.

Eros Beach has amenities such as straw umbrellas, sun loungers, and luxurious beds placed perfectly for day-long relaxation. Adding to the charm of the beach is a beach bar-restaurant made from stone and wood, which seamlessly blends in with the natural surroundings. With ambient music creating a romantic ambiance, particularly enchanting in the evenings, this spot is a favourite destination for couples celebrating special occasions.

The presence of a beach volleyball court adds a playful element to this idyllic setting. Living up to its namesake, Eros Beach presents a romantic sanctuary that is unmatched in its beauty and atmosphere, offering a unique day out in Santorini.

Tips for Visiting Beaches in Santorini

To make the most of your Santorini beach excursion, start by timing your visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid crowds and scorching midday heat.

Remember to slather on high SPF sunscreen frequently to shield yourself from the blazing Greek sun, as well as the wind as you’ll find that the island can get windy at times so you may not feel yourself burning. Something, I personally experienced, so be careful. In addition, bring along essentials such as water, snacks, and a beach umbrella as some beaches like Koloumbos and White Beach may not have many amenities.

Choose sturdy footwear that's comfortable for rocky terrain, such as the pebble or volcanic rocks at Vlychada or Red Beach. You may also want to avoid walking on the black sands barefoot as they can get significantly hot during the peak of summer.

You can use the local bus services for a cheap and hassle-free way to travel to different beaches. Renting a vehicle in Santorini, on the other hand, gives you the freedom to explore more isolated spots at your leisure.

Above all, make sure to preserve the natural beauty of the beaches by responsibly disposing of any rubbish and maintaining the pristine condition of these magnificent destinations for future visitors.
