Primula vialii
ORCHID PRIMULA

Enchanting Primula vialii has poker shaped flower stems of lavender with red caps.
So it rivets the eye in spring & early summer with closely packed flowers.

It is not an orchid, but the blooms are equally as lovely.
And these unusual flower spires also make excellent cut flowers for small vases.

Otherwise unusual Primula vialii is similar to many other Primula in growing its requirements.
So it enjoys positions in Shade to Deep Shade.

It is robustly frost hardy.
And enjoys moist and boggy spots together with heavier soil, clay based soils, and soils well enriched with compost and leaf mould.

Primula vialii forms an evergreen perennial clump of typical Primula foliage, sitting close to the ground as a neat rosette.
Then the flower pokers sit very jauntily above during spring and early summer.
Easy low maintenance plant.

40cm. High in flower spires x 25cm. Wide evergreen foliage rosette.

SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY

Sow indoors in winter, spring or autumn / or scatter outdoors winter or spring.

Indoors: First sow seeds in punnets on surface of good quality seed raising mix.

Sowing Tip: Primula vialli has very fine seeds. So pop a little fine sieved mix or sand into the bag and shake around before sowing. This will collect up the seed and help to sow it more evenly.

Once you have scattered the seed on the surface, then gently pat to ensure good contact with the mix.
Do not cover with any further mix because these seeds need light to germinate.

Now thoroughly moisten the punnet by standing it in a shallow water bath and allowing the moisture to percolate up to the surface of the mix from below.

Place in well-lit position (But not in any direct sunlight).

Temperatures of approx. 15-18°C. are best for optimum and rapid germination.

Continue to keep the punnet moist  by misting from a spray water bottle.
Covering the punnet with a clear plastic lid, plastic bag, or glass will also help to maintain consistent moisture and prevent drying out.

Seedlings emerge in approx. 21-40 days.

However if the seeds are shy to germinate – Then cling wrap the moist sown punnet.
Place in fridge (not freezer) for 4-6 weeks.
Then remove, unwrap & return to well-lit position at 15-18°C.  Keep moist.

Seed Count: 10 seeds per pack approx.
(We always aim to exceed the stated seed count and give a generous serve. Note that the seeds are extremely fine).
