e are all pretty well accepting of the mind/body interface interpreted mostly to mean that the mind can influence the body, although we are all familiar with the reverse that physical fatigue, malaise, pain, etc. influence the mind. Or does the body influence the mind? The mind can interpret the causes for such conditions and guide us to take action to overcome them. We have greater understanding today of chemical and nutritional imbalances that affect the psyche, and can change our nutrition and cleanse the body to overcome depression and psychological disturbances. Instead of accepting such physical causes, the mind can become the controller. Through hypnosis and other forms of mind programming, we can influence body functions, for good or bad. Many times it is for bad in the ways that advertising and the media stimulate interest and demand for foods, drugs and behavior that are bad for us for our health and for our family, social and professional relationships. In these situations, others are using the mind/body interface to gain control over our behavior. We need to recognize these activities for what they are, and assert control over them. To a large measure, this is what self-hypnosis is about asserting control over your own life. Still, even though the phrase body, mind & spirit is becoming familiar, the reality of a spirit/mind/body interface is still very challenging.
Spirit = Consciousness We dont have a grasp of what we mean by the word spirit. As a noun the word is used variously: spirits of the dead, getting into the spirit of things, Holy Spirit; descriptively as in spirited, spiritual, spirituality, Spiritual Truth; and even as a verb as in spirited away. As indicated in that last usage, spirited away, we say that spirit itself is invisible even though it may manifest through mind and body. What is the difference between Mind and Spirit? What if we use the analogy of a person swimming in the ocean? The ocean is analogous to spirit, and
the swimmer to mind. The ocean, like spirit or consciousness, exists while the swimmer makes choices and moves about. But, it is said, all things come from the sea. Life evolved from the ocean, indeed even the human body is mostly water, and blood has a salt content like that of the ocean. But the body is a particularization of a greater whole. Now that we live on land, we are told that we come from dust (dirt, earth) and to dust we return. So it is with mind: mind is a particularization of consciousness, but it too is part of the greater whole. The body lives on the surface of earth and shares in the earths bounty because of conscious choices and actions made through mind. The individual mind lives on the surface of the ocean of consciousness and shares in the whole through the conscious choices and actions made by mind.
Mind = Controller Because of the nature of our particular reality, we are more limited in our physicality than we are in our mentality. Physically we cannot fully merge with earth except through the death of the body. Mentally, however, we can merge in lesser or greater extent with consciousness through techniques of magick, meditation, prayer, ritual and various shamanic practices. Just as we learn to live better on earth through various technologies (agriculture, husbandry, manufacture, etc.) we learn to live better in consciousness (or spirit) through these various spiritual technologies. Spirit = Mind + Body Some teach that all comes from spirit, just as life came from the ocean. Spirit is all, but the body is a place of dwelling for the endurance of a single incarnation. The individual mind (personality, ego) is also a dwelling place for a single incarnation, but the nature of mind is such that it can be expanded beyond the specific limitations of personality to give us glimpses of the greater spiritual realities. The body grows through nourishment and exercise so mind grows in similar fashion, and in so doing opens to what we call spirit. Using our body, under the direction of mind, we can move upon the surface of earth and identify with all humanity and all life, and using mind we can move upon the surface of consciousness and identify with spirit. Because mind and body are of spirit, they influence each other. But when we accept that mind is the controller, mind can change the paradigm from mere interaction to one where the powers of spirit can be brought to bear on the physical continued on page 76

movement towards embracing the spiritual world will have any long-term impact on modern environmental problems such as deforestation? SK: I hope it will, but I get skeptical about the American system: big corporations and well-funded special interest groups have such a stranglehold on our government. But Pollyanna that I am, I live in hope that the strength of environmental groups will continue to grow. I am especially hopeful when I hear about people like the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Wangari Maathai. When she returned to Kenya after college in the United States, she was horrified at the degradation of the forests and the plight of many women. Combining the two, she worked through womens groups not only to plant trees for conservation and provide jobs, but also to raise awareness about the environment. One person can make a difference. NW: A couple of the ideas that you point out more than once in the book reminded me of the Slow Movement, which has received a lot of media attention recently. For instance, you emphasize that our contact with the natural world is held together by a delicate thread because of our fast-paced lives; and in Chapter Six you state that in ritual we seek balance with the elements. Two things fundamental to the Slow Movement are taking control of our time and achieving balance. Did this movement influence your work? SK: I heard about the Slow Movement a number of years ago and like their ideas because from time to time I get caught up in the frantic pace of our society. I discovered how a walk in the woods could just dissolve the unnecessary chatter that takes up so much brain time. However, two other things have influenced me more and those are my pagan beliefs and yoga. As a pagan, I try to live what I believe. Ritual is not a passive event; one must engage their energy to participate and each time, each ritual creates changes. I dont think its possible for me to engage in something holy and then tuck everything away until the next ritual. Once you engage your energy that way you cant simply turn it off and not
engage in life. When we engage energy in ritual we are connecting with the natural world, the greater world around us. That stays with you. Although the yoga classes I teach have a pagan flavor to them, I chose to go through a very traditional teacher training program where we studied the Bhagavad-Gita and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. In the Sutras we learn how vitally important it is to slow down and be present. Perhaps the most important thing Ive learned in the nine years Ive been practicing yoga is how to breathe deeply and fully. Like ritual, it allows me to consciously come into both myself and the web of life.
world we can see that so much of the stuff we frantically chase after is meaningless. Connecting with the natural world helps us learn how we are connected with everything and that we cannot go and do something like pollute a river or use more gasoline than we really need without there being a consequence elsewhere. NW: Are you active in any particular environmental efforts? SK: Im not active with any particular group. The point I hope to make is that we dont have to live in a tent or forego modern conveniences or dedicate a huge amount of time campaigning in a group in order to make a difference.
I discovered how a walk in the woods could just dissolve the unnecessary chatter that takes up so much brain time.
NW: You seem to advocate profound lifestyle modification when you speak of spiritual poverty and our waning connection with the natural world. Do you wish to promote social change through your teaching? SK: That wasnt my intent, but social change wouldnt be a bad thing. My intent was helping one person at a time to find themselves on the micro level and to see where they fit in the world. Because our modern world is such a blur, its easy to feel lost. I find this question is connected with the previous one about slowing down because when we can be present with ourselves and open to the natural
Its the day-to-day decisions on what we buy, how we use things and how we get rid of things that add up. Here in America we use a disproportionate amount of the worlds resources and we are wasteful, but it doesnt have to be that way. I will be happy if I help even a few people to become more mindful of the impact each of us has on the world and how we can each produce an effect for the good of all. NW: What kinds of trees grow where you live? Did the abundance of these trees influence where you chose to live? SK: There is a huge variety of trees where I live, and I consider myself fortunate because even though Im only 45 minutes outside of Manhattan
Im near an old growth forest with oaks that are about 350 to 400 years old. Yes, I think subconsciously the trees had an influence on my moving here. In addition, I have become aware that the particular routes I choose to drive are ones with a lot a trees. NW: You write about trees association with dreams, spells, rituals and gods/goddesses. How will your book speak differently to pagans versus nonpagans? SK: Ive found that non-pagans arent put off by these things, and in fact there is a lot of curiosity. I think the Goddess movement and the yoga community have done a lot to open the door, as well as the interest in Native American spirituality by those of other cultures. NW: Is tree energy different from the energy of other natural things? SK: To me its different. I feel a deep sense of wisdom and connection that I dont get with other things. I also get a sense of contacting something ancient, timeless and majestic, whose true purpose is about service a valuable thing for us to learn about. NW: Is there a reason you wrote this book now? SK: Basically my reason is to share what Ive found and experienced with trees. And, okay, perhaps my own way of stirring up social change. I guess its similar to the reason I wanted to teach yoga and not just practice it: when you find something that really wows you, you want to pass it on to other people.

ast summer when I was stuck at an airport and whiled away the time with my nose in a magazine, one article in particular made me sit up and take notice. It said that anthropologists studying crosscultural patterns found that all the worlds civilizations fall into tree or treeless groups. This difference apparently has a major influence on the core mindset of a culture. The article went on to mention how biodiversity was accompanied by cultural and linguistic diversity. Tree people tended to be polytheistic, less militaristic and supportive of partnership (equality between genders) societies. This wasnt a surprise to me because I have found that drawing close to the green world opens doors to new yet ancient forms of energy and awareness. Trees can function as gateways to different levels of being and can provide us with a better understanding of ourselves and others. A walk in the woods makes it easy to understand the awe and reverence our ancestors had for trees. Civilization as we know it could not have developed without trees. After humans first attached sharpened stones to the ends of sticks to extend their reach as hunters, and kindled fires for warmth and cooking, they were on their way to creating a more comfortable life. Eventually trees were viewed as something more than a source of food, shelter and raw material. They became part of our spiritual and cultural traditions as well as powerful symbols that embody life and the cycle of time. Trees serve as vivid reminders of life, death and rebirth, and they seem imbued with magic because they simultaneously dwell in the three realms of heaven, earth and underworld. Trees are central
in the creation stories of diverse cultures such as the Celts, Greeks, Indonesians, Scandinavians, Siberians and Japanese. Druids are perhaps the most wellknown group that worshipped in sacred groves but they were not the only people to do so. The earliest sanctuaries of the Germanic tribes were also in forests. In Lithuania certain areas were designated as holy groves where information was sought from tree oracles. Similarly, the ancient Greeks consulted tree oracles in their sacred groves dedicated to Zeus. Nowadays, people are rediscovering the majesty of trees and are appreciating with wonder these magnificent giants because in the woods you cant help but feel part of something huge and

magical. Honoring nature and living more closely with the rhythms of the green world brings us deeper meaning and spiritual satisfaction. With this comes the self-realization of returning to Source to the Divine. As a Druid, I feel a special affinity with trees and I am blessed to experience the energy exchange that can take place with them. Through the years I sought ways to make this energy part of my everyday consciousness because it helped me find and express who I am as well as how I want to live on this earth. The good news about working with tree energy is that you dont have to run off and live in a secluded cottage deep in
the forest (as attractive as that may seem on certain days). The result of my sylvan exploration is the book, Whispers from the Woods, which is a guide that takes you through initial energy exercises and meditations to begin your work with trees. A range of various Celtic Oghams and the tree calendar are explored with suggestions for personalizing them to provide a link with the natural world that is uniquely yours. An approach adapted from feng shui offers a method to invite tree energy into your home for a healthy environment as well as to affect change in your life. Bringing tree energy into your rituals and spellcraft is also covered to help you tap into the subtle magic of the green world. Finally, shamanic journeying is presented as a tool for deeper exploration it is the world tree, axis mundi, that shamans from many cultures use to access other realms. Through these varied methods, trees serve as companions and guides as we explore the balance of our inner and outer worlds. After all, trees embody the spirit of balance as they extend in two directions one towards the dark and the other towards the light. Whispers from the Woods is intended to open our hearts and minds to the subtleties of the green world as we explore our place in the web of life. Trees provide many pathways to tap into this web and to help us live in harmony with the power and spirit of earths rhythms. Like music, they speak to something deep and primal within us. With the aid of tree energy we can harvest the fruits of our spiritual journey and find the seeds of our souls.

erbs are wonderful creatures. They can soothe a sore throat in a tea, add luster to hair in a rinse or enhance luck in an amulet. Anyone practicing magic should already have some familiarity with their wide range of uses; and if not, there exists a wealth of books on the subject, from Scott Cunninghams classics to Jude Williams decidedly practical tome. The natural properties of herbs are enhanced when a witch handles them properly and empowers them with magical intention. As Raven Grimassi writes in Wiccan Magick, There are four basic aspects of the Herbal Craft: planting, caring, harvesting and employing. These four steps are the occult mechanisms linking the Wiccan to the indwelling spirit of the herb, and helping to empower it. By using this formula the Wiccan can enter into a magickal relationship with the plant, and thus gain the favor of its spirit so that it will lend its aid to a work of magick. He goes on to list very specific actions to perform for each aspect listed. Of course, not every climate or every living situation is suitable for growing every kind of herb you may want to use, so it would be impossible to always plant your own batches. But when simply buying herbs from a supplier, you wont be able to plant, care for or harvest the plant youd like to employ, so that close connection and rapport with the herb will be missing from your work. So this year, do your best to either plant a bed of the herbs most suitable to your climate and most likely to be used by you, or if you dont have a garden, care for some potted plants in a window box. At least the few herbs you do choose to cultivate will be that much more potent. Youll know exactly what went into them, and can be
sure that they will be safe for ingestion or other uses. First off, choose a place to plant. Even a strip of soil next to a curb will suffice; if you have a yard, so much the better. Consult with your local nursery or gardening club to select a location with the right amount of sunlight, moisture and drainage for the herbs youd like to plant (be sure to check whether theyre even viable for cultivation in your climate!). Then you might want to conduct a Gardening Permission Ritual see the box on the right for a splendid example. Once youve chosen the locale and prepared the soil, its time to plant! Witches are used to consulting the almanac for everything, and planting is no exception; the moon phases are just as important here as in your spellwork. Ann Moura (Aoumiel) describes how to align your gardening activities with the lunar cycle for best results in her book Green Witchcraft: In planting and harvesting herbs for magical use, the phases of the moon play an important part in your schedule. For planning purposes, most calendars designate the days of the new moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter (an almanac will also have this information). Plant flowering annuals and above-ground crops with exterior seeds (such as wheat) when the moon is waxing between the new moon and the first quarter. Between the first quarter and the waxing full moon, plant above-ground crops with interior seeds (such as peas). Root crops, bulbs, biennials and perennials (such as most herbs) should be planted between the last quarter and the new moon. Many people not only plant during the right phase of the moon, but under the proper astrological sign as well. Using the moon in relation to astrological signs is often featured in almanacs. Since the information is a common feature of Wicca, you should know that
the moon remains in an astrological sign about two and one-half days, and again an almanac is your best source for this information. Fruitful signs, used for planting and pruning for growth, are Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces, Taurus, Capricorn and Libra. The barren signs, used for weeding, cultivating and harvesting herbs, are Leo, Virgo and Sagittarius, with Aries, Gemini and Aquarius for harvesting herbs and roots in particular. Care for your herbs by providing them with the nourishment they require (read up on your plants!), plus a lot of love and kind words. Rather than using chemical pesticides and herbicides to control pests and weeds, look into natural alternatives. For example, putting out a birdbath will attract birds to your garden to help with the insects. One website, www.invisiblegardener.com, provides a great quantity of easy-to-follow advice as well as recipes for making your own organic sprays from ordinary household items; there are many other websites doing the same. Again, read up on the subject! Finally, when youre ready to harvest, do it right. Keep track of what you harvest and when, and dont neglect to label them right away. Moura also provides guidelines for herb collection and storage in her aforementioned book: Herbs should be collected on a dry day, preferably cut with your bolline. Tell the plant why you are taking a piece and ask for permission. You should either leave something in return or give the plant your blessing, however your herb garden plants are likely to be more generous and less interested in receiving a gift because they know you tend them. Nevertheless, it never hurts to be polite to the energies (devas) that inhabit and empower the plants. To retain the magic properties, do not set the cutting on the ground. A garden basket over one arm is very useful. Tie the herbs in small bundles and hang a string in an airy, dark place to dry (I use red thread or embroi-

dery floss to enhance the power of the herb). Leaves and flowers without stems can be dried in a muslin bag, although I have used paper sacks with equal success. After a week, the herbs should be ready to be crumbled, minced or ground, then stored in the dark in tins or in bottles with screw-top lids. I save larger sized bottles from ready-made sauces and jams for re-use in storing my herbs and teas in a cupboard away from light. Finally, dont forget to enjoy the fruits (and leaves, and roots) of your labors! Have some fun making sachets,
soothing baths, natural hand lotion and invigorating teas, or alleviating the occasional sting of an insect bite! Use them in your spells and rituals to enhance your workings. Read up and youll be amazed at all you can do with a few choice herbs.
The following Gardening Permission Ritual is an excerpt from Dorothy Morrisons book Bud, Blossom, & Leaf:
nce youve found the ideal gardening spot, its a good idea to ask the resident Earth Spirits for permission to use it. Take a few minutes and sit in the center of the area. Dig your fingers into the soil and experience the rich dampness of the earth. Close your eyes and watch as your fingers become root systems and travel happily beneath the surface. See the lush foliage sprout from your body. Watch it blossom and bear fruit. Savor the breeze, the sunshine and the moisture in the air. When you become fully attuned to the plant worlds, talk to the Earth Spirits. Let them know what you want to do. Invoke Them by saying something like: Earth Spirits of this place, come near Ive something to say that I want You to hear I ask for this space for a garden today To till it, and grow it, and tend it my way To carefully nurture each plant that I grow To love, cherish and care for this place as my own I ask Your permission, O Spirits of Earth I wait for Your answer in love, light and mirth Then wait for an answer or signal of approval. This could be a word that echoes through your brain, a falling leaf, a sudden gust of wind or something much more subtle. Once approval is given, offer the Earth Spirits a bit of yourself in return a strand of hair, a fingernail clipping or a drop of saliva works well and bury it in the soil. This offering not only creates a personal bond with the garden spot, but assures the resident spirits that you will tend to the areas personal needs with the same care you give to your own.

The Enchanted Cat also features a journal section that allows you to take notes, jot down your experiences from the meditations and provides a place to write your own feline fascinations. The journal allows you to personalize this book and make it uniquely yours. In the journal I have also included a spell
worksheet and correspondence charts for cat magick. This will allow you to conjure up your own custom-made variety of enchantment and provide an at-aglance correspondence section for you to refer back to.
In the Company of Cats With cats in our lives, we have the opportunity to take some quiet time to discover our own courage, and to nurture our spirit. From cats we learn the value of grace and silence. We learn to look within. At home, in the company of cats as we observe their intuitive and captivating qualities, we begin to appreciate our own inner magick. No matter what your magickal tradition, whether you are male or female, young or old, we all need to have a sense of divine spark within ourselves. In that quiet place where visions are born, our imagination flourishes and magick begins. By taking the time to focus our attention inward and learning to work with a feline companion, wisdom and witchery may be achieved.

Women seem to love this garden because it invokes the feminine energy of the Goddess and Moon. Plant it with herbs that mirror your emotional needs, the transitions in your life and the turning points in your spirituality. Plant a willow tree in the center, or place a Goddess statue or fountain there (they make terrific Goddess symbols). Use it to meditate, gain insight and perform Moon rituals. Wild Witchery
There is lyricism and mystery, simple wisdom and profound realization, great comfort and lifechanging power in the wild witchery I will be discussing in this book. It is witchcraft for those of us who yearn to express our own inherent spirituality in a joyous, meaningful manner, not within temples or churches but out in the landscape and within the deepest fathomless places in our own souls places that echo the furthest reaches of the starry-veiled cosmos. It is a way to understand our own wild heart, our soul nature. I will explain how our soul nature finds a perfect elemental expression on wind-buffeted granite outcrops and in deep still green water alike. The understanding of our own true soul nature will come as unexpectedly as the warmth to be found in midwinter sunlight, as tenacious as the twisted tree that blooms and grows despite its exposed position, as moving and awe-inspiring as the sound of a single swans wing-beats that are heard as it makes its way home alone across the moors. It is a magical path for those of us with poetry in our souls.

ne of the great things about tarot is that no matter how long you practice, there is always more to learn. You can use your tarot journal to analyze those four realms of your experience, both separately and as a whole. You can see where most of your focus lies, where your experiences overlap and where you have room to grow and change. Your Spiritual Self The fiery wands cards, which usually picture freshly cut branches from leafy trees, represent the world of spiritual existence. They symbolize inspirations and drives, passions and primal quests. Think of the wands cards as you work with the following journaling prompts:
Cups: Months
Pentacles: Years
If you want to be specific, the numbers on the cards can be used to give an indication of the number of days, weeks, months or years. As with any methods, reversals should also be examined, because these can represent obstacles to resolution of the issue. The timing only provides a potential for when things could happen, if any obstacles are removed. A spread that is mostly or entirely reversed may represent a situation in which the event being asked about may never happen, or in which there are many obstacles to overcome.

Foundation Card Some readers draw a card from the bottom of the deck at the end of the layout or after the interpretation, which is called the foundation card. A bias card can be especially useful when reading for ourselves, as it can be hard to be completely objective. If you get a positive card, dont assume the situation is really gloomier than you think. Instead, think of the card as a pair of glasses you are looking through that colors everything you see. For example, if the bias card is the Two of Cups, you may be missing the fact that some

For most of Western history, the mysticism of the East was an exotic enigma. Few people knew much at all about Buddhism, Hinduism, Shintoism or other Eastern spiritual paths. In the nineteenth century, the West began to understand more about these faiths as Western travelers brought back religious texts and teachings from Tibet, India, China and other exotic destinations. The books on this page represent the marriage of Eastern and Western approaches to divination. I Ching for Beginners is a straightforward guide to using this 4,000year-old form of Chinese divination. You do not need any previous experience with the I Ching to benefit from its guidance. Karmic Palmistry incorporates the Eastern idea of karma, or the belief that our past actions, both positive and negative, have an effect on our lives. Good deeds create positive karma, while selfish or destructive acts create negative karma with unpleasant consequences. This book helps you decode the lines in your hand, unlocking the secrets of your karma. The Buddha Tarot is a completely unique Tarot deck, melding Buddhist thought and iconography with one of the Wests most venerable forms of divination. In our increasingly global society, its hard to imagine a time when hardly anyone had heard of the Buddha, or would know what you were talking about if you mentioned your karma. Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, you may want to pause and thank the many people who have walked the path before you, helping us to understand and benefit from the wisdom of the East.

hy does Hollywood think we should associate dragons, wizards and magical worlds with turkey, Christmas trees and trips to crowded mall multiplexes? I have no idea, but, whatever the reason, the season of big fantasy movie releases is now officially past. Harry Potter fans have thoroughly digested the latest movie and have returned to speculation about the next, and presumably final, book. The movie version of C.S. Lewiss first Chronicles of Narnia book, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, is disappearing from movie theater marquees. And, of course, King Kong has come down from the Empire State Building. Fortunately, the world of fantasy novels knows no season. Publishers tend to place their best fantasy bets in the spring and early summer, but readers can generally count on a steady stream of new fantasy all throughout the year, sufficient to satisfy the most insatiable appetite. Llewellyn always has a particularly diverse fantasy offering, and especially so this season, with a book from the beloved veteran fantasy and horror author John Peel and a book from an exciting newcomer, Jo Whittemore. The Book of Reality, from the extremely prolific John Peel, is the third all-new edition to his long-running Diadem: Worlds of Magic series, and its sure to please both seasoned John Peel fans as

well as new ones. I wont steal Johns thunder; youll find an article by him on page 28. (And while Im thinking of John Peel, fans should avail themselves of the dozens of Web sites dedicated to John and to his Diadem books in particular. Just Google Diadem and John Peel and youll find several. The Diadem Fan Zone at www.angelfire.com/ theforce/diadem/ is a great place to start. It has everything from an interview with John to the very thorough Diadem encyclopedia to new chapters in the Diadem story written by other fans. If youre a Diadem fan, its a surefire way to lose a couple of hours.) While Im not exactly sure how many books John Peel has published, I do know that Escape from Arylon is the first book published by Jo Whittemore; and Llewellyn is very excited to be able to introduce this new, young voice in fantasy for young adults. Escape from Arylon is the first book in the Silverskin Legacy series, a series that offers a unique and compelling blend of real and magical worlds, as well as new twists on fantasy standards from dragons to magic to swordplay. Fans of Christopher Paolini and Cornellia Funke, please dont miss this one. Jo Whittemore also has an article in this issue of New Worlds, on page 29. Booksellers consistently report that fantasy and science fiction are among their strongest categories, especially for teens and younger readers and with good reasons. Much of the most innovative and interesting fiction is coming from
these categories and the most loyal and voracious readers tend to flock to these shelves. One of the nice things about the young adult book market (one of the things that perhaps older readers would do well to notice) is that, in the big chain stores, YA and middle-grade books arent generally shelved according to genre. Booksellers tend to put all the young adult books together. They do this for lots or reasons; one of which is that they want to keep all the books with teenage characters and teenage issues together, no matter what the genre. But the nice, unintended consequence of this grouping is that it encourages readers to browse outside their genre comfort zones, and it encourages publishers to worry a little less about whether a book fits the conventions of a certain genre. Younger readers dont have decades of loyalty to a specific genre; theyre more willing to be surprised. When the dividing lines between genres get blurry, books can really get exciting and interesting. Youre encouraged to consider all the possibilities. You consider books with fairies and football players, spirit guides and cheerleaders. Witch Ball, the latest book in The Seer series, from Linda Joy Singleton, is a great example. Timothy Carters hilarious Attack of the Intergalactic Soul Hunters is another. In both cases, readers will find healthy doses of the magical and the fantastic, but theyll also get to meet characters whose lives look very much like the readers own (minus the psychic ability and the past-life experience as an intergalactically famous bounty hunter I suspect, but who can be sure?). When books combine genres well, readers get the best of both worlds: the familiar and the fantastic.

hen I first created the Diadem, one of my main intentions was to have a series where pretty much anything could happen. The problem with a lot of series is that after a handful of books it seems as if the writer has to repeat ideas theyve already used. I wanted a format where that would not happen. As a result, I created a series where the main characters could travel from world to world. If I tired of one, Id just move on. That way, I wouldnt be forced to repeat the same sort of story time after time. It also gave me the chance to move between genres. Diadem is primarily a fantasy series, but I didnt want to be limited to simply having magicians battling it out, or another new mythical monster turning up that too could get dull. Instead I could have a story thats mostly adventure, for example in Book of Oceans, our heroes battle pirates. Or I could have almost straight science fiction, as in Book of Reality. Both Score and Helaine have been home and visited their families (with varying degrees of success) so it seemed as if it was time for Pixel to do the same. Pixels world is a little like ours might be in a hundred years or so perhaps even less. The privileged few live in electronic cocoons, their minds inhabiting worlds of virtual reality. Others, less fortunate, slave away in work camps to support the dreamers. I created the world in 1997 with the aim of eventually going back to explore what was happening there. It was obviously a world where injustice ruled, and Score, Helaine and Pixel would never allow that to continue if they could do something positive to change it. Of course, as always, the bestlaid plans go astray. Between my first Diadem story and Book of Reality, the movie The Matrix came out. As often

happens to writers, somebody else had come up with an idea that was very close to what Id wanted to write myself. It left me with a big problem: whatever I did to Pixels home, I had to make sure it didnt look like I was simply ripping off The Matrix no matter that Id planned it years before the film even came out! So I had to go back and have a good think. Could I still do something involving people in virtual reality that wouldnt make the readers think of The Matrix? And, after a little thought, I realized that I could. So I put the movie out of my mind and set about creating a different sort of virtual world, where things are never quite what they appear to be, and Pixel discovers that everything he believed he knew about his family is a complete lie. Calomir, Pixels home world, ends up being one of the most nightmarish places Ive ever invented. Could it ever really come true? Are we getting so dependent on our computers and other machines that wed be willing to exchange our real lives for fantasies lived out inside a computer? On Calomir, people have done just that. It has become a world where people are being raised like animals, valued only for what they contribute to the real ruler of their planet. Some work as slaves, others dream their lives away, but both are ultimately doomed unless our heroes can save the day. Only this time around, one of them turns out to be a strange sort of traitor, which leaves the story with a horrible cliff-hanger When I started planning the story, one idea stuck in my mind. I knew that Book of Reality would have to be the first half of a two-part story, because I really wanted to end the first part with a scene that I couldnt get out of my head. It left Score, Helaine, Pixel and Jenna in a really terrible spot, but it felt like it was exactly the right ending for the story. Of course, the problem with that is that when it comes time to write the next book, an author has to find a way out of the sticky situation hes created! But thats a challenge for Book of Doom

hen some people decide to write a novel, they struggle over what genre to ascribe to, basing their career on what they think other people want to read. For me, writing fantasy was a decision that came easily. Ever since I was little, Ive been obsessed with the thought of other worlds where the laws of nature dont quite mimic our own. Every Halloween growing up, my costume would be some enchanted creature whose shoes I stepped into for a magical night. One year I was a fairy with wings that my mom had fashioned from coat hangers covered in pink gauze. Another year I was Smurfette in one of the plastic-mask-and-smock combos from the drugstore. Even now, as an adult, I enjoy books, movies and television shows with
fantasy themes because something special happens when they draw me in. They give me hope that something better exists. In the fantasy world, there is a rudimentary battle of good versus evil, and a chosen one (or few) can sway the outcome. Thats it. Thats the reason the heroes and heroines in these stories exist. They dont live to amass wealth and monopolize an industry. Tabloids and the paparazzi dont rule their lives. Rarely in fantasy do even remotely similar issues arise. Fantasy also gives me hope that something more exists. Popular, allAmerican teenagers may not be able to relate, but in high school, I was a nerd. When an essay was due or exam time came, the number of friends I amassed was astounding. The other 350 days of
the year, I was that smart, Asian girl with the Plague. Fantasy novels made me feel special. I thrived on such a genre, where often the hero or heroine has some shortcoming that turns out to be a blessing in disguise. The quiet, bookish characters are often the ones who hold the key to a countrys salvation; the character with a troubled past rescues everyone else from a troubling future. I felt a little bit exceptional knowing that could be me. And then theres the magic. No good fantasy story is devoid of magic. For those lacking the strength of a warrior or the dexterity of a rogue, magic is the skill that evens the playing field. It can rip the warriors sword from his hands at a 20-foot distance and can make the most adept rogue seem like a continued on page 76

ts that time of year again when spring arrives, we want to open our windows and doors, air out any stuffy corners and generally re-organize our homes, our business and our lives. I thought you might appreciate some insight into just what spring cleaning can mean for you from an astrological perspective. Sabian Symbols & Astrological Analysis by Blain Bovee provides some images and metaphors for the beginning of Spring 2006, and indicates what it can mean for all of us. The beginning of spring is the time when the Sun moves into the zodiacal sign of Aries. Spring represents the movement from the end of Pisces into Aries, and this transition, while just like any other small movement forward in the sky, represents a tangible shift from one perspective to another.
With some minor exceptions we cannot break these rules without paying serious penalties.
where the child is wrapped tightly in the mothers womb, and emerges to take a first breath and be embraced by the mother. In the Piscean image, I get a strong feeling of stillness. The stern stone face is unmoving and indeed immovable. The eyes are penetrating, the brow perhaps a bit wrinkled by concern. The Aries image provides a powerful opposite. The woman rises out of the sea! I envision a seal or dolphin or whale leaping out of the water into the air and sky. At the same time I envision being hugged close by a kindred spirit in a way that we all want and need. The Pisces image is calm and patient, the Aries image is ecstatic and explosive. The juxtaposition of these images tells us what spring is all about. We anticipate the riot of life that emerges from the earth, the trees and the animals around us. When that life bursts into existence, we are continually amazed by the wealth of living possibilities that open before us. No wonder we want to clean house to clear space in our lives for the new, the different. How much can we benefit from a bit of mental and emotional housecleaning? We can clear space for new, exciting adventures in our lives by spending time before the Spring Equinox in quiet anticipation. Then when new opportunities come along, we have a place to cradle them, nurture them and pursue them.
The Equinox Moon Need a hint about how to do this mental/emotional housecleaning? Lets look at the Sabian symbol for the Moon to get some ideas. The Moon in the chart is in the sixth degree of Sagittarius, and the symbol for this degree is A Game of Cricket. I hardly know anything about playing cricket. I know it is played outdoors, and it involves a ball, some wickets and eleven players on each team. Beyond that, the rules elude me, in much the same way that I dont really understand hockey. I do know that to be cricket is to be fair and sporting. I know that cricket players take the game just as seriously as I take writing. If I write according to the rules, you will understand what I say. If we play by the rules, other people find us relatively easy to work with. If we cheat, other people find us difficult and uncomfortable. So the Moon in the Equinox chart gives us an indication that we must play by the rules to be successful. All plant and animal life plays by a set of rules for birth, youth, maturity, old age and death. With some minor exceptions we cannot break these rules without paying serious penalties.

The very last degree of Pisces is represented by The Great Stone Face. The idea here is a stern facial expression, revealing little emotion of any kind. Blain says, Stone is hard and enduring, suggesting qualities of character that withstand hardship throughout life. He reminds us of the stoic faces of people who are honest and never compromise their principles; who are always willing to help others; who become lost in concentration when they work. In contrast, the first degree of Aries is represented by this image: A woman rises out of water, a seal rises and embraces her. This image brings stories of selkies to mind. Selkies are mythical human/seal beings who populate the North Atlantic. They shed their sealskins and come ashore in human form. This shedding of skin, according to Blain, can be likened to birthing,

Another image is the journey into a maze. Recall the myth of Jason and the Minotaur, in which the hero enters the maze, armed with a sword and a ball of twine. This string will not protect him or her from the Minotaur at the center of the maze, yet it is exactly what is needed to find the way safely back into the light. When you decide to journey into your own mind and heart, you have lifelines that will help you get back to conscious awareness. I think of mountain climbers descending the face of a cliff, suspended from a rope. They may descend very fast, or they may creep down the mountain, taking care at each stopping point to pause, check their equipment and make sure the rope is still doing its job. We can use dreams, meditation or psychotherapy to aid us in the investigation of the depths of mind. In other words, we are all equipped to make journeys to discover our own calling. Then we re-emerge, invigorated and ready to grow into the light of springtime again.
A Third Consideration In the Equinox chart, the Sun and Moon form a Grand Trine with Saturn. The Grand Trine is a harmonic triangle of energies that vibrate strongly at the time of the Equinox, so Saturn in the fifth degree of Leo indicates a third energy to consider. The image for this degree is Rock formations at the edge of a precipice. I imagine standing at the top of a steep, rocky slope, or even the edge of a cliff. I can see the bottom, but the way down is perilous. I dont want to leap over the edge, or even begin a careful descent, without some serious thought. That description reminds me of the climb down into the unconscious layers of mind. We dont know the way, we can barely perceive anything firm to hold onto and we sense the perilous nature of the descent. For the spring of 2006, I believe we all need to look deep into our hearts and minds to find inspiration for the coming season. We need to find a way to delve into our own less-conscious recesses of mind, face the emotional nature of such an act and emerge like the woman/selkie, into the air and light with newfound strength and wisdom.

An Overshadowing Influence
In an astrological chart, the position and relationship of planets in the houses and signs determines the influences that they have on your life and your future. Significant celestial events can have profound effects that extend into varying aspects of life. In Eclipses, astrologer and author Celeste Teal reveals how these distinct occasions can have a transformative effect in your life and relationships, how they can alter the fate of nations and how you can master their influences. Eclipses explores the history of interpreting these phenomena. Get a detailed analysis of elemental signs and the impact of an eclipse within those signs, the difference between solar and lunar eclipses, the different effects of North or South Node eclipses, how to determine the strength of an eclipse in a chart and even look at the effects of any planet that is eclipsed. Individual case studies culled from Ms. Teals thirty years of experience as an astrologer are used to illustrate the impact of eclipses. Specific stories demonstrate the impact upon individual scenarios, like a new home, a promotion, the beginning of a new relationship and more. Eclipses also illustrates large-scale results to global affairs, such as business, homeland security, foreign affairs, travel, communications and the stock market. Progressed charts allow forecasting into 2007 an important advantage of market outlook making this book vital to your financial survival. The appendix includes a master eclipse and planetary transits table through 2015, making it easy for you to add the influences of eclipses to readings for yourself, family, friends or clients. An expanded table of eclipses from 1900-2054 allows for advanced research.

rom ancient astrologers to modern man, eclipses are phenomena that capture the imagination. The mystery they invoke adds to their fascination. As a service to their kings, the oldest astrologers used them extensively to forecast droughts, famines, wars and other major events; thus, eclipses became known to portend evils. Some called them omens a decidedly final testimony, because they appear to operate outside the boundaries of our usual free will and control. But for all the great genius that went into the notes on eclipses handed down by the old mathematicians, there is little agreement among modern astrologers as to how long an eclipse is active. The formula passed along for measuring the life span of an eclipse was muddled or tampered with, leaving us with several different formulas to take into account. Without established basic criteria, assessing the impact of an eclipse is prone to inaccuracies and error. With an intense astrological interest in eclipses for many years, I have been tracking down and learning the secret workings of an eclipse. I discovered them to be particularly revealing in individual horoscopes, so I applied similar timing measures that were used reliably in specific cases to study the impact of eclipses on world affairs. I began this project in 2000, and focused my research on the last 200 years of United States history. When 9/11 happened, it conformed to a red-flag date range noted to be highly suspicious for catastrophic events and vicious attacks, based upon the historical study I conducted. In fact, the eclipse signifying that event was the most powerful eclipse of the new millennium, particularly for the USA. Shocked by the significance and magnitude of the event in relation to the formula being tested, I realized how essential it was to continue to study mundane astrology and to begin compiling notes. Combined with collected pieces relating to the impact of eclipses in natal charts that Id compiled over the years, there was plenty of material to constitute a book about eclipses, as they can be utilized both in terms of forecasting world events and for predicting personal transformations. How does one measure an eclipses life span? Does it matter if its a solar or a lunar eclipse, and whats the difference anyway? How do you determine the power of an eclipse and where does this special power come from? What is the Lord of the eclipse and what can it tell us? What about the zodiac sign of the eclipse? How do you know when an eclipse is activated and when to expect events? All of these questions are addressed in part one of the book. Part two shares astounding examples of major events and their connection to eclipses in our history, including events of
the new millennium, to demonstrate how the past can teach us much about the future. Topics include key figures, assassinations, finances, the stock market, 9/11, wildfires, shark attacks, war, space shuttles, extraterrestrials and more. I also share some projections, with special attention to the potential events signified by eclipses in 2007, and include an extended outlook to 2020. Part three is all about you, or how to determine the meaning of an eclipse in an individuals chart. Do you know you can draw definite conclusions of a predictive nature based solely upon eclipses? And, they are often to be anticipated! Even your prenatal eclipse says things about you. An eclipse acts as a guidepost on lifes journey a message from the cosmos. Youll find how to differentiate between solar and lunar eclipses, between North and South Node eclipses of each type; there are even key phrases for each of the four. Youll learn how to prepare for a significant eclipse by looking at house, angular and planetary indicators. By examining specific trigger dates you can also learn when to expect important developments. Theres even a collection of short stories from people who experienced eclipses similar to those you may be having now. Whether youre interested in an eclipse from a personal or a worldly perspective, tables and charts in part four cover each consecutive eclipse through 2012, with power ratings and dates of stimulation. There are mundane and planetary keys and elemental assignments that pinpoint the significance of any given eclipse. Ive included charts for many countries including the USA, for several U.S. cities and for NASA and the NYSE. These help locate parts of the world and other entities affected by eclipses. Each entry includes sundry historical information of interest and a listing of coming eclipses of significance. No matter your particular interest, you are sure to find a treasure or two in Eclipses: Predicting World Events and Personal Transformation.

The book I recommend the most to anyone interested in Wicca, or [involved] in Wicca already, is Dianne Sylvans The Circle Within. This is the only book in my library that keeps missing; friends and family are always borrowing it. This was one of the first books I let my parents read when I began Wicca. The book is filled with useful ideas and exercises I recommend this book to anyone interested in the craft! Alexis J. Brosius
I really did enjoy two of your books. Modern Magick was packed full of information for the price and very exhaustive on the subject of High Magick! I also really enjoyed Enochian Magick for Beginners it has much on the subject itself. Wayne R. Farren
I was given Charms, Spells & Formulas by Ray T. Marlbrough years ago, and I constantly reference it because of the straightforward way it explains how to manifest intent and make it a reality. The techniques in the book have helped me in their own right, and have also helped me to develop my own techniques to ensure success in my goals. Id recommend the book to anyone interested in learning how to get a little extra help from rites rooted in history. Try them for yourself the results wont disappoint. Angela Jacob
I have never been much of an avid reader, but when recently introduced to titles offered by your company regarding supernatural experiences, I found myself intrigued and wanting to know more. I read Dont Call them Ghosts and House of Spirits and Whispers and I found myself not wanting to put either one down until I had completely finished reading them. I would highly recommend these nonfictional titles to anyone interested in the unknown. Heather Walk

Whats a Mantrascope?
To reveal your mantra, read through your horoscope and look for the bold words. Read them to gain insightful wisdom that will help you achieve clarity in the coming months.
n ricor Old ideas are discarded and new ones unsettle your perspective. Turn your doubts into solutions and a firmer
resolve. You seem placid on the surface, but theres a lot going on behind the scenes. Spur your innovative spirit to action, because a hidden factor could create unexpected responsibilities. You are more vulnerable than usual. Staying grounded and focused are good preventative techniques. Youve got several spring projects in the works and a few books youre looking forward to reading. This is your source of pleasure now, so dont lose faith in your efforts. Career and financial challenges eclipse other concerns. New approaches will bring rewards if you identify the right way across the rapids. Others are drawn to you more than usual; enhance your charisma with a few beauty treatments and a fresh haircut if you like, but getting enough sleep and eating well do far more to achieve the desired results. Romance could be in the air as your warmth and mystery become more noticeable. Youve recently reached a pinnacle in your career, and youre ready to determine the next step. A little belt tightening is in order, but the situation will not last long. Mercury is retrograde in Pisces, reflecting your relationships and communications. You could feel overwhelmed this month by demands and interruptions; take preventative measures with herbal supplements and acupuncture. Events at home propel you toward your goals of greater independence and self-expression. This may involve your career, but it is as much about your identity and who you are to those you love. Youll have to mediate a home vs. career tug-of-war. Continue focused efforts toward a new future. This is part of a long, gradual climb to success. The last solar eclipse in your sign will empower you to make changes youve wanted for many years. The more you emphasize service to others, the more successful and satisfying your initiative will be. Youve gotten used to a higher level of activity, but you may feel a little overwhelmed at this time. Love connections become more challenging. Theres an issue that seems innocent enough, but needs closer attention and deeper study to resolve. This is likely to involve anger and emotional responses, so patience is key.

Its time to embrace a healthier approach to life. New methods could include a different type of fitness, diet or inner growth program. Be aware of the opportunities and insights that come your way from others. The area of greatest enterprise for you is in social relationships, but dont expect results right away. When they do come through, theyll be powerful. Youll want to retreat more than ever, and its a good time to recharge your batteries. Return to your center and renew your focus. An unexpected turn of events could throw you off course; stay focused and grounded. It feels like a make-or-break time, and youre ready to break for it. You could move either house or job, or both. Others give you significant and perhaps unpleasant feedback. Own up to your part in the situation. Getting organized is the key to being at peace with yourself. Youre having a good clear out, so invite friends over to make it fun. Good organization can help you find those important papers you lost. Better yet, work out a system for staying organized. Dont let hidden fears stop you from having a go at your loftiest dreams and goals. The solar eclipse spurs dramatic but harmonious change in work and career. Your love life receives extra attention, but events out of your control take charge of your life now. If you need help, dont be afraid to ask. If its hard for you, its a good lesson. Chances are good that youll have some time off from work this month, but not because you necessarily want to. Its a necessary hiatus make the most of it by turning it into a vacation. Youre working on creating happiness and fulfillment and thats the most important factor in being healthy. If you feel tired, use the energy you have to refocus your sense of direction. The pressure has eased in career or business just in time for activities to intensify at home, where more attention is needed. If times get tough, it helps to realize that its only temporary because youre handling things the right way. Present yourself in a new way to reflect your new identity. Move ahead with clarity and branch out socially for future success.

Your need for independence is changing your relationship. Although it may seem like your partner wants more freedom, it is actually you. Reflect on your growth process with someone who cares about you, but develop your individuality and dont forget to help yourself. Seek a massage, acupuncture and other treatments provided by health practitioners. Youve got more energy than normal, but remember to breathe and take breaks. Dont answer the phone or check email for a portion of the day. Work is emphasized, and financial demands may hinder your social and romantic life. Cut yourself some slack and do inexpensive things that you enjoy, because pressure at work will only increase. Give yourself the time you need to figure out whats going on instead of responding in a knee-jerk way. Those you are closest to empower you with key insights, so pay attention. Expenses leave you a little shorter than usual, but extra cash and time you pour into creative works will bear fruit in the future to pump up your bank account. Creative projects reach an impasse, however, your vision is maintained at a deeper level. Test and weed out the opportunities that show little promise. Its time to trim your sails, and this includes relationships. Those closest to you need more space now, and you need some yourself to focus on personal projects. Career and business can now reach the peak youve been working toward for years. A period of intense activity is coming up, so now is the time to make preparations. But remember, you need to have a bit of fun too.

n my last column I wrote about the similarities between the Kabalah and Tantra. Part of the column discussed the idea that classical or traditional Tantra involves far more than the sexual aspects of Tantra more accurately called Neo-Tantra that are most frequently equated with Tantra in the West. The term Neo-Tantra was coined by one of the most important instructors of the techniques, a man named Rajneesh (now known as Osho). In fact, many of todays best-known teachers of [Neo-] Tantra were either his students, trained by his students or influenced by his writings or the writings of his students. Perhaps most interestingly, Rajneesh was very eclectic and added concepts from other traditions to what he was teaching. This, combined with the somewhat tenuous links between Aleister Crowleys Western style of sex magick and Tantric sexuality, has resulted in many equating any sort of spiritualized sexuality with Tantra. As a result, Tantra has become a catchword to cover just about anything having to do with sexuality. Like Traditional Tantra, Taoism is far more than just the few aspects of it that most Westerners know about. Although Tantric concepts entered China, the home of Taoism, thousands of years ago, Taoism or its roots were already part of Chinese culture. Thus, even though some people equate certain Taoist mystical concepts with Tantric ideas, they do not have the same sources. Certain forms of Taoism and Tantra are parallel, although they are not the same. Taoist spiritual sexual practices are not the same as those found in Tantra, but because they are parallel, it is easy to find similarities. Taoism goes back to sources that are at least 10,000 years old, about the same
40
as the sources of Tantra. Its archetypal book, the Tao Te Ching (pronounced dow day jing), is attributed to the sage Lao Tzu, who supposedly lived around 600 B.C.E. Another important text of Taoism is the I Ching, attributed to the sage Fu Hsi. The version we have today is not the original, however. The original was reinterpreted and reordered by King Wen and his son Tan between 1143 and 1109 B.C.E. It is this version that is so popular today. Kung Fu Tzu (Westernized as Confucius) is attributed as the author of a book analyzing the I Ching. Part of Taoism is the set of practices known as Chi Gung (or Chi Kung). One of the best-known exercises of Chi Gung is the Microcosmic Orbit. This has many similarities to the Kabalistic exercise known as the Circulation of the Body of Light (fully explained in Modern Magick). There are also similarities between those two exercises and certain Tantric techniques practiced in Kundalini Yoga. While none of them are the same, they do have noticeable similarities. Taoist yoga is actually most closely associated with alchemy. Although most people think of Western alchemy as only the transmutation of lead into gold, another important aspect of Western alchemy was the creation of the elixir of life, a substance that would give youth, health and extended life. Taoist alchemys main purpose was to increase health, vitality and longevity, along with the acquisition of certain magical powers. To achieve this, Taoist alchemists used a variety of methods including visualization, breathwork and specific sexual techniques. In todays eclectic spiritual world, where instantaneous communication is ubiquitous, there is no need to be a spiritual purist. If you can apply techniques to your personal spiritual path, by all
means go ahead! The Taoist yoga tradition is rich with methods you can apply to your individual practices with powerful results. Unfortunately, most of the books on the subject are about Taoist yoga rather than presenting a training system for someone to follow. Llewellyn has published two easily understandable books that make learning Taoist yoga practical. Both were written by Eric Yudelove, who has been studying Taoism for over 35 years. He studied with Taoist Master Mantak Chia and serves as a Senior Instructor for him. In Taoist Yoga and Sexual Energy, Yudelove presents a system that can change your life in 14 weeks. It covers healing secrets, Chi Gung, Taoist alchemy and sexual Kung Fu. Mantak Chia writes, These longtime secret Taoist techniques are being presented openly to the West, where they cannot be suppressed by any oppressive government controls. Real Taoist practices are herein preserved by Master Eric, not censored and distorted versions resulting from the suppression of the Taoist teachings during the past thirty years. The book features many breathing techniques previously kept secret, including hair breathing, reverse breathing and bone marrow breathing. It reveals advanced practices of Chi Gung, including standing, sitting, lying and moving forms. Taoist Yoga and Sexual Energy reveals six special healing sounds. Each is associated with a body organ (or, more accurately, the functioning of that organ), and five of them are associated with a Taoist color and element earth, fire, water, wood and metal. These healing sounds are simple. They are: S-s-s-s-ss-s-s-s, Ch-u-w-a-a-y, Sh-h-h-h-h-h, Ha-w-w-w-w, Wh-o-o-o-o and H-e-e-e-e. The proper way to use them for healing yourself is clearly explained.
Another full system is presented in Yudeloves 100 Days to Better Health, Good Sex & Long Life. In this book he includes exercises that take just fifteen minutes per day such as genital breathing, Iron Shirt breathing, the famous Microcosmic Orbit, self-massage and the opening of the Golden Flower. Both of these books will help you improve your health, extend your life and even improve your sex life. The sooner you start on these programs the sooner youll see changes.

When they are quite warm, move your curved palms to cover or cup the eyes. Allow the warmth to flow into your eyes. love watching smoke rise from burning incense. I am mesmerized by the flickering candle flame on the altar. I love drinking ritual wine from my chalice and smelling the scent of a magickal oil. But its hard to involve all those things in my day-to-day life, as Im at work, driving in a car, on a subway or talking with my mother. My teachers taught me that magick is a part of your everyday life, and not only for the nights of the full moon, with closed doors or deep in the woods. You have to find ways of working magick into everything you do, from the high ceremonial acts with fancy tools to the mundane issues of life that come up when you least expect them and are least prepared for them. Everything is an opportunity to exercise your magickal spirituality. So while I was taught traditional spellcrafting using incense, oils, herbs and candles, I was also taught how to direct my will, move energy and create change with no tools at all. I call this instant magick, because you can do it anytime, with little preparation, and because many of the results seem instantaneous, as its applied to immediate situations at hand. Its not a substitution to traditional magick, but a modern interpretation of simple folk magick that compliments any traditional training. Many magickal practitioners already do this, but few books and courses talk about how. Books often talk about how the only magickal tool or ingredient you really need is yourself, but dont explain fully how to apply your will without ritual and tools. Most assume that once you understand how to work magick in the traditional sense, you will eventually learn how to apply your skills in nonconventional ways. Instant Magick: Ancient Wisdom, Modern Spellcraft is one of the only books to look at spell casting from this no-tools approach.

My first exploration into instant magick started when I was still skeptical about magick, wondering what was coincidence and what was really magick. I had high expectations, and what little results I was getting from my magick left me somewhat unimpressed. One result that did impress me and really opened me to the reality of magick was an instant magick parking spell. At the time, I was attending a university that was notorious for having inadequate parking for its commuting student body. You would either have to arrive ridiculously early for your class to find parking, or park many miles away and take a shuttle bus to the campus. I learned that you could magickally zap for a parking space as you were driving to a destination by taking a few moments to visualize a parking space wherever you desired it, even near the door of the building, and imagine yourself pulling into it, as if the space was waiting just for you. I would often say a prayer to the Goddess and God as I did so, silently saying something like, I ask in the name of the Goddess and God to grant me a parking space that is correct and for my highest good. So mote it be. When I arrived at my destination, the parking space would be where I envisioned it, or fairly close by. The first time I did this spell, it worked, but I though it was luck or coincidence. The second time was a little more impressive. The third time made me think something was going on. After a semester of consistent parking space success, I was a believer in instant magick. Since then I learned acts of instant magick for fixing machines, keeping warm in cold weather, healing, spirit communication, animal communication and protection. When instant magick is taught, one of the problems for some students is the dependence upon visualization. If you
are not using tools or physical ingredients, the magick is often described in terms of visualizations. In your minds eye, you imagine what you want. Sometimes its that simple. But what if you cant visualize well? Can you still do instant magick? Definitely. By working with my own students over the years, Ive learned that not everybody visualizes well, and they dont necessarily need to learn to visualize. There are many ways of applying your will to manifest magickal change. You intention is the most important factor. In this book, I outline a system of many energetic correspondences that can be used in place of, or in conjunction with, traditional visualization. Most spell books use physical correspondences, tools to work with to help the practitioner harness a particular energy. If you want to work with the intentions of success and health, which are ruled by the Sun astrologically, you would do magick involving yellow and gold, including candles, stones and even herbs with a strong solar connection, like sunflowers. Instant magick correspondences use non-physical correspondences. You can build a relationship with energies through other psychic senses to attune with these spiritual forces and manifest your will. To do the same solar magick, you might attune to the feelings of your solar plexus chakra, and direct your solar will from it without visualization. You might petition a solar deity, archangel or spirit to help you in your goal, using the skills of psychic speaking, rather than visualization, to communicate with the entity. You can use affirmations or magickal words to make your intention clear and carry your will. You can attune to the energies of the elements, planets and your own body to make magick. Quite literally in magick, where there is a will, there is a way.

Wouldnt it be great if you could practice magick anytime, anywhere, without the use of ceremonial spells, altars or magickal tools? Candles, special ingredients and exotic symbols are important in performing many types of magick, but these items arent always practical, attainable or even available. After all, as author Christopher Penczak writes, You cant always get to your altar, and many times you need magick in your car, at work or on the run. He provides a solution to this in his new book, Instant Magick. Penczaks innovative, modern spellcasting techniques utilize meditation, visualization and intent in any situation, at any time. This is a different kind of spellbook one that focuses on weaving natural energies into every facet of life, transforming your will, words and visions to reach your souls desire. The results can seem instantaneous, and the potential limitless. In this book, Christopher presents ancient wisdom in its simplest, most direct form. It is the purest form of magick tapping into your own energetic awareness to create change through willpower. To achieve this you need the ability to do three things: > Alter your consciousness > Develop a clear intention > Utilize your energy
Explicit and simple instructions, written in Penczaks personable style, will guide you through the nineteen exercises in the book that will lead to mastery of these three skills. Once you have them down there is nothing to stop you. Youll learn to craft spells, practice advanced instant magick, perform instant healings and live a magickal life. Practicing magick doesnt have to be difficult, complex, expensive or time consuming. It can be direct and quick, something anyone can accomplish. Youll be amazed at what you can do once you have learned the methods and spells of Instant Magick.

they assure the continuance of life. The interaction between earth and the heavens is heightened. Rock-hard soil becomes malleable enough to make mud, useful as a health and beauty remedy as well as supplying material for constructing homes. In the United States, many people have become distanced from the seasons. Frequently, weather is looked upon as a temporary nuisance, reported by a weather person rather than directly observed by the seers of the immediate community. Whereas the wet season in Africa and many other locales is a time for celebration, here rain is something that threatens our outdoor events, or more trivial still, moist weather causes frizzy hair. Its only when droughts occur and farms, flowers or endless lawns are dried to a frizzled brown that we tend to take heed of the necessity of rain. Then there are people intensely interested in the seasons and their relationship to the economy. It is a sad reality that most of the agrarian celebrations that have survived to the present day have only been kept alive because they afford an opportunity to make money from the mass marketing of food, gifts and costly indulgence. With spring in the air, here are some holistic ideas for engaging the natural gifts of the season:
Working With Rain Instead of hiding out from rain, sulking or complaining, shift your focus and treasure the rain. Here are some ways to enjoy rain:
Rainwater is easy to collect. Place multiple containers outdoors away from busy streets or eaves. Collected rainwater has magical and mundane uses. Mundane uses include conservation of potable water you can use rainwater to irrigate the garden, flush the toilet and other creative uses.
Tears From the Heavens Much of Four Seasons of Mojo centers on Africa, the Caribbean and the Americas. There are practices in these locales that we can all utilize to live more joyfully. In Africa for example, duality is highly touted. The year is divided into two opposing weather conditions: the wet and the dry. The dry is a time when life is challenged resources literally dry up. Water, the most cherished elixir of life, is hard for animals, humans or plants to find. Conversely, the wet is joyous; still, it has its own challenges. The joy comes from the first rains of the season since

efore there were written languages, people shared mystical and magickal concepts in the form of art. Shamans drew magickal art on the walls of the Lascaux cave in France more than 20,000 years ago. Over time, and as language developed, the very images seemed to have magick power, such as the yantras (magickal geometric drawings of the ancient Tantrics of India) and the amulets of the Middle East. Through the passage of time, secret societies shared their information through art. In this form, mystic beliefs could be shared with illiterate people, yet the subtle imagery also kept them all safe from authorities who might persecute them. By the time of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, secret societies such as the Freemasons and Rosicrucians, as well as the alchemists, all resorted to symbolic and metaphoric art. This extended to other artistic fields such as music, where Mozart hid secrets of Freemasonry in his opera, The Magic Flute. From Africa and the Caribbean developed Voudoun, which uses powerful symbols known as V-Vs that have been included in many works of art. World War I and the flu epidemic that followed decimated the Western worlds population and the interest in occultism waned. Where mystics had used art to share their secrets

before, now artists the surrealists combined occultism with concepts of Freud to keep the occult alive. One of the most famous surrealists, Salvador Dali, considered himself a magician and called his style the Paranoiac-Critical Method. This is the ability for the mind to see links between things that are not rationally linked one of the basic uses of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life! Even today, occultists such as Nema still use art to represent mystical ideas.

oward the end of the 19th century, founders and members of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn did something unequaled in the history of magick: they codified, linked and unified virtually every magickal system around. They took concepts from ancient Egypt, Sumeria, the Kabalah, astrology, alchemy, Tarot, Enochian magick, Gnosticism, Druidry, the Tarot, Tantric magick and much more, creating a complex but usable system. Although variations developed through the 20th century some of which expanded on certain aspects of the Golden Dawn system this became the main magickal paradigm of the last 125 years. Paradigms, however, are not forced on people. Instead, people discover them and adopt them. In 1978, a British magician named Peter Carroll published a book called Liber Null. It began a furor in England and Europe, but even after a follow-up, Psychonaut, was published in 1981, it was mostly ignored in the U.S. where systems that owed a great deal to the Golden Dawn (arguably including much of Aleister Crowleys Thelema and many Wiccan traditions) held sway. Finally, both books were published in one volume in the U.S. in 1987, and U.S. magicians began to take note. The basic paradigm of this system, known as Chaos Magick, is that belief is an important magickal tool and can be applied at will. Everything else is not important. It eliminates the need for complex rituals, robes, wands, etc., and can use anything even fictions such as H.P. Lovecrafts Cthulhu stories as powerful magickal concepts. Slowly, Chaos Magick is catching on all over the world. Will Chaos Magick become the magickal paradigm of the 21st century? Nobody can say. Perhaps something new will come about. The real question for magicians, however, is Will you be ready for the magick of the 21st century? The way to do that is by learning the basic concepts practiced for thousands of years. Many of the techniques will be applicable to whatever develops.

Sound Healing
Christopher Penczak
usic is the universal language, affecting everyone whether they realize it or not. Sound, tone, volume and harmony work together to affect our mood, outlook and ultimately our personal energy. Have you ever found your thoughts and feelings altered by the sounds in your environment? Both intentionally and unintentionally, the sounds around us affect our health. We can find ourselves near a busy construction area, with banding, noises and equipment sounds, and develop a headache, stress or simply become withdrawn and unaware of those sounds and the rest of our immediate environment. The sound of those arguing around us, or a chaotic traffic jam can create a similar effect. Alternatively we can spend time in nature, and not consciously be thinking of the wind through the leaves or the sound of birds, but find ourselves more relaxed and at peace. Many of our relaxation recordings mimic the sounds of nature. Man-made sounds, from primitive chants to more complex recordings, can be used in a similar way to affect your consciousness and, ultimately, your health. Different genres of music can have radically different effects on the listener. People are often drawn to the styles of music that empower them and make them feel good. Mystics around the globe and throughout time have known the power of music. Music is used in rituals, sacred dramas, worship services and personal healing sessions to affect change. Today, our modern mystics look to the principles of vibration to understand how sound works to bring healing. Esoteric lore tells us that everything has a vibration, a spiritual vibration or energy that defines its essential nature. Everything has a vibration, from our physical bodies to our every thought.
52
Stars, planets, trees, rocks and drops of water all have their own vibration. Though this seems like a crazy idea, because we cant literally see this vibration, modern science has proven the principle of vibration at least in part. Scientists now know that nothing physical is at rest. Our cells are constantly moving. Even matter that is not alive, or cellular, vibrates on a molecular and atomic level. Our molecules and atoms are constantly in motion. We cant see this movement, but it is there. To the mystic, everything is in motion with this vibration, not just physical matter. The universe is filled with many things we cannot see, and they too have a vibration. Our thoughts and feelings have a vibration, as well as our spirits. Each plays a critical role in our overall vibration. Many forms of holistic healing are called vibrational healing from forms of energy work, such as Reiki, to liquid remedies known as flower essences and gem elixirs. They alter our subtle vibrations, the vibrations of our spirit, mind and emotions, in order to affect our body. What is sound, but an audible vibration? Sound is a range of energy that is audible. We have a range of energies that science has catalogued, like the auditory spectrum and the electromagnetic spectrum. Modern mystics believe there is a range of energies aligned with more subtle forces the life energies of the body and the universe. They relate to subtle and subjective experiences, such as our emotions, thoughts and spirit. Along with our Principle of Vibration, there is another esoteric teaching known as the Principle of Correspondence. A well-known version sums it up as as above, so below, as within, so without. Patterns repeat themselves on many levels. To know one pattern, study it on a different level. Another way to look at it
is through the musical image of octaves. Energies repeat themselves in different scales. Sounds can also correspond to colors. Colors, as discovered in color healing and color psychology, can correspond to different moods and thoughts. If you want to change your outlook, you can change it more easily with the help of sound or color. The esoteric systems of healing relating stones, plants, flowers, colors, notes, mantras and even planets to parts of the body are all based upon the esoteric principle of octaves. If you have a piano and play a low C with the pedal up, then all the Cs vibrate. If you play the low octave of a healthy thought or feeling, represented by a sustained tone, or even another healing tool, such as a crystal, the higher notes in your emotions, mind and spirit will resonate and bring healing. In the end, all spiritual forms of healing are based on this power of vibration. Sonic vibration is one of the ways we are most familiar with vibration. Music, percussion, song and dance are all culturally accessible to us and call upon a strong use of our intuition, determining what makes us feel good, and what doesnt, without a lot of esoteric knowledge of foreign cultures. I had a teacher who suggested once that you just make noise random tones and sounds until you find one that makes you feel good, particularly if you are feeling ill, and you continue the good sound until you feel better. Ive done that many times when I thought I was getting sick, and apparently moved the vibration of illness right out of me. Sometimes understanding those cultures that valued the power of sound healing can help give us some guidelines and structure. One of the best books for understanding how to use sound in your own healing is Sacred Sounds by Ted Andrews. In it, Ted explores the
sacred science of sound, and its history in the ancient world. In it, he relates the musical tones of the C scale to the seven chakras of the body (see Healing with Sound and Stone from Sacred Sounds by Ted Andrews below).
He also relates a powerful component of music to esoteric healing: rhythm. Though many focus entirely on pitch and tone in their sacred healing, tribal practitioners of healing to this day also focus on the magickal powers of certain rhythms. The number of beats within a pattern can influence the effect it has on the body and awareness. Shamans who use drumming to enter an altered state have known this for centuries (see Table of Rhythmic Correspondences from Sacred Sounds by Ted Andrews on right). Compose Yourself by Andy Barnett carries a musicians sensibility and applies it to all aspects of life. Barnett encourages lovers of all kinds of music to apply their music to their health and wellbeing, from classical to punk rock. The book is filled with a variety of exercises designed to help the introspection and wellness process, using the principles of music. I found exercise 24: Vocal Calisthenics very helpful.
Warm up: start with a soft, very low tone on ahh. Very slowly raise your pitch as if imitating the sound of an air raid siren starting up. About mid-range change the phoneme to eee. Keep going. Increase the volume and breath support. Go all the way up, as high as you can go. SCREECH! Now slowly come back down, all the way to the grunt. Repeat several times, taking less and less time to complete the sirens call. Thats your extended range, probably close to three octaves. Singers spend years training these three octaves to perform. For the following exercise use this sentence for the score: There is no possible chance you can convince me of anything. Pacing: Repeat the sentence at medium volume and with the tempo in a monotone. Change nothing else; repeat the sentence several times, increasing the pace each time, saying it faster and faster until the words start to be garbled. Now repeat the sentence at a slower pace, going slower and slower until the words begin to modulate and blur. (The slower you go you will notice that it is harder to maintain the monotone.) Volume: Using a normal inflection, start by repeating the words at a slightly louder than normal volume. Repeat louder yet, changing nothing else. See how loud you can get. When did the volume start to influence the meaning?
Now go the other way. Repeat the phrase, getting softer and softer until you are whispering. How did the meaning and personality of the words change? Pitch: Pitch (couple with volume) is probably the most revealing aspect of the human voice because pitch modulation is clearly a product of varying degrees of inner tension. Keeping an even, near monotone articulation, repeat the entire phrase starting at different places all over your range. At the same point do not modulate from word to word. Maintain a normal pace and volume as you change only the register in which you speak the entire phrase. Notice the tension in your throat, lungs and belly as you move from register to register. Enunciation: Clear consonants and resonant vowels articulate distinctive images. Slurring words, talking into our teeth and talking so fast the words race by all contribute to a blurry rendition, a fuzzy projection of our best intentions a bad first impression. Repeat the sample sentence using varying degrees of clear enunciation. At one extreme, slowly and carefully clip every consonant; move your mouth and tongue in an exaggerated way, sculpting every letter of every world. At the other end, see how little you can move your apparatus and still get the words out. Take it another stage further; mumble to the extent that the words dissolve into a garbled slush. Again concentrate on only the enunciacontinued on page 76

Then, quite suddenly, I realized that in my own way, I had been asking for them all along, in prayer, meditation and my private conversations with the Divine. Language depends upon a set of symbols in order to communicate, so it naturally follows that interaction with the Divine would require familiarity with unique modes of symbolism. Unfortunately, we may not recognize the signs when we see them. In Sacred Signs, Dr. Adrian Calabrese teaches us how to recognize the language of God by teaching us to be receptive to the messages. Youll learn how to recognize signs, interpret them and use them yourself to communicate with higher powers to invoke developmental life changes. Through practical instruction, progressive exercises and meditative advancements, Dr. Calabrese reveals three important keys to the knowledge of the Universe Ask, Accept and Trust. The book is divided into three respective sections that will help you understand the keys as you learn to interpret the signs. Becoming literate in sacred language will bring new understanding to the design of the Universe. Understand your place within it, and you can learn how to achieve your highest potential. Find instruction on: Warning Signs Dream Signs Asking for Your Sign How to Communicate with God Affirmations are carefully worded statements directed to God/Spirit and in some religious circles (mine for instance) are considered prayer. Anyone can use them to set forth a positive intention, and that is what we will use them for when asking for our Sacred Signs. The following is a preparatory affirmation to open your spiritual center to receiving messages from the Universe. The messages of the Universe are there to hear, to see and to believe. One has only to learn the means to communicate. Sacred Signs offers the tools necessary to understand the signs used to transmit inherent spiritual messages. Let Dr. Adrian Calabrese instruct you in the ways of interpreting this Divine language.

n a dark corner of a crowded night club, Trinity presses Neo against the wall and whispers, Its the question that drives us. The Matrix, the movie from which this scene was taken, has become a classic. It has a dream-like quality, demanding us to question: What is reality? The point Trinity makes is what educators and great thinkers have known and valued through the ages: While the answer may impart knowledge, it is the question that leads us to understanding. Over the years, I have found my nighttime dream experiences present more questions than they do answers. Perhaps their purpose has always been to lead me to understanding about my life and about what drives me.
Questions are what led me to write my book, Dream Exploration: A New Approach. And questions form the basis of the approach itself. Certain questions have always persisted in my work with dreams: Is there some easy, logical way to examine my dreams? How can I relate my dream life to my waking life? Can dreams give me guidance on what to do next when dealing with lifes issues? My research into these questions helped me realize that I needed to change my outlook about dreams. Like most of us, I had always viewed dreams as a mass of symbolic data to be analyzed. I came to realize that dreams are stories to be enjoyed and understood. I had always seen dreams as providing answers to
my questions. I found that dreams are showing me the questions I need to deal with in my waking life. Storytelling versus analysis; questions versus answers; understanding versus knowledge the key to this new outlook is the exploration of themes. The theme is the important message, idea or perception of any story, any waking event, any dream. Exploration of themes is easier and more logical than the tedious, ofttimes misleading examination of symbols. Themes throw you right into the middle of the questions of your life. Themes lead you to understanding. For example, the theme of a dream in which you find yourself naked in public might be, I am vulnerable and need protection. This dream is leading

you to examine areas in your waking life in which you are vulnerable. Once I had become comfortable with this new approach of theme work, I began to ask myself, Is there a set of common core themes general themes that can address any event or experience? From this, can we create a model of universally accepted messages, ideas or perceptions that will help us to evaluate and explore the themes of both our dream lives and waking lives? I found the answer in the following sources: the twelve houses in astrology, the twelve archetypes of every heros journey as presented by Carol S. Pearson in her book Awakening the Heroes Within, and the twelve universal dream themes identified by Patricia Garfield in her book The Universal Dream Key. Each of these sources describes twelve distinct groupings of human activity. And the activity descriptions of
each are amazingly similar. The correspondences of each source are such that they can be used collectively to describe each of the twelve basic life activities or themes. Astrologers divide the heavens into twelve sectors, called houses. Each house represents an aspect of life. For instance, the first house deals with who you are your self-image. The second house deals with what you have your personal possessions and resources. Pearson identifies the archetypes that influence each persons life journey. They can be seen to correspond to the houses in astrology. For instance, the first archetype deals with your persona, your self-image; the second with your personal needs. Garfield identifies twelve universal dream themes that are found the world over, across different cultures and classes. These themes present excellent examples of the twelve areas of
human activity as seen in the houses of astrology and Pearsons archetypes. For example, the common dream of being naked in public corresponds to the first house theme as it relates to your self-image. Dreams in which you have car trouble correspond to the second theme relating to satisfaction of personal needs. My book, Dream Exploration: A New Approach, builds on these sources and offers a universal set of common core themes that apply to your dream life and waking life. This model, called The Theme Matrix, provides the questions that plague all of us. It can be used as a guide for dealing with the issues raised in your dreams. odern science and technology have given us longer, healthier lives, connected continents instantly via the Internet, and made us more aware that we all share the same planet. But along with technological progress has come an increase in stress-related physical and mental health problems, the development of nuclear and biological weapons, and the onset of global warming. As humanity grows ever more complex, we must learn to balance our technological advances with the evolution of higher consciousness. One way to do that is through group or collective meditation. This system of meditation creates a single identity capable of transforming individuals, groups and the world as a whole. Author and group meditation facilitator Gayle Clayton provides advice and instructions for several varieties of both solitary and group meditation. Examine the nature of consciousness as you explore ways to increase moments of mystical awareness. Learn how to establish your own working meditation group, and explore exercises designed to foster both personal and planetary healing.

Qu equivocada estaba!

Messages from souls When a loved one dies we feel a deep grief, especially because we have to face the fact that we are not going to see that person ever again. We grieve for not being able to hug her anymore, sense her smell, see her smile or listen to her voice. We mourn because we think well never have any contact with our loved one again Thinking like that is a mistake. When my grandmother died of cancer I felt relieved for her because she was no longer suffering, but also I felt sad. I was with her until her last breath of life. I saw her living and I thought that was our last moment together and I would never enjoy her incomparable love and company. That was the end of everything for me. I was so wrong! Some days after her death, I started dreaming about her. Each of the dreams gave me an immense
happiness for being able to see her again, but at the same time, I felt confused because I knew she was dead. Therefore, she shouldnt be in front of me. In my first dream she told me she was much better up there. Then the days went by and I didnt have another dream about her, so I mentally reproached her for not visiting me. That same night she came to see me in my dreams once more. She told me, I came to see you so you dont complain or think that I have forgotten about you. It was then when I realized that she had been with me all that time and that she even knew what I was thinking. In my third dream, just like the last time, she came to our house and went to every corner of it. This time my dad, her son, was able to see her and hug her, which made me feel very happy and moved. With each of her visits my grandmother made me understand that we were still together and that I still can count on her company, love and protection. All these experiences led me to read more about that mysterious world that exists after death. I always believed in life after death, however, I had no idea about the world of souls. Destino de almas was the book that cleared up much of my doubts and gave me comfort. Based on hypnosis, Michael Newton, Ph.D. investigates the past lives of his patients, uncovering surprising information that demonstrates how our loved ones that have passed away can visit us in varied ways. Destino de almas eased the fear of death that I used to feel. I strongly believe that dying is being born again and that somewhere there are souls watching over us.

trange and beautiful monuments and ruins rise in deserts and jungles, on plains and mountaintops the great pyramids of the Egyptians and the Mayans, the enigmatic stone giants of Easter Island, the towering megaliths of Stonehenge. These and thousands more serve as reminders of civilizations that rose and fell thousands of years before the adventurous spirits of our modern society designed our own comparatively flimsy monuments of concrete and steel. While many of us occasionally long for a time when life was simpler, slower and perhaps easier (or so we think), most of us appreciate the myriad ways that technology makes us comfortable. Indoor plumbing, air conditioning, supermarkets brimming with fresh produce all year long our modern creature comforts are so pervasive that its easy to overlook their ubiquity. But in the long run, is it good for us? The same car that allows us the freedom to go anywhere at any time also spews toxic fumes into the air. The plastic containers that hold everything from our food to our garbage are made from materials that will be around for generations. Toxic chemicals spilled in our oceans and our rivers are affecting the entire food chain, including humans. And if you believe the majority of scientists, global warming is a real phenomenon, with impending dire consequences. Add it all up, and we face an uncomfortable dilemma: is our so-called progress coming at the cost of our health, and the health of our planet? According to mystics, psychics and others who claim to remember the lost civilization of Atlantis, this is not the first time that humanity has found itself in the midst of such a conundrum. The Greek philosopher Plato wrote a detailed account
of the lost continent of Atlantis over 2,000 years ago, and people have been looking for it ever since. According to Plato, Atlantis was an island located in the Atlantic Ocean due west of the Pillars of Heracles (now known as the Straights of Gibraltar). Some people, pointing to the many strange similarities between ancient cultures on both sides of the Atlantic, claim that survivors from the sinking Atlantis escaped in boats and eventually spread their knowledge and culture to places as far away as Egypt and South America. Strange as this all may seem, there is mounting scientific evidence that continents such as Atlantis and Lemuria could have existed and then vanished, sinking under the vast ocean waves. If Atlantis was located in the middle of the Atlantic, between Europe and the United States, it would have fallen along what is now known as the Atlantic Ridge. Samples taken from this unstable region of the ocean floor show proof of nearly constant underwater volcanic activity and, surprisingly, they have also revealed residue of freshwater plants dated to about 10,000 years ago. This scientific evidence indicates that long ago, the land now at the bottom of the ocean was actually above the surface. And its not unheard of for volcanic islands to suddenly appear or disappear. In 1883, the cataclysmic eruption of Krakatau, an uninhabited volcanic island near the island of Sumatra, literally split the earth apart. More than two-thirds of the island fell into the ocean as hot flows of volcanic ash and towering tsunamis killed more than 30,000 people. The explosive sound of the eruption could be heard for hundreds of miles, and scientists recorded small oscillations in sea levels as far away as the English Channel. The amount of
volcanic ash in the air caused vivid sunsets around the world, and global temperatures remained lower than normal for five years after the eruption. Less than 30 years after the devastating eruption, land began to emerge from the sea where Krakatau had once been. Anak Krakatau, or Child of Krakatau, has been steadily erupting and growing ever since a new volcano literally rising from the ashes of the old. This region remains unstable to this day, as we were all reminded on December 26, 2004, when another massive earthquake triggered the tsunami that killed more than 500,000 people. Closer to home, the hurricanes of 2005 devastated much of the Gulf Cost of the United States, including the entire city of New Orleans, one of our most vibrant cultural centers. In this case, people began to question what we are doing to our environment. As the population of the Earth continues to explode, more and more people are living near the coasts. And at the same time, we are destroying much of the land and polluting much of the atmosphere that is responsible for protecting us from these very disasters. Are we paying attention to whats going on, and is it too late to prevent it from getting worse? Shirley Andrews believes that we can learn valuable lessons from the destruction of Atlantis and Lemuria. She has spent decades researching the enigmas of these two lost continents and believes that, in both cases, their eventual destruction was brought about by a tragic clash between humanitys greed and manipulation of natural resources and inevitable earth changes. Her books, Atlantis: Insights From a Lost Civilization and Lemuria and Atlantis: Studying the Past to Survive the Future, outline the historical, scientific and metaphysical

case for the existence and eventual destruction of these great civilizations. She hopes that this knowledge can help us change course before our modern civilization repeats the same mistakes. In this excerpt from Lemuria and Atlantis, Andrews explains how we might learn from the mistakes of those vanished cultures: What was Mu? Where was Lemuria? When was it there? What were the people like? Was Atlantis in the Caribbean? Were there other civilizations at the time of Lemuria and Atlantis? What really happened to Lemuria and Atlantis? Is there any way to prevent our civilization from going the way of advanced civilizations in the past? Is anyone finding evidence of Lemuria and Atlantis now? Lemuria and Atlantis are deeply imprinted in the consciousness of many who are here today, and the ancient cultures are quietly influencing our lives. Numerous people contacted me who are sure that in the past in Lemuria and Atlantis they acquired the skills that enable them to lead satisfying lives today, and told me they wish to share this knowledge. No one really understands the origin of these images and concepts that surge to light from the deep unconscious, or perhaps descend from a higher awareness, but they should not be completely ignored. Readers who consider them implausible should overlook them, but I
hope the ideas they offer will enable others to reach into themselves and recall their own past experiences, which may further their knowledge of themselves. Theres an old saying that what goes around, comes around. Humanity advances in cycles, not on a straight linear path. In material and technological development we have arrived at a place in the cycle that is very similar to the final days of Lemuria and Atlantis. Our world is facing challenges comparable to the problems that confronted those renowned civilizations in the past, and we are on the brink of either annihilating ourselves or entering a new way of living and thinking. Studying the past will help us to survive in the future. Edgar Cayce, perhaps the twentieth centurys most famous psychic, gave us many clues to the riddle of Atlantis, as well as tales of Lemuria, another continent that supposedly sank beneath the waves of the Pacific. Known as the sleeping prophet, Cayce was famous for his trance readings covering everything from curing debilitating health problems that stumped conventional doctors to providing detailed accounts of past lives. Over the course of thousands of life readings, as Cayce called them, it emerged that many of his clients had once lived on Atlantis and Lemuria. There are those alive today who claim to remember their past lives on these lost continents. Shirley Andrews herself reports that her lifelong fascination with Atlantis began as a child, related to strange dreams and distant memories. Through her research, she has connected with hundreds of people who retain memories of Atlantean lives, with clues to its eventual downfall. Cayce, as well as many of those who remember these past lives, claim that much of the tension on Atlantis resulted from an ongoing conflict between the Sons of Belial and the Children of the Law of One. The Sons of Belial were consumed with desire for immediate physical gratification and the acquisition of material things, with little or no concern for others. They disregarded warnings of what would eventually
happen to Atlantis. The Children of the Law of One believed in a teaching very similar to the core precepts of many of todays world religions: we are all one. They practiced meditation and tried to be kind to one another, concerned for the wellbeing of every member of society. Edgar Cayce claimed that a key component of the destruction of Atlantis was the use of a powerful weapon. Atlanteans derived their power from the Great Crystal, he said, and from splitting the atom. At the time of his reading in 1933, no one quite understood what he meant by these descriptions, although he predicted that a weapon similar to the one that played a role in the destruction of Atlantis would be discovered in 25 years. In 1945, just three years after his death, the world saw just what kind of horrible power and devastation could be wrought by dropping an atomic bomb. And, 25 years later, scientists created the modern worlds first laser. The search for Lemuria and Atlantis has fascinated us for thousands of years. Tantalizing clues, archaeological anomalies, scientific discoveries and even psychic readings and prophetic dreams all may hold pieces of the puzzle. Even if we can never definitely prove the existence of these legendary civilizations, maybe we can still learn valuable lessons from the stories of their eventual destruction perhaps in time to avoid the same fate.

Sextraordinary
David Staume
ith so much sexual content hitting the bookstore shelves, sent in plain brown parcels and downloaded on the internet every day, what could possibly be written about sex thats new? Well, strangely enough, the answer is all the really important stuff. Despite the fact that we are all products of sex, we all experience its feelings and we all recognize its power to motivate, sex is a subject that we actually know very little about. It may be constantly talked about, thought about and practiced, but very little of this seems to happen with any real understanding. We experience sexual feelings, but we dont know where they come from. We give expression to these feelings, but with little thought for how best to do so. We have virtually no comprehension of the sexual big picture, and therefore no solid philosophical basis from which to view its phenomena or guide our sexual choices. The primary objective in writing The Beginners Guide to Sex in the Afterlife was to address this to present an expansive sexual philosophy, the sexual big picture, that we so desperately need. That meant exploring and answering fundamental questions, such as: What is sexual energy? Where does it come from? What is its purpose? What happens if we repress it? What happens if we let it run wild? What is wise use, what is unwise use and why? How can we control our sexual energy, how can we improve it and what is its highest and most magnificent use? Like The Beginners Guide for the Recently Deceased, The Beginners Guide to Sex in the Afterlife assumes that the reader is dead. An extraordinary subject needs an extraordinary perspective. To grasp the subject at its core we need to see beyond its portrayal in popular culture,
68
and this is where the afterlife perspective (where inner reality is turned inside-out) is ideal. By taking a broader, non-physical perspective, it is easier to bring the subject down to first principles, determine the source of our sexual energy, trace its course through our bodies and reveal some of its extraordinary power and capacity. The philosophy explored in The Beginners Guide to Sex in the Afterlife is proudly independent of religion, popular culture and social research, because none of those sources of information will get us to the essence of our subject. The only way to see the grand view, to understand the big picture of the origin, purpose and potential of sexual energy, is to go to the source, to the only infallible teacher and thats nature. The book describes an example of Green Language the language nature uses to inform and instruct and the extraordinary insights that an understanding of this language can bring. The book takes the form of a tour, taking the reader to various places around the world. It is in these places that we make our observations, read natures symbols and shed light on her mysteries. The reader will find him or herself on top of the Great Pyramid at Giza, above Lake Phewa Tal in Nepal, on a small island off the mainland of Tonga, in the Piazza del Nettuno in Bologna and amongst the hill tribes of Tanna one of the islands of Vanuatu. When youre dead and you can zoom from one side of the world to the other in minutes, why wouldnt you? But while the book presents an expansive philosophy on a very important subject, it doesnt take itself too
seriously. I quote from the Preface: The Beginners Guide to Sex in the Afterlife is written for the dead. If, however, you are yet to make the transition, we suggest you pour yourself a glass of wine, settle back into a comfortable chair and let the author take you on a guided tour of the sextraordinary. It is possible to explore serious subjects with humor, and to communicate more effectively because of it. Sex is an important subject; it can be the source of great joy, but also the source of great suffering. To understand it in its broadest context, to understand its origin, purpose and potential, has to be one of the most necessary things we can do. If you believe that sex is something only applicable to physical bodies, that its all about pleasure, that its simply a function of friction or a gathering of groins, then you have glimpsed but a tiny fraction of it. Sexual energy may well be the greatest power in the cosmos. It is a power that is capable of utterly transforming us, and is the only power capable of unfolding all our potential. And if you think thats overstating the case, prepare to be amazed.

t was a house filled with stories and secrets. I sensed it from the moment I first stepped inside, into air so still and heavy it felt a hundred years old. Outside, the day was overcast, with the brisk, damp breeziness of late winter. Inside, in the dim light, I could feel the charged melancholy, clinging to faded draperies and lingering in worn carpets. Even the dust seemed to be watching and waiting as my long-suffering realtor and I made our way through the many rooms and unexpected turns of the century-old house, converted from a single-family home to a triplex decades before. We opened one door only to find another behind it. And what looked like a closet turned out to be a maids staircase, which turned a corner and ended. But neither the occasional madhouse architecture nor the forlorn shabbiness that had descended upon the old house could hide its grandeur and beauty. Its high ceilings, hardwood floors, leaded-glass windows, open staircase and four porches were glorious beyond anything Id ever imagined I could afford, and with each unexplored room we encountered, I could feel my spirits rise. On my budget, any house I bought was bound to have some sort of shortcomings. By my standards, funky architecture and maybe even a resident ghost could hardly even be considered problems. We had been instructed to enter by the back door. Thats the part of the house where the old man had lived. It was where he still lived. Turns out he was watching us that day too, silent and heavy as the air, bound to the earth and his former home.

Join noted lecturer, Richard Webster, author of the bestselling Spirit Guides & Angel Guardians (Llewellyn), for a book discussion and signing celebrating his new four-book series on the archangels. What are angels? Do they appear in religious histories outside of Christianity? What has been their role in esoteric thought and philosophy, and how have they impacted alchemists, magicians, pagans and non-Christians? Richard Webster, New Zealands leading author on metaphysical subjects, discusses their history and mythology to decode their overall symbology and how this knowledge can benefit your spiritual path.

Carl Llewellyn Weschcke article continued from page 2 body, and upon the physical world. The more our mental choices and actions correspond to the nature of spirit, the more harmony and beauty we achieve. We become co-creators and need to accept greater responsibility for the world in which we live.
Mind + Spirit = Magick It has been taught that through magick we can bring about changes in consciousness, and changes in perceived reality. It is the nature of the magical universe that changes in perception. On a large enough scale, it can bring about changes in physical reality. This brings us to a new point of realization: garbage in, garbage out! We are all magicians of lesser or greater skill, and of lesser or greater responsibility for the world we share. People in ignorance of this fact, and people unaccepting of this responsibility, are in fact largely responsible for the state of the world as it is. We tend to blame everyone but ourselves for crime, poverty, disease, war, global warming, extreme weather, catastrophes and even the neighbor next door whom we dont love as ourselves. New Age = Responsibility Here we are, at the end of this editorial so I have to bring my argument to conclusion. I believe we are at a tipping point in human evolution where more people are opening to higher levels of consciousness, extended awareness and mental capabilities to the point that we will soon be able to bring about a New Order of the Ages (Novus Ordo Seclorum). See the Great Seal on the back of your dollar bill where it also says Annuit Coeptis, meaning Providence Has Favored Our Undertakings, but it also shows an incomplete pyramid. We have to finish the project through our own efforts. We have been blessed with life, but even more so with responsibility. We perceive the world where we have dumped our garbage, treated the earth with disre76
spect, trampled upon our neighbors and created hatred among our kind in the name of differently perceived Divinity. Let us accept responsibility, exercise our mental power and achieve spiritual insight to finish the project and bring about a New Order of the Age as favored by Providence. even capriciousness. In parts of Africa, lightning water is associated with deities, including the Yoruban orisha, Shango and Oya. Use lightning water to help your mind accept changes (dieting, moving, new job, new school, divorce or separation, even mourning). Add a small portion to your bath or put out a small dish of it on your altar. Record the sounds of rain during a thun derstorm. Play these sounds during rites or ceremonies involving new beginnings, to generate ideas, to relax or in meditation.
Jo Whittemore article continued from page 29 fumbling circus clown. Magic allows its wielders control of their surroundings, an absolute power over their own destinies. It transforms the impossible into something probable. The one criticism fantasy seems to encounter is its standing in the real world. Fantasy lovers are often seen as dreamers who spend so much time in other worlds that they accomplish nothing in this one. Tell that to Walt Disney, Gary Gygax, Terry Brooks, R.A. Salvatore, J.K. Rowling, Robert Jordan and the hundreds of others who have made their enchanted livings living among the enchanted. I, myself, turned out rather well with an upbringing steeped in fantasy. Instead of drowning my adolescent sorrows in alcohol or drugs like some of my peers, I drew courage from the written word. In college, I met a man who shared my fascination with all things fantastical, and we have been married for almost five years now. (I also have friends for all 365 days of the year.) At some point in my writing career, I may choose to delve into contemporary fiction, but there will always be a trace of magic dusted across the pages. After all, who wants to live in a world without fantasy? Stephanie Rose Bird article continued from page 45

With this exercise, you can really see the power not only of your words, but how you deliver them to others. By paying attention to the music of our voice, we have a better understanding of our personal power to communicate on a multitude of levels. In the end, all the sounds we make, and all the sounds we listen to can contribute to our overall health and wellbeing. The more conscious we can get about the sounds in our environment and the sounds and words we choose to utter, the more empowered and healthy we can be.
