The Ariel Atom started out as a university project, and the first prototype of what was then known as the LSC (for Lightweight Sports Car) was shown in 1996. It entered production four years later as the Atom, and this British-built exoskeleton sports car has been a track-toy favorite ever since, regardless of what engine powers it.
Today, Ariel's second product, the amazing off-road Nomad, often steals the spotlight from the original, but while the company works on its electric hypercar, the Atom isn't being forgotten. In fact, the supercharged Honda inline-four in the Atom 3.5R pairs 350 horsepower and 243 lb-ft with a weight figure of 1212 lbs. Do the math!
What's more, the 3.5R has a pneumatically activated sequential gearbox, designed to be flat-shifted at speed, allowing you to brake with your left foot all day long. But your lap times will also be improved by the Atom's beautiful balance. While earlier cars were snappy and quite hard to drive fast, these latest evolutions with Öhlins dampers tell a different story. And one you'd want to hear, loudly.
