Description

(primulinum ochraceum)

Tall stems bear narrow green leaves and a terminal cluster of flowers with yellow petals, which reflex totally to display the contrasting garnet-coloured throat.

This was once thought of as being close to nepalense because of its colouring, but it is now accepted as distinct and different (in fact it looks nothing like nepalense, when seen in the living state and it is a very different plant)!

A very striking and attractive lily for later flowering (July at the earliest here). Light or half shade in a leafy or humus-rich soil seems best. The name of the colour form “ochraceum” seems to refer simply to yellowish forms which grow in Yunnan, China, however the ground colour is variable from pale primrose, to almost white in one direction and to a deeper butter-yellow in the other. We have tried to show the variation in our gallery.
