Description

A robust, easy-going plant with elongated, conical flowers marked with a broad green ‘V’ on the inners. Very like Atkinsii this has, for 150 years, been grown as or mixed with it and can barely be distinguished. The snowdrop bible untangled the story, naming the interloper ‘James Backhouse‘. Originally from the nursery of James Backhouse, of York where the error occurred, soon after Atkinsii began to be distributed. E. A Bowles was aware of the mistake many years ago.

James Backhouse is supposedly characterised by the rare production of a flower with an extra petal. This is not frequent. In March 2013 when I wanted to take a photograph, I found just 1 aberrant flower in a bed with over 150 normal blooms. The extra petal may be an outer, but it may also be an inner or two narrow, claw-like outers may replace a normal single one. The mis-shapes do not detract in any way from what is an excellent garden plant.
